Exploring nature, math confluences again.

As always a good dose of attempted magic.

I have always been entranced by the lines of growth in nature.

This is a kids show (Seireishojotai - which translates as “Elemental Girls”) in Japan about 5 highschool girls who are actually sexy Eco-super heroes that fight polluters and other environmental villains.

i just think its rad that their costumes are so skimpy in a kids show.

I am definitely going Green (or maybe pink - i dig the glasses)!

Also blogged at the awesome flux.net/elemental-girls. Check it out!

Best viewed at larger size! This collage was made with two photos: a photo of the album, Heavy Weather by the jazz group, Weather Report which included the pyramid and water globe; and a family photo. Photoshop CS was used for effects.

Steel wool light painting. My first experience doing this, after researching online and putting together a rig to create this effect.

Taken at the Port Willunga, South Australia.

Delve greedily and deep!

I've extended the deadline for the Elemental Contest on my forums, to try to drum up some more entries. Please head over to SSLF and consider entering! You can win stuff!

FUTURE’S SO BRIGHT -- In Disney and Pixar’s “Elemental,” fiery young woman Ember (voice of Leah Lewis) lives with her immigrant parents in Firetown—a borough of Element City, where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. Here are several 1oz samples of pure elemental metals. I tried to get a nice variety - bars, rounds, and hand-poured ingots.

Top: copper, zinc, nickel

Middle: indium, bismuth, lead

Bottom: tin, silver, titanium

I have a very large magnet that I used on these. The nickel is very ferromagnetic. Most of the others are diamagnetic, with copper and silver producing the strongest response. Lead and bismuth have the weakest response. Titanium is very slightly paramagnetic, but it's hard to tell.

The copper and silver I've had for a while, and they show some oxidization. The rest are new arrivals from eBay. Indium was the most expensive, followed by silver. The rest were all under $8 each. I have a 1oz bar of pure iron on the way, and plan to pick up some others.

I have samples of tungsten and gallium as well, but not 1oz samples.
