Introduced, cool-season , annual, tufted grass to 10 cm tall. Leaf sheaths are hairless and blades are flat or rolled, to 2 mm wide and hairless; margins and upper surface are rough to touch. Ligules are membranous and 0.3–1 mm long. Flowerheads are cylindrical, often curved, slender spikes that are partially enclosed in the upper sheaths. Spikelets are 1-flowered, unstalked, alternately arranged on the stem and embedded in the stem. Glumes are 4–7 mm long, longer than internode and lemma, arranged side by side (except the terminal spikelet), slightly overlapping, and covering the hollow in stem. Lemma is 3–5 mm long and has its back against the stem. Grows in saline areas, often far inland, so Coast Barb Grass is a misleading name. This specimen was photographed in Ballimore.

Researchers found more than 6,500 fossils embedded in shale from Germany's Messel Pit, including an ancient ungulate, or hoofed mammal, called Kopidodon macrognathus, whose skull is seen above. Researchers think this animal was a young male, based on its bony head crest and still-developing teeth in its upper jaw.
