Dating from 1870, this dwelling overlooked Gweedore bay in northwest County Donegal. It's astonishing that people were living in these as late as the 1870's. To the left (with window) the human inhabitants lived, to the right the livestock were housed with a gully separating the two living areas to drain the animal waste away. It can't have been very comfortable.
The ruins were inhabited by the Anasazi people 2000 years ago in the Canyon de Chelly, northeast Arizona. They mysteriously left the canyon that was subsequently inhabited by the Navajo.
Harlow E. Bundy House, also known as the Bundy Museum of History and Art, is a historic home located at Binghamton, Broome County, New York. It was built in 1893, and is a 2 1/2-story, irregularly massed, Queen Anne style frame dwelling. It features cut stone veneer, a variety of decorative shingles, and a tall conical corner tower. It was built by Binghamton businessman Harlow Bundy (1856-1914), who owned the Bundy Manufacturing Company, a predecessor of IBM.
Nearly every trip there's a contender for best/most unusual campsite. Here's the most unusual from this trip.
Looking for shelter from an extremely aggressive wind, we camped in an alcove in a huge redrock fin. It was almost dead quiet in there, even when the rains blew through. Next time we get that spot I'm digging a little kiva...

Summer 2014 1st leg: "Many Rivers"
June 18: Moab, mostly.
Such an amazing place . . . from which to consider these far different lives, their remarkably distant experience . . . . Walnut Canyon near Flagstaff, Ariz., holds the ruins of about 80 small cliff dwellings constructed by prehistoric Sinagua peoples between the 12th and 13th century. The canyon also offers a closer look at some of the same rock formations found only in the Grand Canyon.
While walking the Petroglyph Point Trail and a view looking to the southeast to the Spruce Tree House and cliff dwelling. This is located in Mesa Verde National Park. With this image, I zoomed in with the focal length so that I could have the cliff dwellings fill the image center from side to side. There would be some foreground interest with the nearby tree vegetation, and then the cliffs above would be framing for the upper portion of the image.

Dwelling Places III (18)
to burn it all is a much simpler
process. I cover my head with ashes
(not stars) as if in warning.
Here we are at the end
of the world! It’s a sizeable wall, a monument
to ancient wisdom,
and it runs inside us! Meanwhile we pour
ourselves out in all directions, and I know I’m forgetting
the essential thing, that vial of perfume
at day’s end (or was it at night?) when
hands still made us close,
fire was an easy word,
and in us light alone lived.

The frame is made of wood and the facades have wood shingle cladding. Two buildings with 22 dwellings in each building. Inaugurated: 2015. Architect: Tengbom.
Built in a protective rock alcove on a steep saguaro-covered mountainside, the lower Tonto ruins are a reminder of the native Salado culture that lived in the Tonto Basin 700 years ago.

Now named Turner Court it was built in 1862 for a charity called Society for Improving the Condition of the Labouring Classes, It is located on the corner of Midland Street and St Lukes Street just a stones throw from Hulls Railway Station.
The Lake Dwellings of the Stone and Bronze Age (4.000 to 850 BC) are reawakening at Lake Constance (Bodensee) in Unteruhldingen, Germany.
Avarua... Capitol of the Cook Islands on the island of Rarotonga... The rain only paused for a few minutes during the three or four hours we were there, but it didn't really matter. However, by the time we'd ambled from one end of the "town" to the other (which took all of about 5 minutes), had had lunch, had some quiet time in the island's Catholic Cathedral, explored a souvenir shop (which was a bit expensive) and the local supermarket (whose prices were mostly on a par with New Zealand prices!), it was time to catch the bus back to our Resort...
We had arrived on the anti-clockwise bus, but decided to return to our Resort the way we'd come (We'd be able to see more of the island than had we gone the other way!) and this time, we were fortunate: although the rain was still falling heavily and the windows were open, the rain was beating against the other side of the bus, so our side remained dry - and sooo cool.
And with the window open, it was a good opportunity to take some photos of local dwellings (above) as the bus careered along the narrow highway only a little more sedately than we'd experienced earlier! (But at least the wipers worked, and the door remained shut!).
In due course, the bus turned into our Resort, we disembarked, and it roared off down the driveway to continue its journey back to Avarua...
But...
As we approached our Room, I reached into my pocket for the swipe card key that was in my wallet, only to find that... (oh oh): it (the wallet) was still on the bus...!!!
A quick trip to Reception, who made a quick phone call to the bus depot, who made a quick call to their driver, and the bus (apparently) came to a shuddering halt on the side of the road, the driver ran down the aisle to where we'd been sitting, and: Rescue Mission completed!
A big Thank You to the Edgewater Resort's Receptionist, the Cook's Island bus company, and especially to their extremely cordial and very helpful driver (above)...! And after all that stress (and even though it was still raining), it was time to enjoy a "Mocktail" in the Resort's picturesque gardens looking out over the lagoon...! Well, you know: someone had to do it...!

1. Imitation banana frond roofs protected the tables from either inclement weather or the hot sun...!
2. Whilst Avarua is the capitol of Rarotonga and the Cook Islands, do keep in mind that it's only the size of a very, very small New Zealand suburban shopping centre!).

A long abandoned dwelling on the Somerset Levels. Perfect country residence once water, electricity and drainage is established. However, it probably regularly floods and perhaps would best be suited on higher ground!
The Cliff Dwellings of Manitou Springs. These were stolen from other cliff house sites and conjoined into this mishmash for a tourist attraction. These structures are from different places and cultures. Still, it's interesting enough to visit.
