Katya [NAME CHANGED], 19, right, stands with her friend Olya [NAME CHANGE], background, at the shelter for women with addiction problems managed by Asteria, a local NGO, in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Katya is recovering for heroine addiction and is currently on Methadone treatment.

Sharing her story, Katya said,

“I don’t have any siblings or parents. They died. I have relatives, but not here. I am not in touch with them.”

“I have been smoking since quite a while. For drugs, I started using marijuana first then hashish and eventually heroine. I only used it once and I was hooked. Could not do without it. It started showing affects fairly soon, my friends became very concerned and warned me. They knew what it will do to me. My friend Olya, who is also at the same shelter now, told me about Asteria, so I came here for help. I have been here for almost one month, just few more days left before my contract with Asteria expires. I will have to find a new place to live and a job soon, so I can pay for it. Asteria allows one to stay only one month. There are other women who needs this place as much as I do, so it is only fair. I want to reduce my Methadone dosage, but not now. I am not ready for it yet.”

Asteria was formed by four women who met each other in a drug rehabilitation facility. They realized that there is a need for a community based organization specifically designed for women with drug addiction that provides them a shelter which allows them space to deal with their immediate concerns and time to prepare for their future challenges.

Specialist equipment seized and arrests made following counterfeit drugs manufacturing crackdown

Image removed by sender. Specialist equipment seized and arrests made following counterfeit drugs manufacturing crackdown.

Four arrests have been made and specialist manufacturing equipment suspected to make millions of pounds worth of counterfeit prescription drugs has been seized following dawn raids in the region this morning (17 May 2022).

A total of nine addresses were raided by officers in Salford and Wigan as part of a crackdown on the illegal supply and manufacturing of counterfeit prescription drugs where two sophisticated labs, believed to be where Diazepam pills are being made, were discovered. It’s estimated that both labs, on Albion Street in Salford and Lower Green Lane in Wigan, may have been making thousands of tablets an hour.

The operation, led by GMP’s Serious and Organised Crime Group (SOCG), was part of Greater Manchester Police’s commitment to taking drugs off the streets under Operation Cranium, a multi-agency response to prescription drugs and the sale of counterfeit medication mainly being sold around the Cheetham Hill area. Following proactive policing such as warrants, dedicated patrols and intelligence gathering, along with work alongside partners such as harm reduction visits to premises to offer advice and work with users and professionals to help those in need, the area has seen a drop in reported incidents and today’s raids are another huge step in finding those responsible for their supply and manufacturing.

Following warrants at a number of addresses, four men, aged 42 to 77, were all arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply class C drugs. A 42-year-old was also further arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Around £20,000 in cash and assets including Rolex and Omega watches worth approximately £30,000 were seized, along with three firearms and ammunition taken from an address on Lower Green Lane in Astley, are awaiting further testing to see if they are viable.

Today’s action follows a seizure of over 2.6 million Benzodiazepine tablets on 1 April on the M61 motorway near Rivington Services where a man was arrested and charged with possession with intent to supply a controlled drug of Class C. Ehsan Ahamath, 12/04/1990, of Langley Road, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, is due to appear at Bolton Crown Court on 19 September 22.

Detective Chief Inspector Jim Faulkner, from GMP’s SOCG, said: “Misuse of prescription drugs can lead to fatal consequences and there have already been several cases where people have become seriously ill or died as a result of acquiring them illegally.

“Illegal drugs and their distribution can not only blight communities, but can also pose a real harm and risk to both those in the community and those using and taking them. We regularly work with partners including Public Health England and the Greater Manchester Drugs Early Warning System which monitors new and emerging drugs that pose a real threat.

“We will not hesitate in taking action on those involved and today is a strong example of this whereby we’ve wiped out a clearly sophisticated set up and hopefully saved lives as a result. Today’s warrants are another huge step in our crackdown and it doesn’t stop here.”

Parts and mechanical items from inside the suspected labs are currently in the process of being dismantled and investigated.

DCI Faulkner added: “I can’t emphasise enough the dangers of taking these drugs without a relevant prescription and dosage guidance from a healthcare professional. Illicit supplies of prescription drugs may be counterfeit or adulterated and anyone purchasing such drugs cannot be sure of their origin or what they may have been mixed with. Packages may also contain incorrect dosage information.

“Our best fight against those who would seek to profit from drugs supply are members of the public, on whom we rely on to report suspicious activity. If you suspect someone is illegally supplying prescription or counterfeit prescription drugs, report it online or via LiveChat at www.gmp.police.uk.”

Bev Hughes, Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, said: “People’s lives can be destroyed by the misuse of prescription drugs and anyone taking advantage of this for their own gain needs to be found and brought to justice.

