Food service businesses (restaurants and grocery stores) use 2.5 times more energy than the average commercial business. Think about it: all the stoves, ovens, heat lamps, dish washers, refrigerators, and fryers turning out meal after meal, it makes sense that they are energy intensive. However, kitchens are also hectic places where simple energy wasters often get ignored in the hustle and bustle.
Richard Young, from the Food Service Technology Center in California, highlighted a long list of simple changes that food service businesses can make that can shave big bucks off their energy bills at his presentation at Dunwoody College on Monday March 21st. From stopping leaking faucets and closing ice maker lids all the way to replacing exhaust hoods and re-doing their lighting, businesses have a huge variety of opportunities, from small to large, free to expensive.

Energy efficiency and lower heating bills and consumption of fuel or electricity in historic buildings can be achieved the old fashioned way with simple storm windows that are custom fit and properly fitted over older windows. This salvages original historic fabric and preserves the aesthetic look of early designs; it also conserves the energy and artisanal labor embodied in the crafting of the original windows. The Jay Heritage Center received 2 recent grants - one for $25,000 to fund capital improvements to the 1907 Van Norden Carriage House and another from Con Edison to create educational programs around the implementation of these measures - these are teachable moments about energy efficiency and adaptive reuse of historic structures.
Step 3: Bruce MacDonald lays out the mortises
Storm windows are a second layer of window. They reduce air movement in and out of the existing windows. They give you an extra barrier to keep out wind and cold in the winter. According to the US Department of Energy, storm windows can help better insulate a home and reduce heating loss by up to 50%.

One of the many reasons I love Hong Kong is its efficiency - in particular its transportation. I am lucky enough to live in North Point, where MTR, buses, trams, ferries are within 5 mins walk.
Didn't intend to get the such low shutter speed with my point-and-shoot but it looks good!

Arizona Daily Star Article-From ground up, new home is model of energy efficiency....By Dan Sorenson Arizona Daily Star
At first glance, there's nothing about this new 2,000-square-foot house in Civano, other than a rooftop solar panel, to suggest it's unusual. But an occupant would get the picture, in vivid green, when the laughable utility bills arrived.
The ultra-energy-efficient home uses state-of-the-art materials and techniques to cut energy consumption to one-fifth that of a new home built to current building codes, according to Richard Barna, director of building sciences and green building for Pepper Viner Homes.
Known as the Pepper Viner/BASF High-Performance Home, it is a collaboration between the local home builder and BASF, an international chemical and building materials firm. It combines state-of-the-art insulation, solar water and space heating, building materials that don't give off noxious gases, a vapor barrier under the slab, recycled tile, and graywater and rainwater conservation systems.
The house on Tucson's southeast side will be open for a public tour at Civano North Ridge today. But many of the features are not readily apparent.
The house's SIPS (Structural Insulated Panels) modular-wall construction system virtually eliminates leaks and attains a near R-30 insulation rating, according to Barna. The modular system uses large sections of polystyrene sandwiched between sustainable wafer board for exterior walls. Window and door openings are pre-cut at the factory to builder specifications. But Barna said the SIPS walls look like ordinary 2x6 stud walls.
One of the two new types of BASF foam insulation used in the demonstration house may soon offer a solution for old desert houses with inadequate roof insulation, Barna said.
The spray-on insulation has a hard surface — hard enough to walk upon — and a soft open-cell interior. So it could be sprayed on top of an old flat roof, instead of removing the old roof and installing four or six inches of new insulation between the joists or rafters. It would save the cost of removing and replacing the old roof, and provide better insulation, Barna said. It is not yet available locally.
The house also uses all nontoxic materials — adhesives, sealants and wood composites for cabinets — and will meet the new federal interior air standards.
The floors are all polished and dyed concrete. The concrete uses roughly twice the normal amount of fly ash, a recycled material used to replace cement in concrete.
Outside the house the landscaping uses a rainwater collection system hooked up to an automatic watering system that is tied into a weather network that bases watering times and amounts on weather conditions. Trees are watered using an active graywater system that pumps water from drains and sinks to a network of pipes two to three feet underground, to deep-water trees. The graywater isn't collected and held, eliminating storage problems, but is used as soon as it is detected in the system, Barna said.
Bill Viner of Pepper Viner said some of the technologies and building materials are already in use, and that he expects more will be in demand, and supplied, when the housing industry picks up after the recession.
"Not only will there be greater demand, but I think the builders will do it because it's the right thing to do," Viner said.
He wouldn't estimate the house's value, or what it would cost to reproduce it, but he said a similar floor plan house in Civano North Ridge development sells for $299,900.
And he said other houses in the development already use some of the methods to meet a standard based on heating and cooling costs-savings of at least 50 percent of that of a conventional home.
Viner said the demonstration home is under consideration for the top (platinum) rating in the national green building certification system, LEED. And he said it was already awarded the Pima County certification system's top (emerald) rating.

