Nem tem muito oque explicar sobre dreadlocks... realmente sĂł quem tem sabe....

Dreadlocks de colores.

Seen at a Manchester City Football Club event - hence all the blue shirts.

It took place in Albert Square and it was to introduce the manager Sven-Goran Eriksson and the new team to the city (as opposed to the City!) after the takeover by Thaksin Shinawatra. This certainly led to a new beginning and resurgence in the Club's fortunes which meant that on the weekend of 22nd May 2011 City finished in the top three of the Premier League, with automatic qualification to the main bit (probably not the correct wording) of the European Champions League for 2011/12. There has since been an open top bus event in Albert Square to celebrate the team winning the 2011 FA Cup. And now City have won the Barclays Premiership in 2012. Deja vu? And now FA Cup Finalists against Wigan Athletic in 2013

Well done to everyone at the Club.

On 12/1/2010 this was 21st out of 7,000,000+ on Google Images for a search for "multi colored". In October 2010 it had moved to 12th out of about 4,000,000 - and via Flickriver not Flickr. Not sure why..................

Update 10/1/11 - now back showing as Flickr and 14th out of about 5480000 images and 13/3/11 12th out of 15,500,000 - it's all very mysterious. I think this depends to some degree where you are located and which browser you are using as it seems to be different on Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. On 25th March 2011 Flickr Stats showed it as 3rd on a search for best dreadlocks in the world but for some reason it was only on page 5 of The best dreadlocks in the world. As at October 2011 the photo was getting hardly any new views via Google Images having slipped dramatically down the "multi colored" rankings.

I'm also mystified about how a photo gets it interestingness status, although I've read what Flickr says. The "most interesting" dreadlocks shot on Flickr has about the same number of comments and faves but about half the views as this one, but I'm pleased you stopped by to look.

Candid Street Photography From Blackpool, England

Twenty three years.

That is how long ago since my most recent stranger, John, has cut his hair. One must also presume that twenty three years is about the time it takes for an adult man to grow his hair down to his ankles. Needless to say, the moment I spotted John meandering through the crowd, I knew that I desired to include his portrait in my project. Once I approached John, he addressed me in a kind and gentle way, and he was more than happy to pose for a portrait. I have to imagine that this was far from the first time that he has been asked to be photographed by strangers on the street.

Getting John’s consent was the easy part. The big challenge of this portrait was compositional in nature.

First and foremost, featuring John’s incredibly long dreadlocks in the shot was an imperative, so a standard head & shoulders portrait was not going to suffice. I find that full or three quarter length body shots are particularly challenging because composing the added elements usually makes for a greater complexity. One thing I knew I had going for me was the lighting where we were located. It was late afternoon and the sun was partially filtered by hazy clouds. I quickly surmised that this semi-soft directional lighting was going to provide me my best option. That said, by this time of day, most my immediate surroundings were enveloped in dark shadows hence I had a very finite area in which I could use this light. Making my search for an area in which to make this picture even more difficult was the fact that the location where John and I had met was very crowded with people and the physical surroundings were cluttered and generally unappealing. My first glance around did not reveal any obvious choices for a clean background.

My mind was a bit scrambled as I considered my options, but I finally chose as my backdrop a nearby shipping container that had been converted into a mobile office. Although it was less than ideal because there were several distracting elements on the façade of the structure (I positioned John to block out some of that), the big box at least offered a way to produce an image without throngs of people populating the background. Once John was posed, I began to compose the shot through my viewfinder with the purpose of capturing as much of John’s body as I could. However my initial perspective was problematic because I realized the roofline edge of the structure was going directly through John’s head…clearly an undesirable feature. After I repositioned a couple of times without discovering an acceptable POV, I switched gears and made the decision to drop to one knee and shoot upward using the sky to frame his head. I was initially a little wary of going with such an extreme perspective, but my concerns quickly dissipated once I peered into the viewfinder. I liked what I saw; along with John’s long dreads his clothes and bling all added up to what I thought was a fairly impactful image. Once I started shooting, John purposefully offered me a this far away gaze, a look that I felt was effective. And so I finally had my portrait. This image reminded me of a jigsaw puzzle…it took a little consideration figuring out how to fit all of the pieces, but in the end I was pleased with this portrait I had put together.

Warping the previous image. The young woman who manages the shop came out to find out why I was photographing her window and put me through to the owner of the salon. I explained that I had merely been captivated by the beautiful drawing and we parted amicably

Whitne is 100% natural and shaves no body hair. I really liked her world views and her caring for the poorer in the world. Normally I trade photos and files for the models time but with her I made a generous contribution to her food kitchen.

She brought a friend along as chaperone. His name is William and he is a street entertainer at Mallory Square in Key West. He was interested in a particular car that I coincidentally had sitting under the barn back in Pennsylvania. That adventure is next!

A couple of musicians playing on a street corner near one of the downtown markets. The little girl was fascinated by them. I was too. They were REALLY good!

Now can someone tell me how you take care of dreadlocks? And what do you do when you finally decide you no longer want them? :-))
