Leake Street Tunnel is one of London’s coolest street art spots. Tucked away underneath Waterloo station, it’s an ever-changing canvas of colourful murals.

Leake Street graffiti tunnel is one of London’s not-so-hidden gems. This 300 metre tunnel is the city’s largest legal wall and has been a bastion of London’s street art scene since 2008.

Leake Street Tunnel wasn’t always a legal wall. Before 2008 it was just a dank and grimy tunnel squirreled beneath Kings Cross Station.

That all changed when British street art superstar Banksy (yes, the Banksy) decided to hold a street art festival called Cans Festival down in the tunnel.

Banksy invited the biggest and brightest names on the international street art scene to come down and put up a piece of work in the tunnel. And that was it – Leake Street was no longer dank and grimy, but instead a bold, colourful and cool place where artists could showcase their work.

Since then, Leake Street graffiti tunnel has been flying the flag for the London street art scene. The fact that this is a legal wall means that artists can work in peace and that no two visits are ever the same.

Leake Street Tunnel is a short walk away from Waterloo Station. It takes about five minutes to walk it from the station via York Road.

This bank of rock is just about 40 yards down the beach from the swirly sandstone outcrop of the previous shots. If you didn't know better, you would think that it was a man-made wall. The embedded boulders look to be set in cement.

Don't worry, my personal artist101 "texture" will only be used this once lol

Just an experiment inspired by another flickr member's unacceptable behavior!

We went out to the sailboat this evening and things have gone from bad to worse for the owner. Sand is taking over the craft and the waves have busted through the windows on the port side, allowing sand and water in. At this point, I think it's going to take a backhoe and a water jet (Mama Lizards idea) to move enough sand to get it out. Very sad situation.

Stones embedded in the low tide sand at Jurby Beach on a calm Autumn evening. This shot was taken in the brief but magical blue hour, which never fails to deliver cool hues and tones which are impossible to achieve at any other time of day. I particularly like the subtle sunburst projected through the vibrant post sunset sky in this shot 🌅

Finally on December 21, 2013, the movement of the rocks on the Racetrack Playa was witnessed. The rocks were embedded in ice as wind moved the entire ice sheet:

Mystery of how rocks move across Death Valley lake bed solved

www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-rocks-move-death-val...

Sadly, this disproves my "internal power source" theory proposed on April Fools Day in 2010 (of course there could be multiple mechanisms by which they move...).

Hopefully this will stop theft of the rocks by people hoping that rocks might have magical powers.

------------------------------------------------------------------

For the first time someone has photographed the rocks moving on The Racetrack at Death Valley. Their secret... an internal power source! They glow as they move. Who knew?

Note the original upload date for my image and explanation was April 1, 2010 ("April Fools Day" here in the U.S.).

The USGS has mapped the rocks' movement for years, and the actual mechanism is believed to simply be high winds while the clay surface is wet and slick.

Using Differential GPS to Map the "Sliding" Rocks of Racetrack Playa

"So the evidence suggests that strong gusts of wind and swirling dust devils, in combination with a slick playa surface may set even the heaviest the rocks in motion. Off they go, scooting along downwind until friction slows them down and they come to rest. There the stones wait for the next time when slippery mud and wind spur them into action again."

Space Science image of the week:

Daphnis, one of Saturn’s small ring-embedded moons, is seen here kicking up waves as it orbits within a gap between rows of icy ring particles.

The image was taken by the international Cassini mission, which recently concluded its incredible 13-year odyssey in the Saturn system.

Images like the one featured here, which was first released in February 2017, provide scientists with a close-up view of the complicated interactions between a moon and the planet’s rings, as well as the interactions between the ring particles themselves.

Daphnis is just 8 km across, but its gravity is powerful enough to disrupt the tiny particles of the A-ring that mark the edge of a gap in the rings called the Keeler Gap. As the moon moves through the Keeler Gap, wave-like features are created in both the horizontal and vertical planes.

Three wave crests of diminishing size can be seen here in the wake of the moon’s passage. In each subsequent crest, the shape of the wave evolves as the ring particles within the crests collide with one another.

Zooming in towards the tiny moon reveals a faint, thin strand of ring material that almost appears to have been directly ripped out of the A-ring by Daphnis.

The images of this feature were taken in visible light, using Cassini’s narrow-angle camera at a distance of about 28 000 km from Daphnis. Image scale is 168 m/pixel.

The Cassini–Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA and ASI, the Italian space agency.

A broad expanse of glowing gas and dust presents a bird-like visage to astronomers from planet Earth, suggesting its popular moniker - The Seagull Nebula. This portrait of the cosmic bird covers a 2 degree wide swath across the plane of the Milky Way, near the direction of Sirius, alpha star of the constellation Canis Major. Of course, the region includes objects with other catalog designations: notably NGC 2327, a compact, dusty emission region with an embedded massive star that forms the bird's head (aka the Parrot Nebula, right center). IC 2177 forms the sweeping arc of the seagull's wings. Dominated by the reddish glow of atomic hydrogen, the complex of gas and dust clouds with bright young stars spans over 100 light-years at an estimated 3,800 light-year distance (text adapted from APOD). As seen in previous photographs, this industrial spur requires the use of a parking lot to get from CSX's Pinoca yard to the industrial park. The only point at which the tracks aren't embedded is right at the switch points (sort of unfortunately). Switch points in the pavement are fairly rare.

At this point, they had just switched Colonial and were coming off the track on the right. TheThe conductor would then throw the switch and they would proceed back into the industrial park (via the track on the left) to work for several hours.