This guy perched high above a pond was waiting for the sun to come out to illuminate the water beneath. Either that or was waiting for Hank to use his cellphone to give directions to a pair of intrepid Canadian frontiersfolk lost fighting their way through the tropical jungle that is Florida's highways. In any event when the sun did show the bird swooped on an unsuspecting fish below. Quite an effective way to get breakfast without the effort of flying around too much or maybe it is just a lazy Osprey.
The bird looked pleased with it's catch but Hank wasn't quite so happy about missing his ;0)

The NRCS-CCPI plan helped Leon craft a plan to irrigate his orchard more effieciently.
Now, on each 10 acres of orchard land, two probes are buried to measure soil moisture at different depths.
The sensors relay soil moisture information, while a weather station in the orchard relays wind and weather information, via radio.
The data allows Leon to water his crops so that they get more of what they need - and also save water.
At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas recently I was also able to experience a test drive in the Vision EQXX ultra EV. Engineered in just 18 months and representing the most efficient Mercedes-Benz ever built, this experimental unit acts as a barometer for production EQ models, which may eventually inherit deviations from its technology, energy storage capabilities, and driving range. The development intention of the vehicle was to produce a battery with 100 kW capacity, lightweight construction, increased aero, and extreme efficiency. The result is an EV that achieves an extensive range of more than 745 miles on a single charge.

Enters the E time, the high efficiency and the quick rhythm have become the modern work mainstream. However many faces the computer to be very long period of time, this young people premature appear in the physiological old age, the physique decline and the psychology weak phenomenon. How should the computer work people face up to this kind of early aging syndrome?
Pay attention to maintain the correct posture and the gaze distance, the gaze is away from too near or the posture is not correct, approaches the computer fluorescent screen excessively, compared with easy to receive the radiation the injury, when particularly uses the notebook .Try not to let anyone back toward the screen of the computer, because the strongest radiate is back, followed by two side of the screen, the weak positive instead of radiation. On the meanwhile, we should adjust good computer monitors and seat relative height. When a person’s line of sight and towards the center of the vertical angle for 115 degrees, people around the neck muscles relax. Common desk is written down as computer design and highly unsuitable, long time on the Internet, head cervical will soon strain. If no conditions can change of desk, chair cushion, will gradually until the neck feel relaxed.
The computer already became many person of work and the life “the companion,” when using the computer, they should pay much attention to not long staring at the computer, which will be easy to create the eye strain or the slight impairment. The people generally 1 minute blinks approximately 20 times, with rapt attention gazes, will cause the tear secretion reduction, the entire eyeball skin drying throughout. As a result, office of the most obvious facial beauty is aging eyes. Use moist effect eye gel are, besides can reduce black rim of the eye, eye problems, but also have improved wrinkles and fine lines. Eye gel and the function of the eye, just colloidal material feels more relaxed, the daytime use skin no burden, can eliminate pouch, and relieve eye skin symptoms. But not everyone have such condition, for those who have not entered into the society, have not their own money, they can do some eye execrise, it can relax the ocularnerve and the blood vessel pressure, lets the blood circulation be better.
In a word, for the sake of ourselves, we had better to do some eye exercise so as to protect our own eyes, rather than for others. At the same time, we should take a break when we stare at the computer some time, and look out of the window more. Don’t be idle, and take action quickly.

