The Ngorongoro crater is one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world. It was formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed two or three million years ago. The caldera is a huge bowl with walls of more than 600 meters high, covered with forests, plus a flat ground and land of about 260 km2. This particular natural world is organized in several ecosystems - forests, savannas, lakes and marshes, salt ponds, arid lands ... -, embedded in an area that does not exceed 20 kilometers in diameter.
The crater houses about 25,000 animals of very different species. It is considered one of the smaller areas where it is possible to see the big five, the five most representative animals of Africa: the lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo and the rhinoceros (if the hippopotamus is included, then it should be enlarged the denomination to the big six). In addition, in the circle it is possible to observe, with a bit of luck, the exotic black rhinoceros, possibly the biggest attraction of the park.

It was still morning, half an hour after sunrise. My gaze was directed southwest. In the background, the Roggenflueh rises just above the fog, resembling a submarine emerging from the depths. To the middle right, you can see Oberberg. A fantastic view that stays within my soul.

A huge slab of ice with a few leaves embedded in it slid off my roof. It landed vertically in a snowbank so that sunlight backlit the leaves beautifully.
LA&L 433 and WNYP 426 have a big train of 39 cars as they head North in the woods just North of Stull Road in Rush, NY on November 11, 2024. Normally I would stand on the weedy embankment on the other side of the tracks, but I thought I would try the "woods" side this day. I found two ticks crawling on me on the way home and had two more embedded in me the next morning. I'll never go there again!

NGC 6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC 6823 in Vulpecula. The reflection nebula and cluster are embedded in a large faint emission nebula called SH2-86. The whole area of nebulosity is often referred to as NGC 6820. Open star cluster NGC 6823 is about 50 light-years across and lies about 6,000 light-years away. The center of the cluster formed about two million years ago and is dominated in brightness by a host of bright young blue stars.

First one of the Year, found this lonely Birch next to a small wooded path. The small beech on the left refusing to drop it's leaves. Happy New Year all.

EXCELSIOR - Mutton Cove
The screw steamer Excelsior was built in 1897 by Gourlay Brothers of Dundee, Scotland. The steel hulled vessel measured 131.0 feet (39.9 m) in length, 24.0 feet (7.3 m) breadth, 10.8 feet (3.3 m) depth and was 310 gross tons.
The Excelsior was originally registered in Sydney (1897) and employed on the north coast of New South Wales before its purchase by the Tahiti firm, L Ballands, with its register transferred to Papeete.
In 1904 the vessel was again registered in Sydney, and in 1908 was owned by South Australian flour millers, John Darling and Sons. By 1912 the Excelsior was owned by the South Australian Farmers Union Cooperative (registered in Adelaide) and remained under their ownership until 1933 when it was sold to the South Australian
Harbors Board. The steamer was converted to a coal hulk, lightering coal to the steam powered dredges working in Port Adelaide.
As diesel-powered dredges took over from the coal-fuelled ones, the Excelsior was laid up, eventually being abandoned at Mutton Cove, on the northern end of the Lefevre Peninsula, in 1945. Today the remains lie embedded in mud, east of Outer Harbor. The rusting hull shows little sign of salvage. The bow is intact but sections of the stern have collapsed
