MJRX SD40-2 2018, built as UP SD40-2 8012 in June 1974, sits outside of Railway Service Contractors in the Fairfax District on a stormy March afternoon. MJRX 2018 was painted for the Fort Worth and Western in late 2010 after being bought from National Rail Equipment, and operated as the only "Snoot Nose" locomotive on FWWR until recently when it was acquired by Rail Service Contractors and received black patches and new MJRX reporting marks. Being from Texas, this locomotive is definitely out of place here in Kansas, but the livery was coincidentally based on both railroads that have operated the Falls City Subdivision and switching operations in and around Fairfax; Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific.

Not many things can beat a good storm chase!

A breathtaking night unfolds above the electrically lit expanse of southern India.

From the flight deck of a high-cruising airliner, the Southern Milky Way stretches across a star-studded sky, accompanied by the Southern Cross constellation and the dark silhouette of the Coalsack Nebula.

In a rare celestial coincidence, a vivid red sprite crackles in the upper atmosphere, balancing electric charge from a hidden thunderstorm far below.

At the same moment, a Lyrid meteor bids its fiery farewell, ionizing the air in its path and causing it to leave a brilliant, fleeting trail.

Ancient starlight, the brief luminescence of two atmospheric wonders, and the human-made glow from the Earth below - all converge onto the sensor of a camera nestled in the flight deck. That sensor, momentarily electrified, fed its signal to a computer's circuits, allowing this image to exist and now be seen on your own electrically powered screen.

We truly live in an electric world.

The other day, I saw this guy slowly walk from the visitor center of Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge all the way to the town of Alviso. He was using a walking stick to balance himself. With the electric towers and telephone poles on one side of the road, I took a shot at him using my telephoto lens to compress the scene.

On July 13, 2015, a line of severe thunderstorms developed southeast out of Wisconsin and brought 40 to 60 MPH wind gusts to portions of far northern Illinois. With the extreme instability came almost continuous lightning. While a lot of it was intra-cloud, some of the bolts made a grand appearance for all to see. Taken in Waterman, IL, looking north.

Metrolines BDE2760 made its debut on the 142 earlier today, marking the start of the electrification of 142 with BYDs and Wright Electroliners. BDE2760 and BDE2761 started the service of 142 today early this morning.

The electric feel of this appeals to me. Base image created using a Canon PowerShot. It was processed using Photoshop, Redfield Fractalius and some general tweaking. Happy Sliders Sunday!

Big monsoon storm rolled into the city Friday night. We tried to get to a desired location in the East Valley to compose some shots. But the front was moving so fast that it overtook us. When the pouring rain and wind eased up, I managed to get a few of it behind us.

Lens was a Tamron 01BB 24mm f/2.5.

Spent a couple of hours with the Children of the Corn on a deserted road while a storm front passed over. Who knew corn could generate so much noise?

The storm came in with a wallop...and I was lucky enough to be able to get out and shoot after the worst of the rain and wind moved on. Still got drenched...and more than a few times the lightning had me second guessing myself out there in that field. Oh well...devil hates a sissy :-)
