2019 one photo each day

19th June 2021 :

Wasn't at all sure what the weather was going to do today. It was cloudy for most of it, but the sun did try occasionally. So when I could I wondered around the nature reserve. Better known to locals as the car park!

I was checking out the Agapanthus flowers when I noticed this, so took the photo and when I'd uploaded them I liked it the most.

Each winter I crave lettuce and tomatoes - the most difficult and expensive produce that you can buy in our tiny grocery store. Usually the lettuce is spoiled, to the point that half of it goes into the trash bin - and the tomatoes are hard and tasteless. Well this year I have solved that problem. This year I have two hydroponic gardens up and running. Just a few minutes ago I plucked a large sized cherry tomato, and enjoyed a homegrown tomato with good old fashioned taste.

In this image you see just a few of the tomatoes that are growing on one of my plants. I have been told these plants will keep me in a continuous supply for up to nine months - so I should be good until spring!

In another indoor garden, I have romaine lettuce, green onions, and herbs. Now I can garden in the darkest days of winter. :-)

The Long Corridor is a covered walkway in the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. The total length of the Long Corridor is 728 metres and it is decorated with more than 14,000 paintings, especially on the ceiling and its beams, which divide it into 273 sections. Along the corridor there are four octagonal pavilions. Each of these pavilions symbolises the four climatic seasons of the year. The more than 14,000 paintings have a wide variety of subjects: historical figures, famous buildings, landscapes, flowers, birds, fish, insects... Of particular importance are those depicting folk and traditional tales, fables and episodes from classical Chinese literature. As a part of the Summer Palace, the Long Corridor was included on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December, 1998.

There is no doubt that the Long Corridor is a beautiful place during the day. But it is at night, with the arrival of darkness and the lighting of the chinese lanterns, that it reaches its true splendour, creating a special atmosphere and transforming into a long, luminous and sinuous thread in the midst of the darkness. It is at night when it becomes a magical place, where stories, tales, fables, imagination... come to life and arise. Dreams and tales, in the middle of the night and darkness.

Tranquiliza tu mente. Descansa tus ojos y duerme bien.

Goodnight.

The early hours give light to the surrounding beauty as seen anew each day, sometimes in a clam, but often in an array of bursting colors. I particularly like the low-lying fog that holds to the trees and water giving an alluring glimpse of things to come. In this picture, Pat captured sunrise at the old Horton Pond. This pond lies in the Oregon Coast Range Mountains and was used as a holding pond for hand cut evergreen trees at the turn of the century.

and each one slowly melting away

Leaning haphazardly against each other, this rock formation towers over the Wadi Rum visitor centre. It proceeds to a gradual peak with the highest pillar at its front. The clear, rounded shapes of the pillars standing side-by-side allowed it to inherit its name. Because of it shapes, this mountain look like many things. A collection of lopsided pillars, a procession of figures fanned out behind their leader, the bulwark of a great ship sailing through an ocean of sand. The modern name is taken from TE Lawrence’s memoir of his time in the desert. Though only five of these pillars are immediately visible, the other two are around the side. It is possible to walk around the formation but the best view is from a distance near the visitor centre. The original Arabic name is Jebel al-Mazmar, which means “The Mountain of the Plague.”

This site is one of the most amazing hiking spots in the area. The trail is one of stark contrasts: on one side, flat sands spread long distances, the very picture of the dry, yellow desert of the imagination in summer. In winter and spring, it is scattered with low grasses and bushes that animals come to graze on. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot a camel or two! On the other side, the mountain leaps from the ground in a sheer wall of sandstone and granite. A walk along the base of the rock is done easily at your own pace. Upon approaching the foot of this majestic mountain, tilt your head back and take in the enormity of the pillars. Massive as big-city skyscrapers, these natural formations speak of something ancient. A testament to this place and its withstanding thousands of years of both human and environmental turmoil.

While on my small detour I had a look at what was happening at the building site, I'd found awhile ago : flic.kr/p/2mA3m3K

Brutalist architecture or what? How anyone got permission to build this horrendous looking building in a row of typical houses is unbelievable. However, I do understand that some people might like it ... just.

A pretty dull and damp day today, but at around lunch time the sun made an effort and I raced out for some air.

It was very windy but it was still enjoyable to have a look round, even if it wasn't for long. I was getting hungry!

Guess what, it's not raining, but is flat grey and really miserable.

As our Cape Daisy ~ Osteospermum had opened up I took it as my backup photo. As I doubt that the weather is going to improve I'm using it for today. I need something cheerful.

Lovely and sunny, but the wind is freezing cold, even going out into the garden isn't that much fun. So I had a look inside instead.

While I was filling my mug with water for a cup of tea I noticed that the dog food tin that had been soaking had bubbles on the top. Don't know why as although I'd put some washing up liquid in it last night it's not normally still bubbly in the morning.

I turned on the strip light and took some photos and this was the one I liked best.

Each Saturday-morning, we make our way to music school. It's an activity that takes up a large part of our Saturday. For much of the time, we adopt a principled, very stoic, attitude to our attendance, but there are other times, especially when we're all tired, that the temptation is to stay at home and just relax!

While all four children attend, the younger two finish a couple of hours earlier, leaving the eldest two to attend various other classes. What we do with these two hours is always a dilemma, but partly guided by what the weather is like outside. If it's dry, the three of us make our way to the local park, or to the shops nearby. Otherwise, especially in these winter-months, we opt to stay indoors!

Whichever decision made: we always, always purchase a bag of sweets! And when we do stay indoors: we hide in one of the music-rooms! They get to play their iPods; I get to play the piano...

under Congress Ave. bridge in Austin, TX

The Mexican Free-Tail Bats, that is. There are 1.5 million bats living under that bridge and they come out every evening after sunset. This is the trip I've been telling you about. I planned this trip for over a month. I check the cycles of the moon to make sure there would be a full moon rising, as the bat fly to the east when they come out. Well, everything was perfect, The moon came up right on time with very few clouds. I had a great lens, my batteries were charged and I was with my friend on a rented boat. The only problem was, unbeknownst to me, the bats have just had there young..So, they don't want to fly too far away and with all the rain we've had, there are plenty of bugs right there under the bridge.Oh well, I made the best of it. I got some great moon shots and skyline images, plus I was with friends and it was only 10 bucks each. I plan to do it again around the end of July or mid August. I just have to check the moon schedules again. I know there will be a full moon the end of July, but what's important is what time the moon comes up

For the past couple of years I've met up for a day out with a fellow Flickr architectural photographer doing the thing that we both really enjoy, photographing architecture. Joseph Pearson (I've linked to his photostream in the first comment box) and I spent a happy few hours walking around Bermondsey and Canary Wharf back in May. I hope that we can continue to have an annual meet up to shoot a few pictures and better yet, shoot the breeze over a coffee or two. These two buildings, both newer structures within the Canary Wharf estate, sit next to each other and make what I think is an interesting juxtaposition of architectural styles.