“Today’s operation is a really positive step forward to not only take action against those responsible for these crimes, but to also help get control of an illegal drug market that has such a negative impact on our communities.

“The illegal supply of any drug carries so much danger for those purchasing and using them as there is no way of knowing where it has come from or how it’s been produced. Police will continue to gather intelligence and crackdown on markets like this which inevitably lead to the deterioration of neighbourhoods and increased anti-social behaviour and violence.”

AMAZON The word that stands for GREATNESS, STRENGHT AND NATURE. And one-fourth of the oxygen in the entire world is produced by the Amazon rain forests. They’re known as “the lungs of the earth.”

An ecosystem protecting an earth’s biological treasures. More than 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the forest. The Amazon contains the largest collection of living plants, species animals on earth.

Evergreen as far as the eyes can see, at least 3,000 edible fruits are hidden here. The natives used 2,000 of these. Only 200 fruits are available in the West. The natural healing power of theses treasures of the Amazons has not gone unnoticed in the scientific world and those who seek the fountain of youth.

The US National Cancer Institute said that 70% of these 3000 plants that are active are found in the rain forest. Today 20% of the western pharmaceutical ingredients are found in the Amazon rainforest.

The Amazon is still largely undiscovered. In the heart of the forest ……….stands the tallest palm tree in the world. And from that tree comes the most grand treasure…..the small, round, dark violet berry….the ACAI berry.

Because acai palms are the tallest trees in the Amazon and provideshade for the other vegetation, they’ve learned to adapt to absorb more solar radiation than other plant sin the forest. And because the rain forest is, in fact rain forest, acai palms must survive flood conditions that often leave their trunks under water for days and weeks. That’s why the environmental stresses from the sun and climate have helped developed the tree’s defense compounds as a strategy for coping with the harsh environment. AS we consume these amazing fruit, we become the beneficiaries of these defense compounds.

The ACai berry possessed scientific qualities that no other fruit can claim. It has the protein profile like an egg, calcium profile like the milk, 10 times more anti-oxidants than red wine, has omega oils compared to that of virgin olive oil, and has more than 56 nutrients and vitamins on that rich Acai berry. Research shows That the acai berry is packed with nutritional value, including healthy fats, fiber along with low gylcemic index. That’s why it is no surprise that Acai berry is considered as the No.1 SUPERFOOD IN THE WORLD. The ACAI berry has the strength, energy, richness just like the Amazon where it came from.

Recently discovered by Brazilian elites and North Americans for its unprecedented nutritional value and the health benefits it has provided to the natives in Brazil.

Heralded as the No. 1 Superfood in the World by Dr Nicolas Periccone, Dr Ozz (both Anti-aging experts in US), world class athletes Christian Slater, celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Eva Longoria to name a few. And also Philippines own, Ms. Cory Quirino, Ambassador of Wellness.

This makes acai berry the brightest star among other anti-oxidant rich fruits like blueberries, pomegranates, grapes, cranberries and blackberries.

Vogue Magazine called it

“ the next big thing”

London Times said

“ The acai is the fruit of the Amazon palm tree with a nutritional content that makes other fruit blush with inadequacy.”

Washington Post said

“ The acai has beguiling berry-like flavor with intense chocolate overtones.”

Men’s Journal calls it

“ the fruit that packs a punch”

US Health Science Institute

“ Natures perfect food”

The most powerful and potent drink there is ……………. UNO introduces 1st Health Acai berry juice. Delivers the best fruit in a bottle. It targets the every cell of the body to promote wellness and with its high anti-oxidant it repairs every damaged cell to function to its outmost.

Acai berry provides over-all health, energy, vitality. Study shows fewer individuals consume less than 3 recommended serving of fruits, and thus lead to increasing number of diseases world wide……………….ACAI BERRY..holds the key to over all wellness.

Same medication, same dosage, different brands. I prefer the orange one, it looks happier.

Numeracy skills are a high priority in education and practice. The nurse is the last link in the chain to protect the patient from medication administration errors, and is responsible for every dose that they administer and are held to the five rights of medication administration: right medication, right dose, right route, right patient, and right time. To enhance accuracy and confidence in drug administration, Dosage Calculations Made Incredibly Easy! is a complete and clear guide to calculating drug dosages. The text covers basic maths (fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions and percentages), measurement systems and practical calculations.

Additional chapters cover paediatric, obstetric and critical care dosage calculations. There is vital information on recording drug administration, routes of administration, and reading drug labels, and preventing errors associated with each of these. Dosage Calculations Made Incredibly Easy! promotes awareness of all of these issues through the use of realistic examples and self-test questions throughout.

This text is for all degree and diploma nursing students who are mastering numeracy skills to ensure safe practice, and qualified nurses doing post-registration numeracy courses.

Looking Your Best.. (Read - Foolproof Ways to Lose Weight) - Amy Ozols style !!

