Usually I like to shoot Echo during a fiery sunrise or sunset when the red rock glows. Or, in spring when it's stands out in the snow or is peeking through the clouds. This day it was shrouded in heavy smoke from the many wildfires around the state. It always makes me pause to think about the power of Mother Nature ... since it was once a satellite volcano. But this time I thought about the fires ... and the sacrifices. I hope the rain this week brings some much needed relief.
BR Standard 4 No. 75069 crosses Oldbury viaduct on the Severn Valley railway. The Standard was working a train from Bridgnorth-Bewdley - this being the final weekend of operations before the winter shutdown.

But, If you walk softly and silently you might even sneak up on a jackrabbit, fox or coyote . . . shhhhh . . . or even a RATTLESNAKE!!!!
This photo was taken by a Hasselblad 500C medium format film camera with a Carl Zeiss Distagon 1:4 f=50mm lens and a Kowa O-81B ø67 filter using Fuji Neopan Acros film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.
This was a special day. I had dreamed of seeing this view for a long time, and with every step to the north, this was the view I was envisioning. It’s an interesting experience to approach a place you’ve imagined visiting and photographing. As you approach, excitement builds, and for me, so too does anxiety. In these instances, I often feel obligated to take advantage of every moment in front of the view - as if it might disappear or I might miss it if I wait too long. For the vast majority of the time, that feeling has no basis in reality, and is just my own fear of missing a shot. For this day however, it wasn’t far from reality.
We hiked up this valley to get to this view, and for a long time the scene just kept getting better and better. I found myself looking over my shoulder over and over to assess the scene and decide if I should stop walking to photograph it under a bland cloudy sky, but I never did. We progressed on to camp for the night and relaxed. Almost out of nowhere, the cloudy and bland sky started to thin, and all of a sudden the peaks were glowing, and the light had direction and colour!
We frantically put our stuff together and ran over to viewpoints near camp, all the while watching the light run up the walls of the valley. It was a matter of time before this would be gone, and we knew it. I stopped at a less than perfect view and photographed it from there for fear of missing the light. Out of nowhere, my friend turned up and started yelling “Take one more photo then get down from there! It’s much better this way!” He didn’t need to tell me twice, and he was right! We found much more cohesive compositions not far from here.
Given all the effort to get to this spot, the fact that we nearly missed the light was really jarring. It turns out that I was right - if we weren’t paying attention to the weather, we’d have missed this incredible light. We had 3 nights at this location, and this was the only night with any great light - I guess I won’t feel bad looking over my shoulder to watch the weather from here on out!

Echo Reservoir is the lake created by Echo Dam in Summit County, Utah, standing about six miles north of Coalville. The earthen dam was constructed in 1931 by the United States Bureau of Reclamation and was just recently reworked to make it more sturdy and a bit taller. The construction partially accounts for the low level of the lake but it is filling very slowly due to the continuing drought in the western United States.

Bali is a volcanic island and as such has a selection of black rocks and black sand beaches, most notably on the east coast, the north coast and the west coast. White sand beaches can be found on on the South coast and a few select places in East Bali.
One of the most famous west facing beach is Echo Beach, have rough surf and is known to have many rip currents and strong undertow. Also, the quality of a beach can change drastically between seasons.
Echo beach really isn't suitable as a swimming or relaxation beach, but has a solid reputation as a surf beach. The beach is a bit rocky and the sand is blackish and the seawall on which the restaurants are built is not attractive. The surfing attracts a crowd of surfers and watchers, and it is enjoyable to watch the action from the seawall while enjoying the cuisine from the outdoor restaurants and off course this is my favorite beach to hang out with friends or often alone by myself..hehe!
