One of the most popular buildings in São Paulo

Opened in 1966, Edificio Copan, Oscar Niemeyer's sinuously designed 38 storey residential building ,right, is a significant architectural landmark of Sao Paulo Centro. With its 1160 condominium apartments & 5000 residents, it's one of Brazil's largest buildings & has the largest floor space of any residential building in the world. Steve-h doesn't think he'd like to live in it. 1160 apts!! Nor would I *~*

I'm off work sick at the moment, so I'm unable to shoot more material. I'm reduced to mining the hard drive for golden oldies. Well, it passes the time.

The Edifício Copan wa designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (one of my favorite architects). Many of Niemeyer's designs use curved lines.

Construction began in 1952 and was completed in 1962. The building is 38 stories high and holds 1160 apartments. There are so many residents that the postal service assigned it its own zip code.

I took this photo with my Konica 35mm camera with Kodachrome slide film. The image was faded and had large mildew spots on it. Thanks to Photoshop, I was able to resuscitate it to some degree, but it still has lots of tiny black spots. It is not perfect, but infinitely better than it was. If you could zoom in enough, you'd find a zillion spots of dirt.

After posting this, I looked at other online photos of this building and decided that when I had my slides transferred to digital, this one had been flipped horizontally. So this is now the corrected version.

The fortress

The fortress, or Rock of Arigna, has for the first time mentioned in 1047 in a diploma of Emperor Henry III in favor of the Chapter of San Salvatore in Turin. However it is not the present castle, the construction of which, on the previous ruins, is due at the end of the thirteenth century, when the most impressive restructuring of Chieri territory occurred at the end of the war between the powerful Marquis Guglielmo VII of Monferrato and the confederation municipalities, including Chieri and Asti, supported by Amadeus V.

Of the initial complex of a low protective wall, a residential building and a square tower, pin for the defense, they are still visible part of the keep and little else.

The upper castle was heavily damaged in the fourteenth century by the mercenary militias Facino Dog; It was later remodeled and enlarged in the following century, but was changed the previous defensive structure.

The palace was surrounded by curtain walls reinforced with square towers on three corners, becoming the center of the architectural complex. Only one of these towers has survived the bad weather.

In addition to the evolution of the art of war, which-thanks to the use of mouths to fire- made void the castle, contributed to its decline in the eighteenth century the construction of a villa of the Coast of the Trinity, full of frescoes grotesque scenes classic, landscapes, popular for the stucco that adorned the ceilings of some rooms.

Near the villa there are two buildings, built in the Gothic Revival style, once used as stables and warehouses of the carriages. Despite this function, they are good looking, although degraded, and can be brought under Piedmontese Gothic Revival architecture of the period of Carlo Alberto.

The lower castle

It was originally a square fortified with four cylindrical towers and a sweet arcaded courtyard. It was built in the mid-fifteenth century by the Arigna Coast when the old fortress lost its strategic role. After about a century, the castle began to decay and was transformed into a farmhouse. Currently an accurate restoration brought the building to its ancient splendor and is now surrounded by a park.

If you swoon over architecture and the decorative arts the way I do, the Old City district of Montevideo, Uruguay, is the place to be. Wonders abound at every turn!

The image of this tower was marred by lots of overhead wires and external HVAC units, but they're all gone thanks to Photo Shop!

From the Web, as translated and slightly mangled by Google:

The Edificio Centenario is a building in the Uruguayan provincial capital Montevideo .

Built in 1929, this multi-storey building is the work of architects Octavio De los Campos , Milton Puente and Hipólito Tournier, and is located on Calle 25 de Mayo 555 , corner of Ituzaingó in Ciudad Vieja . It is attributed to the style of Dutch Expressionism and has been classified as Monumento Histórico Nacional since 1989.

And:

The Centennial building was built in 1930 by the Arqs. De los Campos, Puente y Tournier. The original program consisted of offices for rent with ground floor and subsoil with commercial destination. The type floor, repeated six levels, is solved by a double cradle of offices with services that are expressed in facade by means of vertical protruding bodies, fragmenting the facade so as to integrate it to the rhythm of the immediate parcel.

The tower, with expressionist inspiration finishes the corner, projecting its silhouette that alludes to the nautical architecture, returning to the idea of the viewpoints of Montevideo. The basement of the ground floor gives unity to the building and links it to the nineteenth century buildings. It is one of the most representative examples of the modern architecture of the first quarter of a century being MHN since 1989. It is maintained in good condition although the humidities and cracks in the facades evidence the lack of maintenance.

English

The Edificio España (Spanish: Spain Building) is one of the tallest buildings in Madrid, Spain. With 25 stories and a height of 117 m (384 ft), it is the 14th tallest building of the Spanish capital, along the Cuatro Torres Business Area highrise buildings. It is also one of the best examples of 20th century architecture in Spain. It was designed by architect Julián Otamendi (architect of the nearby Torre de Madrid) and his brother, engineer Joaquín Otamendi in the Neo-baroque style and constructed from 1948 to 1953. It was the tallest building in Spain until overtaken by the Torre de Madrid in 1957. The building formerly contained a Crowne Plaza Hotel, a shopping centre, apartments, offices, and a rooftop swimming pool. Since its sale in 2005, it has been vacant awaiting renovation into luxury residences. The facade and the lobby will be preserved intact but the remaining structural elements will be modified. Its profile, on Plaza de España at the end of the Gran Via, compliments the neighboring skyscraper Torre de Madrid, making the pair important architectural landmarks in the city.

Metrovacesa, which owned the structure since its completion, marketed it in April 2005 along with the neighboring Torre de Madrid and other properties in its portfolio to help finance its acquisition of French property company, Gecina. In June of that year, the investment fund of Santander Real, acquired 50% of the building for €138.6 million and committed to purchase the remaining 50%, belonging to the hotel, shortly thereafter. The deal closed in early December 2007. Santander plans to renovate the building, but states that acquiring the necessary approvals in Madrid always takes time. The structure has been vacant awaiting work to begin since the sale.