Step 1: Avoid what psychologists refer to as “emotional eating.” This is hard, because many people have a tendency to experience emotions. To solve this problem, consume increasing dosages of psychotropic medications until you cease to feel emotions of any kind.

Step 2: Visualize yourself as a thin person. This is very important, because the body often takes its signals from the brain. Each time you take a bite of food, imagine that you are a thin person taking a bite of food, chewing the food, then spitting the food into a napkin, then tucking the napkin into your backpack or purse. After you’re done visualizing these things, start doing them.

Step 3: Get rid of your “fat clothes.” Keeping your closet stocked with unflattering garments will only distract you from your quest for a slender body. To complete this step, shred or burn everything in your closet, including any hangers or shelving that a fat person may have touched. Refrain from donating anything to charity, as this could cause underprivileged people to become obese, which would be unsavory and possibly even illegal.

Step 4: Refrain from consuming food.

Step 5: Surround yourself with thin people. This will naturally encourage you to emulate their healthy habits. Weigh your friends on a regular basis, then weigh yourself. Do you have a friend who weighs less than you? If so, consider gastric bypass surgery.

Step 6: Drink plenty of water. As you’ve probably heard, water functions as a natural lubricant in the body, flushing toxins and fat cells from the digestive tract. Water is also a delicious replacement for higher-fat liquids, such as milk. Try pouring water on your cereal or in your coffee. If you’re a baby, try pouring water into your mother’s breasts.

Step 7: Buy a pet. Having a pet will force you to take walks, which are a form of exercise. This is true unless you make the mistake that I made, which was buying an iguana. Iguanas walk very slowly and smell strongly of turds. I really cannot dissuade you strongly enough from buying an iguana.

Step 8: Vigorous sexual intercourse burns up to two hundred calories per hour. Therefore, if you are not currently promiscuous, it is essential that you begin “boning” immediately. Start by having sex with every person you know. Then have sex with numerous people you have never met. Continue doing this until you are thin.

Step 9: Self-confidence is the most attractive trait a person can have. For this reason, strive to love yourself and accept yourself exactly as you are. This will be difficult if you are overweight, on account of your loathsome physical appearance and compromised value system, but do your best.

AND, if the going gets tough, remind yourself: every person is beautiful on the inside, provided that they are also extremely attractive on the outside.

So which is YOUR favorite Step out of the ones above ?!?

To those who did not know…and to those who care...

(12-27-06)

Preston, our 3 year old little white dog we adopted in February of '06, has had quite a December. A few days after Thanksgiving, Preston started stumbling and acting "drunk" as he walked around the house. We decided to watch him for a few days and see how he progressed. Those few days went by with not much improvement so we took him to our vet. The first diagnosis was a ruptured disc in his lower back. Through x-rays our vet noticed a slight narrowing of the spine which is normal with a ruptured disc. This is usually treated with steroids (prednisone), rest, and possibly surgery. We took him home that day and saw great improvement by the end of the night.

Preston responded great to the steroid treatment for the first week. As we stared the recommended reduction of dosage he began showing signs of "drunkenness" again however this time his front left leg was getting worse. He got to the point where he could not walk a few steps with out doing a face plant. We took him back to our vet for a checkup. He took more x-rays and suggested something may be wrong with his wrist and should probably see an orthopedic specialist.

We were referred to the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center, a first class facility that only sees patients referred by the animal's normal vet. The center is located at the Tollway and Trinity Mills, about 10 minutes from our house, in a nice 3 story building built specifically for the sugary center. In other words it's not your everyday strip center vet hospital. We had taken off the Thursday and Friday before Christmas so we woke up early on the 21st and had Preston at the center at 8:00am. We met with a doctor who immediately ruled out a problem with his wrist and suggested a ruptured disk in his neck area. Preston showed all the signs of this injury and was admitted for a few tests to confirm. Surgery to repair the ruptured disk was supposed to be done before the end of the day.

Amanda and I went home to begin our remodel of the home office to try to get our minds off the stress of having the little guy in surgery. At this time we also realized what we really needed for Christmas and let everyone know, if you still have not finished shopping for us you can donate to the "get well soon" fund for Preston instead of the obligatory gift card barrage. Surgery on a dog is not cheap, and this is what we really needed for Christmas! We received a call around 3 that afternoon to let us know the results of the tests. The doctor did not see a ruptured disk or an injury to his leg or wrist in the x-rays or the CT scan. The doctors preformed a spinal tap to analyze spinal fluids to rule out a neurological problem. The samples needed to be analyzed by another set of vets so we would get the results the next morning.

