"De Kasbah", a striking complex of pile dwellings, Hengelo, the Netherlands.

Designed from the concept "Living as an urban roof" ("Wonen als stedelijk dak"). By building the houses on piles, room was created below as meeting place, parking, playing and common facilities. The building density achieved with this design is four times higher than in a normal residential area.
Bandelier National Monument is a 33,677-acre (136 km2) United States National Monument near Los Alamos in Sandoval and Los Alamos counties, New Mexico. The monument preserves the homes and territory of the Ancestral Puebloans of a later era in the Southwest. Most of the pueblo structures date to two eras, dating between AD 1150 and 1600.
The following recreated zulu dwelling is on display in the Ondini KwaZulu Cultural Museum, in Ulindi, near where Cetshwayo's one-time capital, Ondini, was destroyed.
The raised area at the back of the dwelling is known as the Usamo, and it is here that pots and utensils are stored. This is also the sacred area of the dwelling and it was beleived that the spirits of the ancestors lived here. In the centre of the dwelling the hearth is housed, and if occupied a fire would burn continuously. The smoke of the fire would raise up and pass through the thatched roof, serving not only to strengthen the thatch but keep the thatch clean of insects etc.
The women slept on the left and the man on the right. If the man felt like some nookie, he would wait for the kids to sleep and then tap his wife on the ankles with a long stick. His wife would dutifully cross over to his side, return to her side once the fun ends. (Whats happened to old time values?)

I almost always find the museum and gift shop buildings as (or more) photogenic than the cliff dwellings, especially given the backdrop against the Pike's Peak foothills and Manitou Springs area. Two stop, three image bracket, 10mm f/16 ISO100.
The frame is made of wood and the facades have wood shingle cladding. Two buildings with 22 dwellings in each building. Inaugurated: 2015. Architect: Tengbom.
Shadows cloak the rooms like a veil, whilst the sequence of open doors creates a tunnel leading towards an unknown, bleached by the light. It is an unsettling invitation: the past seems to watch from the gloom, leaving one to wonder who — or what — still inhabits these silent halls.
This is the doorway of the Wentworth Dwellings building on Goulston Street where Jack the Ripper left a torn piece of apron belonging to Catherine Eddowes. It was left underneath some anti-Semitic graffito that was erased before it could be photographed.
Eddowes was found murdered in Mitre Square by PC Edward Watkins on his beat at 1:45 am on September 30 1888. Goulston Street is east of Mitre Square, & the apron was found an hour later by PC Alfred Long on his beat.
Sir Charles Warren, head of the Metropolitan Police, ordered the graffito to be erased, as he was concerned about anti-Semitic violence if it was seen. There were tensions at the time with Anti-Semitism.
I took this on a really slow film just as an experiment. At the time, they couldn't photograph it as it was far too dark & needed it to get light. I was interested in seeing if I could get a shot of this spot with an incredibly slow film.
I used a yellow filter, & in Photoshop, edited it to be more reddish, influenced by Peter Deming's cinematography on From Hell.

Struan Cottage at Malacleit, North Uist, is probably the most photographed dwelling in the Outer Hebrides. I couldn't resist stopping to get a photograph as I passed by a few days ago, with the shallow water in the bay looking a typical, Hebridean turquoise under a cloudless sky.
This building on Goulston Street is where Jack The Ripper left his only clue on September 30 1888. The torn piece of apron from Catherine Eddowes was left in the doorway of the Happy Days Fish & Chips.
The apron was found underneath some anti-Semitic graffito, which was erased before it could be photographed, fearing anti-Jewish riots.
Sir Charles Warren, head of the Metropolitan Police who made that decision, was highly criticised for ordering it be erased, but I do think his views could be justified as there were anti-Semitic tensions in the area during the time the Ripper was terrorizing London. It must have been a difficult decision to make, & not something I don't think I could have done, so I don't attack him for it.

A two-story dwelling on the tropical island of Bohol, Philippines. The poorest of the poor make their own homes themselves out of basic, local materials. No plumbing and no electricity unless you can tap into the grid illegally on your own.
The ancient Anasazi people had an excellent understanding of solar cycles so if you've done any "ruin hunting" you know to scan the southeast facing walls the most. (Southeastern facing alcoves provide warmth in the winter, shade in the summer.)
This two-story dwelling is the perfect example of building to face the southeast. This is the final moments of sunlight on a late December afternoon providing heat for me (and Utah 🐶) and some night light for a few final shots before packing up for the hike out.
I'm starting to believe that there're not much interesting scapes left in my city. Should I buy a ticket to somewhere else ?
