A warm humid night. I had the telescope dew-heaters on a higher setting than usual. The sky lacked transparency, but was nice and stable. At first, balancing the temperature of the telescope against the increasing dew was a bit of a challenge (tube currents were a killer), but after that Mars did not disappoint. The highlight was that Olympus Mons could be made out in the 4-inch refractor. This was the first time I had seen this mega-volcano proper (not just the clouds over it) with a telescope under 6-inches.

Lunchtime life drawing session at work. 10 minutes, done with zen brush app on iPad (using a 1 pixel brush). I like the way the pen bleeds when i stop moving the stylus - it has a bit of a felt marker feel.

Happy Valentine's Day, Love. This drawing is my Valentine's Day gift for my wife. Years ago I drew a picture for my wife for Valentine's Day. This last summer it was damaged accidentally. This is its replacement. My drawing skills have improved since then and this is an image I would like to hang in my house. In my search for an image and subject, I considered many famous lovers. Romeo and Juliet? Too high school. Anthony and Cleopatra? Too egyptian. Tristan and Isolde? They were in love due to love potion. Acme and Septimus were represented numerous times as an example of ideal devotion. This image is one of two lovers and friends holding hands and talking. This was the right image for us. I combined the image with an Art Nouveau border.
Mr. J.C. Roth taught high school physics at Uni High -- USDHS -- University of San Diego High School. I have no idea what years he taught there, but he was a great teacher who I totally underappreciated.