On Friday the 22nd around 11am we received a call from the center to let us know the results. The doctor diagnosed Preston with an inflammatory form of meningitis (GME). This was confirmed from the spinal tap fluid analysis and has to do with cell counts not being normal. It is not a viral or bacterial form so it is not contagious like some human forms. The origin of the dieses is a mystery and not much is known about how an animal contracts it. The effects are inflammation around the spinal cord near the neck and brain. This causes pain in the neck and decreased mobility. This explained the lameness in the front leg and the pain he would experience when you touched his neck, or stood above him which made him look up. Treatment includes a heavy does of steroids (prednisone) to be tapered down as he shows improvement, as well as a series of injections to boost the immune system and try to stop the body from fighting itself. He was also prescribed decreased activity and rest; those of you who know Preston know this obviously will not be a problem.

The overall prognosis at this time is good. It was the best decision to leave him there over the holiday because we were doing our annual "Around the Metroplex 10 times in 48 hours" whirlwind tour. This allowed him to have 24 hr. care and rest without us coming and going all weekend long. He came home yesterday (Tuesday 26th) after a 5 day stay at the hospital. We have him on a heavy dose of steroids for one month and then will start to taper off the dosage and watch for signs of a relapse. He will be due for another spinal tap in a few months to analyze the cell counts and decide if he needs to stay on medication.

He has responded well to the prednisone and injections. He came home to an overly excited Oscar and has most of his normal self back. He can now walk and get up and down from the couch on his own without too much trouble. His front legs seam to be working just fine. This is an extreme improvement from the Dec. 21st when he could not stand without falling on his face. We are excited to have him back and on the way to being healthy. We realize he is not completely out of the dark yet as the doctors described he would show these signs of improvement before his cell counts are normal. We will know more after the second spinal tap in a few months. So all we can do now is hope and pray he is getting better and be happy with the condition he is in with the medication.

Thank you to everyone who has said a good word for him over the holiday. We received many "How is Preston?" phone calls, and we never had a good answerer till now. Thanks also to everyone who helped with the "Preston get well soon" fund which could not have come at a harder time financially than three days before Christmas. We could have made it work, however we realized we did not need any more Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, or Target gift cards, just our little white fluff ball back home. You helped make this easier and less painful on us, and Preston.

Thank you all very much again for all the thoughts and prayers. We will let you know how the little guy is doing when we know more. Have a great new year.

Brad & Amanda

UPDATE (01-13-07): Two and a half weeks on sterioids and the little guy is doing well. We have gone down to one a day without any problems so far. The side effect to the steriod treatment is that he has to pee three times as much. Lots of trips outside and a full stock of paper towels is a must! doing fine... let you know more in a few...

UPDATE (02-03-07): Just got second set of cytosar (cemo drug to help stop immune system from fighting itself...) injections this week. Doing well, hope to reduce the pred again soon and have our guy back to normal. No real signs of relapses yet, keep your fingers crossed. He is due back for a spinal tap in one month to check to see if treatment is working. Hang in there Preston man...

UPDATE (09-25-07) Well I hope everyone was holding to the theory of no news is good news. Because it was, until Saturday. His second spinal tap in April came back with great improvement the cell counts were normal and Preston has been drug free since then. He had always been a little slow but seamed to be doing great. This weekend we think he may have had a relapse of GME. His rear legs have stiffened, and he is losing his balance he is also constantly running while he is sleeping. Its not as bad as his symptoms the first time so we hope we caught it. We took him in today to have another spinal tap to see if the stuff is back. He is back on the pred until we find out what is wrong. He seems alert and tail wagging, still goes and puts his tennis ball in my shoe so we are hoping for the best. We will have the results in the next few days and keep you posted. Thank you for your thoughts and please keep him in your prayers. Thank you. B & A

80% of all U.S. households have private lawns, I hear.

Redesigning the American Lawn was written in 1993. It said

20 million acres were planted in residential lawns.

$25 billion was spent for the lawn care industry.

30 to 60 per cent of all urban fresh water was used for watering lawns. More than half this amount was wasted, because of inappropriate timing or dosage.

The upside of this is that we can certainly be more sustainable without too much effort!

67 million pounds of synthetic pesticides were applied.

Does that mean that garlic is not safe for dogs? Well, not exactly. The key to the safe use of garlic in dogs is the dosage level and the frequency of use. For a dog to develop problems, he would have to eat more than 0.5% of his body weight in garlic cloves to start a disease process for several days.

1. Actions of garlic.

Some ways in which garlic helps keep your dog healthy are:

Preventing the formation of blood clots.

Decreasing the accumulation of cholesterol.

Increasing blood vessels.

Helping to prevent the formation of tumors.

Stimulating the lymphatic system to eliminate waste from the body.

As an antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic.

2. Repellent of fleas and ticks.

Garlic can help you in the battle that all dog owners have against fleas and ticks. It is enough for your dog to eat garlic during the flea and tick season, so that it causes an effect.

