After locking up I realized the serial on the side of the frame and a quick search told me the exact make and model of my new bike! (as old as me would you believe it!)
As much as I try to convince myself that flatbars can work with the right grips and a bit of further provisions like the right innerbar ends and as much as I like my full suspension bike — taking my lovely Canyon Exceed for a (super cold) spin yesterday was an instant eye opener again. After 2 weeks or so exclusively on my flat bar full sus or on the smart trainer the Exceed instantly felt sooo good again! It’s not just the drop bars - although they provide a great deal of familiarity and comfort not only in terms of hands but the whole position on the bike. It’s the whole geometry which makes for such a capable yet still responsive and natural feeling steering without any wheel flop.
Seriously - it’s geometry and handling really is a home run for fast overland XC, marathon and bikepacking as far as I am concerned. Unfortunately, XC mountain bikes are rapidly moving away from it towards trail riding geos (you nearly can’t even call them down country anymore) and gravel bikes are not there yet. Not that all gravel bikes should - but some.
Also after quite some kilometers with the new Sram Red AXS brifters and brakes I’m totally sold. They are no magic bullets in terms of removing all pain points with hydraulic brakes and caliber or rotor misalignments, minuscule tolerances etc. But they improved on every aspect and even with my not that big hands I really like the hood shape. And the braking power is much welcome.

This version of Trek's urban bike is for the Japan market. Note the dropbar, flip-flop hub, wide pedals.
Combined of two shots... It was very, very cold yesterday - about -15°C... So, I didn't really have the patience for the one and only pictorial design... But this result works more than fine for me.
3rd cockpit configuration so far... after using dropped North Road bars and risers, both w/Nitto Technomic stems and cork grips + a VO vintage repro brake lever.

My Bike for Badlands!
It’s of course my lovely Dropbar Exceed. A build I did last Winter on the base of a Canyon Exceed XC Race Hardtail. Converted it to drop bars, equipped a hybrid „Sramimano“ group consisting of Shimano crank set, chain and cassette (36 x 10-51), Sram Eagle AXS GX RD and Rival brifters and brakes. A RockShox SID SL Ultimate provides just the right amount of squish and bling at the front while being utmost light and avoiding cable mess via the lockout lever (I’ll want to use very rarely anyways) on the crown. Tires are Continental RaceKing ProTection 29 x 2,2 on Newmen wheels. For Badlands I decided to go without a dynamo hub and will use just a Lupine Neo as main light. Profile Design aerobars on a Neosonic Bracket complete my cockpit.
You know I’m a big fan of the Tailfin Aeropack so I’ll use it on this bike also. On the top tube I have the middle sized flip-top Top Tube Pack from Tailfin. Below my aerobars I use the cyclite Handle Bar Aero Bag and I accompany it with one of their new super minimalistic food pouches. Hydration and a bit more place for food will be covered by a Camelbak Chase Vest. For below the down tube I’m still pondering whether just strap a bottle cage or my 1.7L Tailfin Downtube Pack on.

GT Gutterball Rahmen im Traum-Set-up lightgepainted (sozusagen).

Upgraded parts of my 2nd hand 2021 Giant Revolt 2. Swapped out the stock 42mm Giant dropbars with a preloved 44mm Salsa Cowchipper and then the Tektro mechanical brake calipers with a Ferrino mechanical actuated hydraulic brake caliper also changed the saddle from the stock Giant to the Ergon Enduro . Made a world of difference in the bike!
Lightpainting, die Zweite... Hier habe ich mal versucht einige Tipps aufzunehmen (Huch, wo ist der Kübel?) und dabei rausgekommen ist das hier.
Lightpainting, take two... now with an invisible kickstand ;)

The biggest grin on my face with and on this bike!
I say it time and time again: this bike is so. much. fun! For me it’s the perfect geometry. Fun on every (g)road, piste and trail.
And those new wheels? Just adding to it. Really fonds so far on the first ride with them.
I received quite a lot of praise and questions on the bike, on the drop bars, on suspension with drop bars and the wheels etc. over the last days. So if you are new around here I invite you to have a look at my blog where I have a full 5 part article series on everything:
- why this is the Gravelbike of the year 2025 (as conceived in 2022)
- why gravel is more and more MTB off-road anyways
- everything on steering and flatbar vs dropbar and what to consider
- all the groups and brake options you could choose from for your conversion or even upgrade of any gravel bike
- a 1x1 on drive trains: chainring size, chainline and q-factor
- and finally in part 5: my specific build, parts list and the final result (as of Dec 2022)
Find all this and more on my blog where I often publish articles on all things gravel and mtb bikes, bikepacking races and gear and all around musings and bike nerdery. Often parallel published in English and German. But mostly in German. As with the aforementioned series on Dropbar Mountain Bikes or, as I like to call them: SuperGravel Bikes.
But you can readily use the translation service of your choice. Link: torstenfrank.wordpress.com/2023/03/26/dropbar-mtb-teil-1-...

It took me 3 hours watching videos on Youtube, studying photos of other people's efforts & multiple dry-runs to install the handlebar tape!
It's still a little messy in places, but I'm pretty pleased with the result.
Spent the day modifying Alfine 11 rapid fire shifters to fit standard drop bars.
Originally the Alfine 11 shifters only fit MTB style bars with an OD of 22.1mm.
I enlarged the bar mounting opening up to 23.8mm to fit standard drop bars as shown above.
Just experimenting as I plan to rebuild by mid 80's Specialized Sequoia up with my new Alfine 11 Speed Internal Gear Hub.
Fork steerer is a little tall, but I'm going to get comfy before I choppity chop chop.
Yes, this is a fixie only frame since there are no brake mounts on it at all. There is a disc brake mount on the fork though.

This was a special project custom made for a girl. We needed a small sized frame, steel, no lugs, horizontal dropouts or track ends, etc... pretty hard to find though ...
After spending a lot of time searching for such a frame we decided for a Sunn road frame and fork from the '90s, in XS size (47cm seat-tube) to which we changed the dropouts for track ends.
We went with a baby-blue / white paint theme and use silver polished components.
We also put some time in finding the right wheelset for this build. White Veltec rims, 24 holes drilling, flip-flop rear hub, Miche front... all at only 1546 gram (not really bad for a fixie / singlespeed wheelset )
3rd of October, celebrating the Day of German Unity by exploring more tiles and enjoying the wide areas of forest in my beloved Wittgenstein. Of course on my beloved Dropbar converted Canyon Exceed.
Grey skies today and real chill air. Here’s hope for some golden October days and bright autumn colours still to come.
