Yay! My laser cut plastic from Ponoko arrived and like the best ikea flatpack it assembled together and all the parts actually fit!
It's six rectangles with slots in the top and bottom and ridges on the side, front and back walls. It doesn't hold itself together very well if you aren't careful, though a bit of glue would soon fix that. For now I'm leaving it as it is.
The main control PCB goes on the outside back, where you can easily access the buttons to change the time. Power supply is inside on one side wall, and the two nixie driver boards themselves are on the bottom. Amazingly, my laser cut holes line up with the holes in the PCBs and I am able to screw everything into place! Hurrah!

well not really, i sure know the F-16 much, MUCH better than this stuff!
i scored some really old equipment (oscilloscope and pulse generator), but i have no idea how to use it. cant even produce a sine wave as-is. :(
any ideas are welcome, of course.
well, at least those things smell strongly of electronics when in operation. so yeah, i think i'll just go to sleep while smelling their scent of nerdyness for now. =)

Made right here in Ann Arbor. Purchased at the Kiwanis Thrift Sale. A small pawl in the gear block assembly was broken but I found a super junker at Antelope Antiques and Coins, removed the good pawl, and replaced it.

I found these HF kits for old log phones for 1€ each. Bought the two complete ones I could find. Lots of useful things in the mounting kit and a neat aluminium box with this inside. Mostly I was interested in that box. Those are horribly expensive. But there's loads of stuff there and essentially abandoned, so I decided I could do a fair job recycling it.
Handheld and sunlit. I really should make a rig for this type of shots. And that lightbox/tent.
Here's a closeup of the mechanism that allows an old-style ball mouse to detect your hand movements. There's a light beam running between the transparent square (an LED-style light emitter) and the black square (a photocell/light detector). As you move your hand, the mouse ball moves too. It pushes against a roller that turns the spoked wheel, breaking the light beam repeatedly. Counting the number of times the beam is broken gives a precise measurement of how far your hand has moved.

Using a series of Neodymium magnets, I cleaned up my desk, picking up the trimmed off LED legs from a project I had just soldered together. (An Adafruit LoL Shield - www.adafruit.com/products/274)
The legs stuck to the magnet, orientating themselves to match the magnetic field lines coming from the strong magnet.