Garlic will take a couple of weeks to accumulate in your dog's coat, so start offering it before the flea and tick season begins so it can take effect.

To use garlic as a flea and tick repellent, offer your dog garlic every day for two weeks. Then, keep it twice a week as maintenance. In addition to garlic, there are other possibilities to use natural elements as antiparasitic.

3. The importance of fresh and unprocessed garlic.

It's a recurring question: can I use garlic powder? Does the purchased garlic already cut? My answer is always NO.

You always have to use fresh and raw garlic. And really, I mean fresh, raw, freshly peeled, since garlic will keep all its properties until 10 or 15 minutes after peeling. So, raw garlic, fresh and freshly peeled.

Sorry to be heavy, but once again, just to be clear: the use of fresh, raw, freshly peeled garlic and, if, in addition, it can be organic or grown close to where you live, much better.

4. Concerns about using garlic for dogs.

It will always be safe if you feed your dog following the instructions that I will show you later. However, it is good that you keep in mind some precautions.

Pregnant females.

In the case of pregnant bitches, always be careful with any medication, supplement or treatment you want to perform. I recommend that you consult your specific case to your veterinarian or natural therapist, both during pregnancy and during the lactation period, because garlic can also change the taste of breast milk and can cause the puppies to reject it.

Puppies.

I do not recommend using garlic with puppies under six months of age. Puppies of eight weeks or less do not produce new red blood cells in sufficient quantity, so it is not advisable to eat garlic. With puppies from six months to a year, you have to be cautious and always offer half the usual dose for adults.

Edit of the last picture: The two siblings are looking pretty bored.

Cat's Claw, also know as the "life-giving vine of Peru", "saventaro", or "una de gato" is a thick wood vine indigenous to the Amazon rain forest and other tropical areas of South and Central America. It has been revered by native herbalists or the region for over 2000 years and is valued for its many uses. Modern scientific research has determined that its characteristic alkaloids are responsible for its biological activities.

The claws grew much larger than those in our Ontario house pot. They would shred the skin of anyone who climbed over the wall shown in the above photo.

Cats Claw represents wine which is commonly known by the name of “Una de Gato” and has been used traditionally in the Peruvian medicinal system for a wide array of bodily issues. It is a plant native to Amazon, and its name comes from the fact that the thorns from the leaves resemble the claws of a cat.

It often grows as woody lianas that climb with the help of some hooks that are formed thanks to some reduced branches. It is a part of the genus Uncaria which is a part of Rubiaceae family that features somewhere around forty species. The name of the genus was given by Johann von Schriebere in his work “Genera Plantarum Edition” from 1789, and the meaning of this chosen word relies on its Latin origins where “uncus” means “a hook,” as a reference to its modified branches.

In the year 1997, this herb was ranked as seventh in a popularity top based on its utilization. In some cases, people confuse this plant with cat’s foot, and it is important to mention that paying attention should fix this problem.

Cats Claw Functions & Benefits:

From the medicinal perspective, there are two species of cat’s claw which can be included in different remedies for treating certain bodily problems, and these are Uncaria Guinness and Unaria tormentosa. Most of the products that feature extracts of this plant as an ingredient target the enhancement of symptoms linked to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Furthermore, it can also be utilized for a variety of disorders related to the digestive system such as diverticulitis, colitis, gastritis, leaky bowel syndrome, and hemorrhoids.

There are some compounds in this herb which are believed to help block the production of some substances named tumor necrosis factor and prostaglandins, which are producers of bodily inflammation. Although it doesn’t appear to have an impact upon the swelling, it supposedly reduces pain, but further research is required in order determine its efficacy on a general level.

On the other hand, there is some evidence that this herb positively affects the immune system and it may even halt the cancer cells spread, as pointed out by some preliminary studies. Moreover, there were some clinical studies conducted on animals that suggest the possibility of beneficiating of a decrease in cellular damage which is caused by radiation treatment and chemotherapy when consumption of cat’s claws is included on a daily basis.

Also, it was suggested that extracts obtained from this herb exert an anti-proliferative activity when it comes to a type of breast cancer. Due to this, it started to be included in remedies which aim to treat AIDS and certain types of cancer. After this inclusion, it was also noticed that it has a positive influence on disorders which have a negative impact on the neurological system. Moreover, the featured glycosides, beta-sitosterol, and proanthocyanins offer an anti-inflammatory and anti-viral support for the organism, thus enhancing immunity. There is also a small probability of getting rid of some fungal and viral infections like Candida and Herpes when utilization of this herb is included, particularly in a supplementation form. It may even promote wound healing. However, people should keep in mind that the research is still on a preliminary level, thus the effectiveness of this plant for the above mentioned bodily issues cannot be stated on a general level and there is the probability of having no effect on certain individuals if the dosage isn’t proper or their organisms are resistant.