It's HOT out! But that doesn't mean you should have to break a sweat in your Cadillac. I invested some time into making that a reality once again for this car.
This car was "retrofitted" to R134a in 2004. From the time that I owned it, performance was forgivable until the outside temperature got into the mid 80s and above, or parking in the sun for an extended period of time. Basically it exhibited all of the flaws of a converted car. When it was really hot out, the AC was a bad joke, especially when driving slowly. After exhausting everything else, the only choice was to go back to R12.
I had never done any real AC work besides the occasional charge with a can until the air coming out "felt good." I wanted to have an AC shop do everything, but no one in my area does anything with R12 anymore. I was definitely nervous, as, despite it sucking, the 134 system didn't leak at all. I found that it really wasn't that bad, and I would do it again if I had to.
This is what everything looked like before I started. The compressor was changed in 1991...R4's are not known to live that long so it was definitely going to be replaced. I bought an ancient but new Harrison 200 on Ebay some years ago in preparation for this. Here it is getting ready oiled and ready to spin for the first time in decades! Hopefully it will hold up.
At some point the evaporator core was replaced, evidenced by the black goop sealing the box. I wasn't sure of it's condition so I was going to replace it too (it wan't in bad shape and was probably a waste to anyone who might be considering undertaking something like this). I'm glad I did it because the way the box was sealed really wasn't the best and was probably sacrificing some efficiency. I didn't take any pictures of the box itself, but the sealant that was used was a nightmare to remove completely. This was really the worst part of the job, as whoever did it last must have bought stock in the sealant company. Even the drain was filled full of the stuff
So I'm not sure how exactly it was draining before (it did drain though, no standing condensate) There is a bolt that holds the bottom of the HVAC box to the firewall, just about where the passenger's left foot would rest that goes behind the carpet, through to the engine bay. This bolt was missing, and the box was surprisingly...you guessed it, glued to the firewall with about a 1/2 tube of sealant! I was able to find a nut and bolt that was appropriate to hold the box as it was designed to. While I was behind the carpet, I also noticed this.
This rubber plug has 3 vacuum lines running through it. Mine was loose, so much so that if one shined a light at the firewall from under the hood it would come through the car. It was a bitch to get a grasp on and seat back into position. I had no idea that it was there, much less that it was loose and causing an air leak into the car right by one of the manifold-to-Y pipes. I only mention this because I told my buddy about it who owns a 1985 car and his was just kinda dangling there like mine was. Worth looking at if you own a car of this era. I had to use two pair of tiny needlenose to put enough power on it to pop it back in.
There was nothing really wrong with the lines or condenser, so they would be flushed out, 134a-dapters removed, mineral oiled and put back into service. At an HVAC pro's recommendation, I used RX11 AC flush. Nasty stuff, but did a great job. It is really important to get the 134a oil out of the system, along with any garbage that may have accumulated over the years. My job was made easier by tons of green dye that was in the system.
The orifice tube is supposed to collect physical contaminants. They really shouldn't be that dirty, provided you're not working with a car that had a blown compressor. No idea how old this tube was, but it was not bad.
Once I had the system flushed, I put everything back together using one of those AC o-ring kits. My mechanic checked it for leaks, and then vacuumed it down. Finally I was ready to charge! I was excited, and regrettably forgot to take pictures of the process (I even bought a gauge set). Anyway, the only one more excited than me was the car!
Can you see the cold?
Vent temps are in the mid 40's around town, NYC. Figure 90 +/- 5 and very humid. On the highway, I've seen as low as 37, but no lower. Of note, these measurements were taken from the center vents using a digital temp sensor, not a vent thermometer. Regardless, of the vent temp, the car itself is actually cool inside which is something I remember about R12 that even newer cars that have much more consistent performance seem to lack. Ice coming out of the vents, but you have to be in the airflow to actually be cool. Not so anymore. I'm so pleased with this, and kinda shocked that it worked! To anyone contemplating AC work, I recommend watching this guy's videos, especially this one
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh0CGLWX_Wc
It helped me out a lot (read: gave me confidence to tear into an air conditioning system) I'll be back with an unrelated update sometime soon, and I don't mean 3 months soon like last time!
