Magnesium (Mg) is # 12 on the Periodic Table of Elements. Elemental magnesium is a silvery-gray metal. It is one of many "strategic metals". Magnesium is produced by processing various ore minerals such as dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2, calcium magnesium carbonate), magnesite (MgCO3, magnesium carbonate), and brucite (Mg(OH)2, magnesium hydroxide). Most ores are "burned" to MgO (magnesium oxide) to make "magnesia refractories", which are bricks used for lining furnaces in the glass and metallurgy industries.

Twenty-two isotopes of magnesium are known - three occur naturally. Magnesium-24 is the most common. Magnesium-25 and magnesium-26 are less common.

This photo is a picture of sand that I took of my Japanese garden that I have in my room. The sand shows a texture of roughness, and grainy. Just by looking at the photo you can picture what the sand feels like. This would be an example of visual texture in art. I liked this photo because it reminded me of being at the beach.

Silicon (Si) is # 14 on the Periodic Table of Elements. It forms by late-stage nuclear fusion in certain types of stars. Elemental silicon is a silvery-gray semi-metal. It is the # 2 most common element in Earth's crust (oxygen is # 1) and is abundant in many minerals (e.g., quartz) and rocks (e.g., granite). The most common silicon-bearing mineral is quartz, SiO2. Quartz and all other silicate minerals have the same fundamental atomic structure - the silica tetrahedron, which consists of one small silicon atoms surrounded by four large oxygen atoms in the shape of a triangle-base pyramid.

Twenty-three isotopes of silicon are known - five of them occur naturally. Silicon-28 is the most common. Silicon-29 and silicon-30 occur in small amounts. Silicon-31 and silicon-32 are unstable, radioactive isotopes that occur in trace amounts only.
