An empty Avenue in Glasgow's West End

This wooden wall — formed one side of what looked like an empty building down in Cape May's back bay area. I was drawn to the cool wood grains, textures and simple contrasts and symmetry.

Ironically, when I took this shot, three kids were sitting on a park bench playing on their phones while the swings were empty...so sad.

Week 16 (v 6.0) - by the bag

A shot of the other empty tenants in the shopping center. These smaller shop housed a Fashion Bug and a Blockbuster in better times. Now there just empty like the former Bradlees store seen in the background.

The vacant Bradlees Store on Route 206 in Bordentown, New Jersey. The store closed in March of 2001 with the rest of the chain due to bankruptcy.

Aurizon (formerly QR National) is currently embroiled in an environmental dispute surrounding coal dust contamination as heavy coal trains travel through suburban south Brisbane on their way to the Fisherman's Island export terminal in Brisbane Docks.

There are no such problems here, since these are returning empties, heading back west to the the Darling Downs mines ready to be filled with another 2,000 tonnes of black diamonds. With the skyscrapers of Brisbane's CBD (Central Business District) just visible above the overbridge in the background, '2300' Class locos Nos. 2348D & 2310D have little problem dragging their rattling bogie hoppers through Yeerongpilly station.

A six-car Beenleigh to Ferny Grove 'Citytrain' formed of 220-series SMUs (suburban multiple units) with set No. 243 trailing, heads into the city, just managing to avoid spoiling the shot!

The swimming pool in the basement of Central Campus in Des Moines is empty of water and full of cement, and now sits abandoned.

Empty spaces Fremantle

Empty shops and business premises are a common sight on UK High Streets, but many vacancies are relatively short lived - the shops are soon in use again although in these difficult times, the new business only have a limited life.

This collection portrays retail outlets that have been empty long-term, some for many years. In the past, all these have housed thriving businesses. Yet now, for some reason, they are empty and some are falling into a state of disrepair and dilapidation.

Each has its own story to tell. Some are completely empty, others seem to have stopped trading suddenly and appear like the Marie-Celeste, still with stock in the windows. In many cases, we can tell easily from the faded signage what business last operated from the shop. Others are a complete mystery with faded blinds or shutters and all signs removed.