Caution:

When the treatment is followed on short-term, and the intakes are within the recommended daily limits, cat’s claw is regarded as possibly safe. However, it can lead to a series of unwanted side-effects like vomiting, headaches, and dizziness, depending on the individual who is taking the supplement. Because insufficient information is linked to the safety of this ingredient when it comes to women who are either pregnant or nursing, there is some concern that if the daily suggested dosages are exceeded, the infant will end up being harmed. Thus it is better to avoid its consumption in these situations.

Additionally, it can worsen leukemia and shouldn’t be taken by people who suffer from low blood pressure because one of its effects is lowering this pressure. Keeping in mind that this herb may determine an increase in the activity of the immune system, people who have auto-immune diseases may experience a symptom enhancement. Thus those who have lupus or multiple sclerosis should consult a personal healthcare before taking any remedy that features cat’s claw. Because it has an impact on the blood pressure control, it is advised that people who are about to undergo a surgery stop consuming this plant with two weeks before it. Although moderate, there are some interactions with medications like antihypertensive drugs, immunosuppressants, and medication that lowers the immune system or is changed by the liver.

This herb grows in areas from Europe, Asia, and the United States, where the climate and soils are within the required limits for proper development. Because its popularity has grown in the past years, it can be found in any civilized country, sometimes even in stores. Furthermore, due to its discovered beneficial effects upon the human body, nutritional companies also included it in a wide array of supplements that aim to treat conditions linked to the digestive system in the majority of the cases. However, it is often only an additional ingredient, and there is the possibility of observing no effects on its utilization because further research is needed.

In the past few years, it was also introduced on the market of herbs that help with some types of cancer, and there were some preliminary studies made on animals which pointed out that there are high chances of a positive influence in some cases of cancer. On the other hand, it is important to keep in mind that people suffering from auto-immune diseases, nursing or lactating women, and those who take medication that might interact with this plant should either avoid its usage or do it under medical surveillance. When a side-effect is observed, people should immediately disrupt its utilization.

one of many asian plants at parc des buttes chaumont. The dosage is critical! Too concentrated and your immune system gets "re-booted"! (not very pleasant). But can be quite helpful as a weak infusion. I see very aged asian folks walk by and pick the leaves; otherwise very few people notice this very large plant from China. It was planted in 1867 and is still growing strong! The bark and roots of the plant are a powerful stimulant and should be avoided unless one is an expert and knows how to prepare it. The leaves are relatively safe but care should be taken as always with some guidance.

FDA doubles dosage of Covid-19 monoclonal antibody, raising concerns about access and supply

The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday revised the emergency use authorization for Evusheld, a monoclonal antibody against Covid-19 for immunocompromised people and those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, to double the initial dose. People who've already received the drug should go back for an additional dose as soon as possible, the agency said.

"Based on the most recent information and data available, Evusheld may be less active against certain Omicron subvariants. The dosing regimen was revised because available data indicate that a higher dose of Evusheld may be more likely to prevent infection by the COVID-19 Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.1.1 than the originally authorized Evusheld dose," the FDA said in a news release.

Drug protects those who can't get Covid-19 vaccine

Evusheld was granted an EUA on December 8. It's authorized as pre-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of Covid-19 in certain people over the age of 12 who have a moderately to severely compromised immune system due to medical conditions, who've gotten medications or treatments to weaken the immune system and may not get enough immune response from vaccines, or who have been advised not to get a vaccine because of a severe reaction to a Covid-19 vaccine or its components.

Previously, Evusheld was authorized with a dosage of 150 milligrams (mg) of tixagevimab and 150 mg of cilgavimab as two injections into a muscle, one after the other, with repeat doses every six months while the coronavirus remains in circulation. With the revision, the FDA has increased the initial dose to 300 mg of both tixagevimab and cilgavimab.

"Patients who have already received the previously authorized dose (150 mg of tixagevimab and 150 mg of cilgavimab) should receive an additional dose of 150 mg of tixagevimab and 150 mg of cilgavimab as soon as possible to raise their monoclonal antibody levels to those expected for patients receiving the higher dose," the FDA said.

Protection against symptomatic disease may not last as long as was shown in clinical trials, as that data came before BA.1 and BA1.1 emerged, the FDA said.

It's not clear whether these subvariants will still be circulating in the coming months or if another subvariant will become dominant, the FDA noted. It gave the example of the BA.2 sublineage, which Evusheld is expected to have greater neutralizing activity against. Because of this, the FDA can't give a recommended timing for repeat dosing, but it said it will continue to monitor the situation and provide information when there's more data.

Good news and bad news

The revision of the EUA is positive, Dr. Dorry Segev, a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins Medicine, told CNN.

