Incredibly picturesque sky and dramatic clouds in the morning, colored by the intense red of the rising sun.

It has been a dramatic night and day in the central part of Italy where a big quake destroyed villages and buildings killing hundreds of people. It is difficult to stay here feeling impotent and useless...A prayer for all the victims and the populations involved in this disaster

Dramatic Daybreak:
The shot was taken in July 2007 at Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, at just after half five in the morning (ouch!). I had arrived the night before and hadn’t had time to check the tide times so I was initially disappointed to see the tide right in when I got to the beach. I decided to set up my tripod on the sea front steps at water level to see what I could get. The sun was already up so I had missed the actual sunrise itself (making a mental note to set the alarm that little bit earlier!). I put a polarising filter on the lens to saturate the blue sky which was just visible through the nicely contrasting white clouds. I then added a 0.8 ND Grad filter to balance the contrast between the sky and sea. The sun was just catching the clouds at the back so I had to be careful not to blow out the highlights. I tried to time the waves so they were just on the way in to get some movement in the water, between getting a shoe full of water each time!
This image is about half way through a series taken over about an hour and a half. I finished the shoot at about half six, a little colder, a little damper but back in the warm in time for coffee and toast and satisfied that I had managed to get something worthwhile from what started off looking like I could have drawn a blank.
Processing: I opened the RAW file in Photoshop and processed once for the highlights of the sun on the clouds and once for the main image and then merged them together. I dodged & burned the clouds slightly to accentuate the differences in contrast and tightened the histogram. There is minimal sharpening to give a bit of definition.
Image details: Taken in RAW. Canon EOS 30D, 0.6 seconds shutter speed, Manual Setting, f/18, ISO 100, 17mm Focal length on a EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM Canon lens.

It was a fairly dramatic burn as the sun set through layers of low clouds. It was also high tide day with dramatic waves rushing through the sea stack to create a powerful pattern.
A short video of some of my more dramatic photos. The music is a track I wrote and recorded for Getty Music. Listen on Spotify here -
A dramatic black and white street photograph capturing a family of three crossing through a striking beam of sunlight in St Peter's Square, Manchester. The parents and their young child move from deep shadow into brilliant illumination, creating a powerful visual metaphor for transition and movement through urban space. The harsh contrast between the dark shadows and the bright sunbeam transforms this everyday moment into something cinematic and profound. The geometric interplay of light and shadow across the square's paving creates a natural stage for this intimate family scene amidst the bustling city center.
It was a rainy day, we walked for hours to get to Baile's Lighthouse under the rain and then we just found "No Entry" warning everywhere, so we couldn't get pictures there... luckily, on our way back we found this nice lighthouse in Howth Harbour, and also the rain stopped falling, showing us this nice sky!
3 different exposure merged and tonemapped.
Trying one of those dramatic poses to change things up a little.
I wasn't to keen on this set when I did them but now I've had a little time to look through them I've found a few good ones that aren't to dark or can be salvaged with a light adjustment.
this is a lovely dress full of chiffon folds and sparkly bits and bobs! Still can't get enough of big dresses I am afraid addicted to them.
Mammatus clouds captured over my head.

Painting is an illusion, a piece of magic, so what you see is not what you see
This is an image I took last year while on a photo trip on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. The rock you see on the right is known locally as the honeycomb and when lit by the sun it offers a beautiful sight with the Cuillin range as a backdrop. This image was sitting on my hard drive since the actual honeycomb was a little overexposed and I just wasn't able to get a final image that pleased me, but I think my processing skills have improved since and I'm happier with the results I'm getting now.
