The center-pivot irrigation system is considered to be a highly efficient system which helps conserve water. However, it is now understood that groundwater level elevation decreases when the rate of extraction by irrigation exceeds the rate of recharge.
The number of Sandhill Cranes wintering in the Sulphur Springs Valley has increased dramatically since the 1950s. Record keeping in this area began in 1970, when nearly a thousand cranes were observed in the entire valley. Now up to 30,000 sandhill cranes may be present in winter.
Cranes winter in close proximity to harvested grain fields. Corn is preferred. Therefore the increase in the number of wintering cranes is probably due to the abundant food available in the harvested grain fields of the Sulphur Springs Valley.
Wintering areas selected by cranes also feature shallow water roosting areas with low or no vegetation. Nearby Whitewater Draw allows the Cranes to spend the night standing in shallow waters to evade predators, and then fly out in early morning, usually about sunrise, to feed and socialize for 3 to 4 hours in the surrounding area.
Following feeding the birds fly to loafing areas, which may be the night roost site, other wetland areas, fallow fields or simply desert grassland areas.
Sometimes the cranes return to feeding areas in the afternoon for an hour or two, but the afternoon feeding flight is much more variable than the morning flight. From near sunset until virtually dark the cranes return to roosting sites.