"I think it's great that we remember that this whole pandemic is basically building the airplane as we fly it. And I think that it's great that there continues to be good science in studying this particular monoclonal antibody, and in studying all of these monoclonal antibodies, and in understanding the impact of these monoclonal antibodies on the new variants or maybe the impact of the variants on the efficacy of these," he said. "And I think that it's great that the new data identified the ideal dosage that immunocompromised people need to be protected, and it's actually a reassurance that with the new dosage there will be protection, and that's great."

There are challenges, though.

"The tricky part, of course, is to get the word out to everybody who already got doses that it's important to supplement their dose so that it is more effective against the new variant, against Omicron specifically," Segev said. "And also, to continue to get the word out to immunocompromised people that it is important for those who will benefit from this to seek this therapy."

Segev also noted supply and distribution challenges with Evusheld.

The US government has shipped nearly 600,000 courses of Evusheld across the country since December 13, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services. In January, the government announced the purchase of an additional 500,000 doses of Evusheld, which is made by AstraZeneca.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 2.7% of US adults are immunocompromised. This equates to about 7 million people.

"There already is inadequate access to this product for those who need it, and that will become more challenging now," Segev said. "Of the remaining doses, you have to basically cut them in half in terms of availability to actual people."

More doses of Evusheld needed

Katherine Lontok, director of science and policy communications at the the Immune Deficiency Foundation, said that Evusheld fills a crucial gap for those who have a primary immunodeficiency and may not develop protective responses to Covid-19 vaccines.

"It is important to adjust the dose of Evusheld as necessary to provide meaningful protection to those who receive this treatment, who are moderately to severely immunocompromised, from currently circulating viral variants. We applaud the FDA for quickly generating data on the newest variants and acting to update the product's authorization to afford patients the best protection possible," she told CNN in an email.

"On the other hand, doubling the dose will make the treatment even more scarce, and we continue to hear that patients with primary immunodeficiency are having trouble accessing the treatment, even with the additional 1 million doses the federal government has purchased and an accelerated distribution schedule to states."

Dr. Brian Koffman, co-founder, executive VP and chief medical officer of the CLL Society, told CNN in an email that "The fact that Evusheld is still being recommended and doses quickly adjusted to provide optimal protection against any variants is a sign that that it is still active and an important option for the immunocompromised. We need more of it and for it to be quickly and equitably distributed.

"This change in recommendations makes the situation more complicated and frustrating, but it doesn't change the fact that many of the immunocompromised can still greatly benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis."

For those who have already gotten the monoclonal antibody, the doubled dose has raised concerns about availability and access.

Dr. Vivian Cheung, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School, has a rare genetic disorder that requires immunosuppressants. She received her first dose of Evusheld in January.

"We're so far from having enough doses at the lower dose," she said. "Now, we're saying that everyone needs to take two doses every six months, so four doses in a year. There's just no way that, with the current doses, this will cover everyone who needs it."

The increased dosing will also widen the divide between people who can do anything possible to get a dose and those who, for various reasons, either do not know about Evusheld or know about it and can't access it.

For Cheung, getting the first dose of Evusheld was not easy, and it looks like getting the second will also be difficult.

"I wrote to all my doctors, and only one came back and said, 'let me see what I can do,' " she said. "I'm, in many ways, very privileged. I'm a physician, I'm an RNA biologist, I know a lot of people who can help me navigate the medical system, and still only one person came back and said 'let me see what I can do.' "

The Science Behind Why Children Fare Better With Covid-19

Children’s seeming imperviousness to Covid-19’s worst effects has been one of the biggest mysteries—and reliefs—of the pandemic. Now the reasons are coming into focus, scientists say: Children mobilize a first line of defense known as the innate immune system more effectively than adults.

Although some children do fall seriously ill after coming down with Covid-19, the most have mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Unlike other respiratory viruses such as the flu or respiratory syncytial virus, SARS-CoV-2 doesn’t hit children nearly as hard as it does adults or the elderly.

The lower risk to children has discouraged some parents from getting them vaccinated. Vaccination rates among children eligible for Covid-19 shots lag far behind those for adults. Public-health experts say they want to explain the science behind children’s stronger protection against Covid-19 while still emphasizing that vaccines are important to protect vulnerable children and control infections. Covid-19 hospitalization rates for children reached records in January as the Omicron variant drove cases far past previous pandemic peaks.

“Some do get quite ill,” said Lee Beers, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ board of directors and a professor of pediatrics at Children’s National Hospital in Washington.

The immune system consists of different lines of defense. Innate immunity coordinates the initial response against an infection, while adaptive immunity develops more slowly and mounts a more specific defense.

