Roby (and Huyton) were to be fitted with passenger lifts as part of the four-tracking and electrification process. Roby station building is ancient, so the lift therein was designed to avoid external alterations to the building. In essence, this would involve gutting it, except for the Booking Office, digging the shaft and installing the lift.
The awning is cantilevered against the station structure, so gutting would remove the counterbalance risking the awning toppling onto the tracks. The awnings were therefore propped up.

A package of improvements will take place across Phase 4 alongside electrification, such as raising line speeds and removing hazards such as level crossings.
Bolton station will have Platform 5 reinstated. It will be at the extreme western side of the station complex and will enable trains heading from Manchester towards Lostock to overtake, considerably enhancing capacity.
It is currently used in part as a car park and in part not at all.

this is an experimental piece that i was playing with to see how well to blend 2 colors at the essence and burst of light. i liked the orange better
The line to Blackpool South reopened as planned after a Winter blockade to undertake major route improvement and electrification works on the route to Blackpool North.
Kirkham and Wesham station has been substantially rebuilt with a third platform for the first time ever, bi-directional signalling and a lift in the pipeline.
Ashton Street, Preston; please note the electrified third line.
The driving cab of this southbound DMU is between two of the sets of concrete blocks which are being installed to act as bases for electrification masts (stanchions).
The last ties between metal bridgework and foundations having cut, the bridge is lifted clear of the foundations.
The slings had been positioned at the best estimate available, which were a bit adrift..

From May 9-20, more than 250 students, faculty, sponsors and organizers gathered for the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge series finale in Arizona.
This event marks the culmination of the series, which has challenged 11 North American university teams to reengineer a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer utilizing electrification, advanced propulsion systems and automated vehicle technology to improve the energy efficiency, safety and consumer appeal of their vehicle.

St Helens 2015 or Eastern Europe in 1947?
I would not normally include this shot, as the electrification element is obscure. Close examination shows a mast, complete with yellow tab, immediately to the left of the red brick chimney stack.
The night before ITV had screened the first of a new series of "Foyle's War" where this chimney appeared as a backdrop in scenes set in the USSR or eastern Poland in 1947. Other scenes used Liverpool's waterside in similar ways.

Wrinkley included this "then" shot from a while ago showing the original mast layout. Looking from far to near, the masts go portal, TTC, boomless portal. Note the contrast with the following "now" shot A832r.

Van de Graaff generator is an electrostatic generator which uses a moving belt to accumulate electric charge on a hollow metal globe on the top of an insulated column, creating very high electric potentials. It produces very high voltage direct current (DC) electricity at low current levels. It was invented by American physicist Robert J. Van de Graaff in 1929.[1] The potential difference achieved in modern Van de Graaff generators can reach 5 megavolts. A tabletop version can produce on the order of 100,000 volts and can store enough energy to produce a visible spark. Small Van de Graaff machines are produced for entertainment, and in physics education to teach electrostatics; larger ones are displayed in science museums.
n.*Electrification:
1.the activity of thrilling or markedly exciting some person or group
activating, energizing, activation - the activity of causing to have energy and be active
2. The act of providing electricity.

Grime Ford Bridge MVE2/41, which carries Grimeford Lane over the railway..
A classic of it's type, built to last forever, but scheduled to be demolished the following weekend.
However, it was reprieved at the eleventh hour. On the day after this shot was taken the disruption caused by the loss of this seemingly minor road led to second thoughts on timing, with the work being rescheduled to later in 2015. The road is minor, but it is one of few to cross the Douglas Valley, with others closed at the same time - eg the Chorley Road Skew Bridge - the disruption is avoidably severe. One at a time is the new plan.

The long-disused South to West platform's weeds thrive in the Summer sun. Before long they would be crushed under track and clobber as it will be extensively used as a storage point for pointwork and electrification metalwork.

All level crossings on Phase 2 are scheduled to be closed or replaced by a bridge.
This foot crossing stands west of Horwich Parkway station as shown in Photo 3472l. That shot is the reverse of this one, being taken from the footbridge in the distance. A sign proclaims the footpath to be maintained by Bolton local authority. There is evidence of footfall, though no-one passed in the 50 minutes I was there.
An electrification mast base stands in the left foreground, with evidence of others beyond.

The first wires appear on the Castlefield Viaduct in Manchester.
Electrifying this critical short stretch will allow electric trains to travel between the Chat Moss route and Manchester Piccadilly and between Bolton and Piccadilly. The former will open up both Liverpool and Scotland to electric traffic, the latter will enhance the Scottish option.

So I found my camera (my brother had stolen it) and decided to go crazy with photoshop. Well, maybe not crazy, but this is the most editing my flickr has seen yet. I really need to put photoshop on my laptop, it would make things so much easier.
Anyways, life is good, summer is so close I can almost taste it and I start skating again tomorrow. Also, it's quite awkward when your dad sees you with lipstick all over your face...

Soho Street bridge is the next bridge beyond (ie west of) this bridge which says above all that Bolton looks ahead.
The station is behind the cameraman's right shoulder. The structure to the right, beyond the tracks, is part of the brand new transport interchange being built on the former railway triangle immediately north of the station.
The tracks in the foreground will be electrified and the former fourth platform will be reinstated with a new line to be laid beyond the greenery in the immediate foreground.
