Late Fall beaches here are usually gray and deserted. It is an excellent time for b&w photography to capture the mood. After all, autumn's color bursts are gone.
BANDELIER NATIONAL MONUMENT NEW MEXICO
Several of the excavated soft volcanic tuff wall dwellings can be viewed by the public using pine ladders similar to those constructed by the Ancestral Pueblo people. (Lacking metal screws!)
It has been a few years since I last visited the Hampshire village of East Meon which is surrounded by the South Downs National Park.
Like many picturesque villages it has a problem with parked cars and photographic opportunities can sometimes be limited. However, no such difficulty with this cottage which I notice has had a new thatched roof since last time - a very expensive outlay. As it is no longer a golden colour, it was probably done about 12 to 18 months ago.
Forge Cottage was built circa 1600 and was probably a small yeoman farmhouse. Presumably in the past it had some link with the village blacksmith hence the name but is now a private dwelling.

People who sleep walk needed to be wary-i've never heard archeologists suggest the Anastazi succumbed to falling deaths, but I suppose they've looked at the bottom of the cliff to see if there were piles of bones.
You need to have a local guide to access the valley floor and half a day or more to do it.

Located in Mesa Verde National Park Colorado this is the largest of the Anasazi Dwellings .Cliff Palace is the largest cliff dwelling at Mesa Verde National Park. It has 150 rooms, plus an additional 75 open areas. Twenty-one of the rooms are kivas, and 25 to 30 rooms have residential features. The number of Ancestral Puebloans living in Cliff Palace at any one time was 100 to 120.
It is seen with a tour guide from the park and quite informative at the incredible price of only three dollars!!
In the Winter of 1888, ranchers Richard Wetherill and Charlie Mason searched the canyons for stray cattle, they unexpectedly came upon Cliff Palace. The next year, the Wetherill brothers and Mason explored an additional 182 cliff dwellings.On June 29, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Mesa Verde National Park to "preserve the works of man," the first national park of its kind.What incredible fore site this man had saving this for one and all to further enjoy!An absolute "must see"to anyone who loves history and nature!!! It was great to learn about this brightly coloured and spotted juvenile stage of the eastern newt's life cycle.
The striking bright orange juvenile stage is land-dwelling and is known as a red eft.
This is specifically the red-spotted newt Notophthalmus viridescens viridescens sub-species.
Striking colouration of this stage is an example of aposematism, a warning to predators not to eat them.
After two to three years, the eft finds a pond and transforms into the aquatic adult.
Needing a moist environment with either a temporary or permanent body of water; sure enough, this specimen was seen on a forest floor close to small stream.

Clifton, Arizona, USA. Once a booming copper mining town but now mostly declining or already in decay and the majority of people and business have moved just up the road to Morenci. The Freeport McMoRan copper mine located in Morenci is one of the largest in the world
Cliff dwellings along the San Francisco and Gila Rivers are evidence of an advanced civilization that existed long before Caesar ruled Rome. Many specimens of pottery and stone implements are still to be found in these ancient dwelling places. In the mid-1500s, both Fray Marcos de Niza and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado passed through the area, following the San Pedro north to the Gila River. Geronimo was born in 1829 near the confluence of Eagle Creek and the San Francisco and Gila Rivers.
In 1856 the first mineral discoveries of the Morenci/Clifton area were found by California volunteers pursuing Apaches, and conflicts between the Apaches and advancing Anglo settlers touched off a 26-year-long war. Mining for gold and silver began in 1864, followed by copper in 1872, and the mine at Morenci quickly grew to become the largest copper producer in North America. Clifton's population ballooned from 600 in 1880 to 5000 by 1910, and it quickly earned its reputation as the wildest of the "Wild West" boomtowns. Neighboring Morenci was swallowed up by an open pit mine in the 1960s, but Clifton was preserved, and today Chase Creek Street is still graced with lovely Victorian-era buildings from the town's halcyon days as the place to quickly make and lose a fortune.
In 1983, Clifton survived two nearly fatal blows, first a nearly three-year-long strike that began on June 30, 1983. Then later that same year, on October 2, 1983, Tropical Storm Octave sent 90,900 cubic feet of water per second into the San Francisco River, which burst its banks, destroying 700 homes and heavily damaging 86 of the town's 126 businesse
Pueblo of Isleta is located in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, 13 miles (21 km) south of Albuquerque and was built on a knife-shaped reef of lava running across an ancient Rio Grande channel.

My dwelling isn't much nicer, just a crooked house in the woods, but I like it. I've been stuck in it all weekend though, working behind the computer. Tomorrow, Josie has a school conference, and that's the last time I have to drive into town all week. :D 8:36PM

I've read about cave dwelling but seeing it, touching it, climbing into the cave, it was a wonderful experience. Cave close-up!
The Ancestral Pueblo people lived here in Bandelier National Monument from approximately 1150 CE to 1550 CE. They built homes carved from the volcanic tuff. The Monument is 50 square miles (130 km2) of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains.

This is in a small hamlet.
I captured part of this while photographing the building next door last week. I had to return after seeing the pic.
The eye-catching features, IMO, are the ecletic window coverings, the fancy pink tile, the brick at the entrance which was apparently covered over elsewhere, the dormer with porch and the overall two-winged shape. Nice old wrought iron fence too.
It is a 6,600 square foot building and pigeon approved.
A coal pit or a dwelling hut for the insane? Who knows! I captured it on a visit to the open air museum Skansen a few days ago.
Old Orhei is now an Architectural and Cultural heritage site, preserving many traditional buildings such as this beautiful example. With the main dwelling to the left of the courtyard, the kitchen (and winter sleeping quarters) are built into the stone wall and hillside.
A significant part of the households in the reserve suffer from a lack of direct access to running water and electricity, due to the immensity and isolation of the desert territory.The overall standard of living is below the U.S. national average, marked by a high poverty rate and health facilities that are sometimes remote or energised.

This was number 108-118 Wentworth Dwellings on Goulston Street, which is where Jack The Ripper left the torn piece of apron belonging to Catherine Eddowes underneath the anti-Semitic graffito.
Eddowes was found murdered in Mitre Square by PC Edward Watkins around 1:45am on September 30th 1888, & the apron was found by PC Alfred Long in this entrance about an hour later.
