Krisann and I kicked off our inaugural monthly potluck of k-12 design educators/administrators/curriculum writers/enthusiasts at the Orientation Center. There were about 16 of us there, lots of food, and lots of great ideas. People were excited enough that we are going to continue on a monthly basis. Yay!

When Experience Becomes Form: Museum Educator Workshop with Individuals Thought to be Associated with The Order of the Third Bird

In a workshop session with museum educators, individuals thought to be associated with the collective The Order of the Third Bird presented research on the history of the collective and led looking exercises drawn from Adolph Huxley's "The Art of Seeing” before facilitating a group reflection and discussion. Visitors are invited to join us for a public program on June 4, When Experience Becomes Form: An Attentional Exercise Developed in Conjunction with the Order of the Third Bird, during which educators will implement the techniques they developed in this workshop and lead visitors in attentional protocols.

Hawaii’s 2014 State Teacher of the Year is a 12-year veteran educator who inspires his students through creative hands-on projects. Honolulu District Teacher of the Year Matthew Lawrence of Waikiki Elementary was named the 2014 State Teacher of the Year this afternoon.
The state’s top teaching award is presented annually to a classroom teacher selected from more than 11,000 educators within the Hawaii State Department of Education. Lawrence was among seven District Teachers of the Year recognized today.
The State Teacher of the Year is selected from the current District Teachers of the Year:
•Teresa Cramer (Central Oahu District, Hale Kula Elementary),
•Dayna Hironaka (Windward Oahu District, Kahaluu Elementary),
•Matthew Lawrence (Honolulu District, Waikiki Elementary),
•Elizabeth Timbal (Hawaii District, Keaau High),
•Terra Wight (Leeward Oahu District, Nanakuli High and Intermediate),
•Anthony Williams (Maui District, Paia Elementary), and
•Justin Yamagata (Kauai District, Waimea Canyon Middle)
The Polynesian Cultural Center, the State Teacher of the Year program’s corporate sponsor for 28 years, provides monetary awards to each District Teacher of the Year and conducted a colorful performance featuring music and dance.
SMART Technologies presented each District Teacher of the Year with gifts of instructional software, and other classroom technology to the State Teacher of the Year.
The Hawaii Automobile Dealers’ Association awarded the State Teacher of the Year with a free one-year lease on a new car, and Aloha Petroleum will be providing gas cards to each District Teacher of the Year.
The Korle Bu Surgical Skills Training Center is managed by U.S-based International Aid. Steve Rienstra, of International Aid, showed Interplast visiting educators Drs. Hagan and Rottler the training operating room.

Walton served as the Librarian of the Michigan State Normal School and Michigan State Normal College from 1892-1932 when she died. She was instrumental in planning the first library building on campus, now known as Ford Hall.
Vivian, a gifted educator at Kahala Elementary School, is a passionate advocate for sustainability and local agriculture. She founded “Give It Fresh Today” (G.I.F.T) at the farmer’s market at Kapiolani Community College to provide an opportunity for weekly shoppers and home gardeners with a convenient way to donate locally grown fruits and vegetables to those in need. Recognized by Pacific Business News as one of Hawai‘i's “40 Under 40,” and the Honolulu Star Advertiser as one of "10 Who Made a Difference" in 2010, she enriches the lives of children with service learning and origami, is a practitioner of the Feldenkrais Method, and enjoys swing dance.