To understand why children fare better than adults against Covid-19, said Kevan Herold, a professor of immunobiology and internal medicine at Yale University, imagine the immune system as a medieval fortress. The innate response, which includes mucus in the nose and throat that helps trap harmful microbes, is like the moat, keeping assailants out. Innate immunity also includes proteins and cells that trigger the body’s initial immune response. Dr. Herold likens them to cannonballs launched as the enemy is beginning an invasion.

A second line of defense, the adaptive immune system, includes T cells and B cells. The adaptive immune system takes longer to initiate a response, but can remember specific weaknesses of past invaders. Think of them as soldiers preparing for battle inside the fortress, Dr. Herold said.

Innate immunity doesn’t have the same kind of memory. It relies on patterns associated with harmful microbes more generally. Immunologists have found that children’s immune systems have higher levels of some innate molecules and increased innate responses compared with adults. Experts including Dr. Herold and his wife, Betsy Herold, a pediatric infectious-disease doctor at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore in the Bronx, think this is key to helping children better fight off the virus that causes Covid-19.

As Covid-19 swept across New York in early 2020, the Herolds set out to figure out why so many more adults were ending up in hospitals with Covid-19 than children. With other researchers, they initiated studies looking at children’s immune systems. They started with what Betsy Herold called the lowest-hanging fruit: cytokines, small proteins produced by a range of cells that help them communicate with each other.

Two cytokines important to the innate immune response are less prevalent in the blood of older people compared with younger people, they found. “That’s where the idea that it was an innate response started to be developed,” Betsy Herold said.

The Herolds’ study comparing 65 young patients and 60 adults with Covid-19 in New York City found that children were less reliant on the adaptive immune system than adults, likely because they had a stronger innate response.

They also looked at nose-and-throat swabs of 12 children and 27 adults and found that more genes involved in innate immunity were activated in the children, who also had higher levels of cytokines involved in innate immunity.

A lack of immune memory relative to adults may also give children an advantage in fighting off SARS-CoV-2, said Amy Chung, a researcher at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, Australia. After exposing the blood of healthy people to the pandemic coronavirus, she and her colleagues found that healthy seniors had strong pre-existing antibody responses to Covid-19, likely because they had been exposed many times to other coronaviruses, such as those that cause common colds.

Children, on the other hand, don’t have as strong of a pre-existing antibody response, said Dr. Chung, because they have had less exposure to other coronaviruses. While that might not seem like a good thing, in this case it confers an advantage: When children encounter SARS-CoV-2, they mobilize and attack the essential parts of the virus immediately.

Older people’s immune systems are targeting parts of the SARS-CoV-2 virus they have encountered in other coronaviruses. “Those parts don’t seem to be as important to stopping infection,” Dr. Chung said.

Children’s relative resilience to Covid-19 has led some parents to keep eligible children from getting vaccinated. The Kaiser Family Foundation’s most recent survey of 420 parents found that half weren’t too worried or not worried at all about their child getting seriously ill from Covid-19.

Kate Symonds said she doesn’t plan to get her 2-year-old and 9-month-old children vaccinated when they are eligible because of the relatively lower risk of severe illness and because she is worried about possible adverse effects from the shots.

“If it was a disease that was affecting young people more than older people, my opinions might be different, but that’s not the case,” said Ms. Symonds, 40, who lives in Canandaigua, N.Y. She said her husband is vaccinated and that she isn’t.

Vaccination rates among people under the age of 18 are significantly lower than those of adults, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Around 40% of eligible children are fully vaccinated, compared with about three-quarters of eligible adults.

Researchers haven’t found evidence that Covid-19 vaccines pose any serious safety concerns. In trials conducted on thousands of children, the most common side effects of the vaccine were mild and didn’t have any lasting impact, the CDC said.

Covid-19 vaccines aren’t yet available for children under age 5. U.S. health regulators delayed their review of the Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech SE Covid-19 vaccine for that age range because the initial two-dose series wasn’t working well so far against the Omicron variant during testing.

Even if vaccines are available for this younger group, only 31% of parents of children that age say they would get their child vaccinated right away, according to the Kaiser poll. Around one-quarter of parents said they would definitely not get their child vaccinated.

But children’s risk of getting infected with Covid-19 appears similar to that of adults, recent research suggests, and children appear better at spreading the virus than early studies suggested.

Some children do require hospitalization with Covid-19 and some continue to have symptoms long after they have cleared the virus, said Betsy Herold. Children also are at risk for multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or MIS-C, a rare condition that can occur in children several weeks after Covid-19 infection. MIS-C can lead to organ damage or even death.

“The innate barrier is not 100% protective,” Betsy Herold said.

While that protection is robust, she said, Covid-19 still presents risks to children including the possibility of lingering symptoms. Without vaccination, she said, “you’re taking a gamble.”
