"NO DUMPING"

In May of 1962, a fire was started in the town landfill, next to the Odd Fellows Cemetary in order to clean up the area before a Memorial Day Celebration.

This fire was authorized by the town council, and was ignited by members of the local Volunteer Fire Department. All of the trash was piled up in a corner of the landfill and ignited. After the fire had burned most of the trash, it was extinguished. Oddly, though, it kept re-igniting itself as the weeks passed.

What the members of the town did not realise was that there was an un-sealed abandoned coal mine shaft beneath the pile. The trash fire ignited a coal seam beneath the earth, and continues burning to this day.

Beneath Centralia and surrounding areas lies a rich deposite of anthracite coal; very hard and compact, which burns slowly at a high temperature. Since the initial fire in 1962, the underground mine fires have spread some 400 acres, forcing the evacuation of homes in Centralia.

At its peak, Centralia had more than 2,000 residents. The Borough of Centralia had, at one point, "seven churches, five hotels, twenty-seven saloons, two theaters, a bank, and a post office, fourteen general stores, and a post office".

In 1984, Congress allocated approximately $42 million for relocation of Centralia's residents. Most took the offer and moved to surrounding areas.

According to the 2004 census, there were only 18 people still remaining in Centralia.

All that is left today is a few lone homes, civic buildings, and barren roads which lead into empty feilds.

Seeing bulldozers on hills of trash makes me sorry for all the things I've thrown out.

Amazing how such varied junk is just buried under dirt at the landfill every day. Couches, bathtubs, concrete, mattresses, old tires, wood, ... It all just gets buried by huge Caterpillar equipment.

There are extra security measures in place for this week's international nuclear summit. Among them: A fence surrounds the perimeter of the convention center. Here, at Ninth Street and K Street, dump trucks seem to reinforce that barrier.

Dumped unceremoniously across Lytham jetty by the ebbing tide!

You can see the new valves are slightly taller than the original units. Thankfully they still fit ( only just ) so no modifications are required.

Seen at the local garbage dump. This song came to mind...

"I'll be a killer whale,

when I grow up, I'll be a vulture

I’ll be an animal, A carnivore,

I’ll be a monster

Clenching my jagged jaws

Over the captured

I’ll be a killer whale when I grow up.

I’ll be a tidal wave when I grow up

Crashing on harbors

I’ll be a temperamental element

A raging water

I’ll be a perfect storm swallowing over

I’ll be a killer whale

When I grow up, I’ll be a monster

I’ll be a hurricane when I grow up

An ugly thunder

I’ll be a forest fire about to flood

Over an empire

I’ll be an avalanche chewing it's raptured

I'll be a killer whale

When I grow up I’ll be a MONSTER

I’ll be a killer whale

A frequent guest in dump ecology. And nettles, a steady inhabitant on dump grounds. Over time dump grounds are very species rich in terms of vascular plants. BUT there is, of course no future in it. Total dead end.

I like this angle. I think the cab windows came out perfect!

On the outskirts of the Thai town Mae Sot and just a few kilometers from the Burmese border, several Burmese refugees make a living out of picking recyclables out of the dump and selling them. Many of these refugees are families with small children who work alongside their parents- some without shoes or even pants. Some of these families even opt for living and sleeping directly on the dump itself in makeshift tent like “homes”.

Most of Fresno is strewn with litter, but in West Fresno, illegal dumping is ridiculously out of hand. Even along the fantastically landscaped and architecturally grand Kearney Blvd, there are piles of trash everywhere.

Bread and Butter Stream Cleanup 11/5/16: We have perfect weather to work with over 50 volunteers as we completely filled 5 dump trucks with trash and debris we removed from the stream and the surrounding fields behind the shopping centers!!! This included 185 bags of trash, 26 boxes of rotting food from behind Sava-A-Lot Grocery Store (in the field next to J.D. Byriders Fence), a huge file of trash in the middle of the field, 5 couches, 4 shopping carts, 4 broken mirrors, 2 dressers, 2 headboards, 2 mattresses, and much more but best of all – we even caught someone dumping in the stream not 15 minutes after we completed our cleanup! We did call the police on this individual and they gave him a $1,500 fine!!!Thank you everyone so very much for all your incredible hard work under such tough conditions! Our volunteer’s dedication of working toward a cleaner, greener, healthier community and environment is without equal! Thank to everyone who volunteered with us today.

We would also like to thank the Ocean Conservancy, American Rivers, National Public Lands Day and Trash Free Maryland for all their assistance and support on this cleanup. We also wish to thank Entenmann’s Bakery Outlet for donating donuts, Tradepoint Atlantic and Walmart for your generous donations allowing is to purchase much needed supplies! We would also like to thank Towson University Women’s Soccer and the community for all the incredible volunteers they supplied! Thank you also to Baltimore County Highways for supplying us 5 dump trucks and a backhoe when their roll off dumpster truck broke down this morning!!! Their help was invaluable with all the furniture we removed!

Dump the Pump, in front of Gateway Building

7 September 2017. This spot at the southern end of Moorefield Road is often used for dumping bags of rubbish.

Moorefield Road isn't a main road. But it's where many people go to visit our local Royal Mail Sorting Office. Many more take their kids to the nearby primary school. Or walk to and from Bruce Grove overground railway station.

Some use the small local businesses. Or visit the North London Community House.

As you turn into these streets, does your heart sing or sink? Is there ever a time when there is no fly-tipping? Other than the few hours (minutes?) after each clear-up.

On 7 September credit to the street cleaners for a day (or at least a few hours?) without dumping.
