GM 082 hauls the 0955hrs Belview-Portlaoise steel train through the Kikenny countryside at Roughfield, a few miles after Lavistown Loop.

The setting: A late afternoon, driving between Sydney and Brisbane one weekend. I stopped at the roadside to gawk and take countless photos of a pair of Black-shouldered Kites / White-tailed Kites / Australian Kites (depends on who you ask...)
This transformer was 180 degrees away from my subjects, but as birds go, they are not 100% cooperative. So, it was nice to spend a few moments capturing an interesting subject in an interesting situation where it wasn't likely to move or fly away... :-)

Maxwell Dillon, the first Electro, is an enemy of Spider-Man who gained the ability to control electricity after being struck by lightning while working on a power line. Electro has since become one of Spider-Man's most enduring foes, becoming part of the collective rogue team known as the Sinister Six.
*Nothing original about the mini-figure. I think every collector owns him. I like the way he was designed, so I changed nothing. Had some fun toying with the background and some filters though.

My favorite SLR from the late 60's. Big, robust, well built and finished. I love the gothic "Y" on the prism housing. TTL with LED -> and <- symbols indicating over- and under-exposure in the viewfinder, along the lines of the Electro 35 RF series. I have mounted the Pentacon which has much closer focus capabilities than the native Yashinon, although a bit slower (1.8 vs 1.7). I really love the results from this lens.
A little electro-shock, anyone? Nice lightning bolt, just outside of Grimes Iowa from the storm that blew thru Adair to Bondurant, knocking off the roof of the Wooden Nickel bar.

These plasma balls have always fascinated me as a kid & great to see my kids just as fascinated. Just to actually feel the raw power beneath your fingertips divided by a millimetre thick dome of glass, you can actually hear the energy crackling within the dome !
A much smaller orb in its center serves as an electrode. Plasma filaments extend from the inner electrode to the outer glass insulator, giving the appearance of multiple constant beams of colored light . The beams initially follow the electric field lines of the dipole, but move upwards due to convection.
Placing a hand near the glass alters the high-frequency electric field causing a single beam to migrate from the inner ball to the point of contact. An electric current is produced within any conductive object near the orb, as the glass does not block the electromagnetic field created by the electric current flowing through the plasma (though the insulator does block the current itself).The glass acts as a dielectric in a capacitor formed between the ionized gas and the hand.

Pictured with the ST-7 tripod which was made for Yashica in West Germany. I haven't seen this model before with the chrome details. They are usually all black with red trim. From a Yashica sales brochure from the early 1970s.

As promised at the end of yesterday's set, for the start of today's we're approaching the Columbus Kmart's electronics department. Here's an overview with the department visible on the left side of your screen, and the remainder of the front actionway stretching off towards the former KCafé and the store's entrance off in the distance.
I don't really know of any other Kmarts that have electronics in the front center of the store like this. Definitely not the layout in any Kmart I've ever been to, and I don't believe I've seen it a lot (if ever) online, either. So this store is certainly notable in that respect!

This Yashica TL-Electro resembles a lot the Pentax Spotmatic F. Possibly this was no coincidence and it is all for the better since it is nicely designed, looking robust, yet elegant. The camera is ultra conservative, the Spotmatic F was more advanced as it featured open TTL metering, while the Praktica LLC with its electric simulation would resemble a science fiction device to the Yashica engineers. Still, the camera seems well built, but lacks the mechanical refinement of the Spotmatic, like the advance lever that it doesn’t feel as smooth. The viewfinder is quite ok, much better than the Praktica offering and uses LEDs instead of a needle. Opposite to what the name might suggest, the Electro is just to denote the presence of the said LED’s, as this is a fully mechanical camera. This was to cash on the success of the Electro 35, no doubt. I find the camera a lot more reined than any L series Praktica, but it is also true that it has to do with an horizontal cloth shutter, but so did the Olympus OM series.
The wonderful thing about M42 cameras and lenses is that one can create an outfit as we like. In this case I coupled the Yashica TL-Electro to a Petri lens, the 55/1.8 that enjoys a good reputation and it is much nice to use in the Yashica than in a Petri SLR.
