Talk about a day of contrasts! One minute its bright, next minute its chucking it down. Some quite spectacular lighting created by this bright interval even as the heavy rain falls.
Hi I met Esmee as part of this project recently at Hyde Park as she was walking to Art Gallery. She is hailed from Holland and came to Australia for her studies. We talked about her life, upbringing, likes and dislikes, work etc. It was long fun encounter where I tried different aspects as composition background.

I really thought a reddish background against the reddish outfit would be a mistake. Well, with processing in Lightroom, the colors blend quite well.
On Koh Rong Island, Cambodia, moments before a tropical storm arrives, the atmosphere shifts. The sky darkens with heavy clouds, the wind picks up, and the sea grows restless. Brightly painted boats docked near a wooden pier seem to pause, waiting. A stilted structure—part restaurant, part shelter—stands above the water, its red chairs still empty. The contrast between the vibrant colors and the looming sky captures the tension of coastal life on the edge of weather.
Sur l’île de Koh Rong, au Cambodge, juste avant l’arrivée d’un orage tropical, l’atmosphère change. Le ciel s’assombrit sous des nuages lourds, le vent se lève, et la mer devient agitée. Les bateaux colorés amarrés près d’un ponton en bois semblent suspendus dans l’attente. Une structure sur pilotis—à la fois restaurant et abri—surplombe l’eau, ses chaises rouges encore vides. Le contraste entre les couleurs vives et le ciel menaçant reflète la tension de la vie côtière face aux éléments.

I saw this flower outside the photo arts building in Balboa Park in San Diego, so I picked it, and brought it home to exploit. I'm told that it is a Cup Of Gold (Solandra maxima).
I lit it with a SB600 in a snoot to illuminate the flower parts that look as if they're blowing in the wind and two softboxes with strobes to take care of the overall lighting. The snoot was positioned camera left at about 8 o'clock, one softbox was at camera left at 11 o'clock and the other at camera right at 5 o'clock. I set the strobes on manual power and adjusted until I got the look that I wanted. The strobes were triggered by the pop up flash on my D90 in commander mode.

A particularly vivid rainbow made more dramatic by a dark sky background drops onto East Shaws Farm. Westwick. Teesdale

This is a the view we had when we woke up on the roof of a hotel in Seef in the Wadi Dawan. The Wadi Dawan is located roughly halfay between Sayun and Al Mukhla on the coast.

I caught a 5:30 AM flight from Seattle to Houston. I was feeling sorry for myself because I had to be at SeaTac at 4:30 for the 5:30 flight. That meant I had to leave Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island at 2:30 AM. Of course, that meant no sleep the night before.
It was eerie driving across Deception Pass at that hour - no cars and a wispy ground fog filling the valleys. I really started to enjoy the drive. It was so different in the dark and at that very early hour. Getting through Seattle was easy and that was a pleasant change.
The first gray light of dawn happened sometime while I was going through security. Another nice surprise - security was not a problem, no lines and pleasant exchanges.
I watched the dim gray light slowly brighten while I sat at the gate. I could see a light ground fog drifting over the airport as dawn intensified. The sky changed from black to deep ink blue.
We boarded and taxied to the end of the runway, again, without any delay. As the colors of the day started to appear, I could tell there was a high cirrus layer but it looked clear above the lacey ground fog.
With a roar, we were hurtling down the runway. By now, I could see lights blinking on in the homes - Seattle was waking up. We took off to the North and were soon banking to the right to turn back to the Southeast.
As we climbed, I could see the orange of the sun begin to near the rapidly dropping horizon. I looked to the right and Mount Rainier was quickly approaching as we accelerated to the Southeast. I grabbed my camera bag from under the seat and as soon as I pulled my camera out and looked through the viewfinder, the first direct rays from the sun flooded across western Washington and spot-lighted Rainier.
I was mesmerized. It somehow felt primitive, like I was witnessing the first light to ever fall on Rainier.
It is funny, I will always treasure and never forget that early morning that I was dreading. I doubt that I will ever learn...

The briefest of bright intervals highlights autumn tints starting to form on the riverbanks in this view of the River Tees, looking upstream from Demesnes Mill at Barnard Castle, Teesdale under a menacing dark sky.

The lingering light from a beautiful sunset in the Sierra foothills a couple of weeks ago. I MUCH prefer little m's shot of this tree and sunset, which included a lot more of this huge oak in the frame.

This photo was shot along the river side, a boat has just past and these are the wave splashing on the land and rocks.
Inside the Rundetårn (Round Tower) in Copenhagen, which I was climbing to get a nice overview image of the city from on high. This is a 17th-century tower built as an astronomical observatory in central Copenhagen. What you are seeing here is part of an "equestrian staircase" or corridor leading to the top, which has 7 1/2 turns. Frankly, it was a blast to climb. The top affords an awesome 360 degree view of the city!

Manakha is located in the Haraz mountains, 85 kms (a good 2-hour drive) from Sana'a. It is located at 2300 meters above sea. As far as you can see there's mountains, smaller ones, bigger ones, and about 90 percent of these mountains are covered with terraces for agriculture. Not all of them are used anymore, because lots of locals have moved to the capital and there's just not enough people left to work all the fields. On every hilltop or big rock a town was built, for protection against enemies in the past, incredible constructions, it is mind-boggling how they managed to build them all ... and then : the fields and hillsides are so green, it seems unreal, as if it was painted on.
This photo was taken during sunset and I was rather lucky to get some clouds as the sky in Yemen tends to be just blue and blue.

As the sky starts to clear a patch of strong sunshine lights up a snow covered Stang against a dark sky background.

As with the preceding photo, the nature of the sunlight here is what makes this image interesting. Driving home from West Virginia on a cloudy, sometimes rainy day in August, a break in the cloud cover let sunlight through in rather dramatic fashion. Fortunately, I was soon able to pull over at the top of the twisty mountain grade, just a short distance from the Virginia line. I've seen similar light before, but not quite as nice, and not when I could get photos.
