"Say my name"
Welp, I missed today by about 20 minutes. I've spent all day working on some Computer Science homework, so I thought I'd share what I have been staring at (my notes).
I also noticed I don't have very many dark photos. The majority of the pictures I take are bright, so I kept that in mind while taking this one. I should experiment a bit more with darkness.

A seven-scene play on the life, death and aftermath of William Christian (“Illiam Dhone”).The play is a masterful handling of the contentious question of the traitor/nationalist status of Illiam Dhone in handing the island over to the Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. Kneen manages to leave the question still open in the play, despite making Dhone a very strong and heroic character.
That J. J. Kneen (1873 - 1938) was perhaps the leading Manx linguist as well as scholar and nationalist of his day would not come as a surprise after reading this play. He had a great many articles and translations to him name, although his most famous work is probably the translation the Manx National Anthem into Manx.
Kneen was a keen playwright also, writing many plays on Manx topics and themes. This play of ‘Illiam Dhone’ is a curious instance in that Kneen deals with Dhone and the complex issues surrounding him masterfully while giving the play a very strange format - effectively splitting it into three parts:
(1) the Manx “rebellion” (in which Dhone does not appear throughout the first scene, when the Derby Monarchist rule is overthrown),
(2) the arrest, trial and execution of Dhone, eleven years later,
(3) the story of Dhone son’s overcoming a rival to marry the daughter of one of Dhone’s accusers.
It should be clear what a daring opening act it is to leap straight into the rebellion, but also what a curious final act Kneen gives the play. It almost feels as if the play would be better titled, ‘Illiam Dhone and the Curse of the Clan Christian’.
Some of the characterisation is wonderful, particularly the interplay of Lady Molineux and Bishop Rutter in Scene I, where Rutter’s almost camp reactions to her outspoken attacks of the Roundheads is brilliant when set against the raucous songs that are left to us by the historical Samuel Rutter (Bishop 1660-1662/3). But this is nothing to the brilliant handling of Dhone himself, who is heroic, clearly drawn and yet vague at the same time. This is perhaps shown in one of the key lines in the play when Dhone is refusing to try to escape from the troops out to arrest him:
Christian:
Were it a crime to be a patriot, then am I a criminal indeed. I ever placed my country before aught else.

‘Twould be as well for a mouse to struggle against a lion, as for our puny little Isle to attempt to dictate to the armed forces if the English State.

My grandfather, William Iliff, was a sea captain... known, unsurprisingly, as The Skipper.
This appears to relate to a trip to Russia in May-September 1915. Not sure what it says... it could relate to the occasion when he saved several Russian sailors in the Baltic - and was presented by the czar with some rather nice enamelled coffee spoons - or it could be purely routine... possibly the Russian language version of an exit visa.
All I can pick out is Captain William Iliff (капитаиа Вилъяма Иллифа ~ the curse of the double L is not new!), Riga (Рига) ~ today the capital of Latvia ~ and some dates.

This modified Harris Shutter Effect image generates colored "ghosts" on a black background. Things that move and other differences between three more-or-less sequential photos are emphasized while static features turn black.

July 1883 Letter from Caroline S Fryer, Browick Hall, Wymondham, Norfolk Probably to Pomeroy Solicitors thanking for the return of items and mentioning her late husband.
Caroline Sarah Fryer was the wife of William Goodwin Fryer who died 11th April 1881 at Wymoden. An Estate Agent and Farmer he left an estate of £14, 791. 10s. 8d.

These young boys found a chunk of limestone foundation - worthy of a picture. Photographs from our 2013 community dig at Hamline. We had over 40 people from the University and the neighborhood join my students for a Saturday of archaeology fieldwork.

On arrival in the Ashton in Makerfield area, the troops of the 79th Infantry Division were billeted as follows:
At Garswood Park: 310 Field Artillery Battalion (HQ, HQ Battery, Batteries A-C, Medical Detachment, Service Battery); 313 Infantry Regiment (HQ, HQ Company, 2 Battalion (HQ, HQ Company, Companies E-H), 3 Battalion (HQ, HQ Company, Companies I-M), Medical Detachment, Service Co)***.
At Golborne Park: 311 Field Artillery Battalion (HQ, HQ Battery, Batteries A-C, Medical Detachment, Service Battery); 314 Infantry Regiment (HQ, HQ Company, 1 Battalion (HQ, HQ Company, Companies A-D), 2 Battalion (HQ, HQ Company, Companies E-H), Service Company)
*Local place-names are frequently misspelled in the American documents; thus Golborne is rendered as “Goulborne” or “Goldborne”, Ashton in Makerfield becomes “Ashton in Makersfield” etc. For the most part I have left these uncorrected in my commentaries on the photographs in this set.
**Due to limited space at both Ashton locations, part of the 314th Infantry Regiment was billeted at Tatton Park, Cheshire, whilst the 313th Infantry was split between Garswood Park and Marbury Hall, Cheshire.
***Although the lists prepared by Lt. Col. Philip Grinton for The D Day Museum place these units of the 313th Infantry Regiment at Golborne Park, there is overwhelming evidence in the form of regimental histories, other official documents and personal accounts that they were in fact at Garswood.
I bought a used book the other day that had three loose pages like this in it. It is the sort of kid-writing that it would seem impossible to fake. I hope to use it in some way in a digital collage.
In October 1999, PhotoWorks invited myself and Marysia Lewandowska to undertake a year-long residency in the Design Council Archive at the University of Brighton.
Documents was the culmination of that residency, which included an exhibition, with a film Tearing, a publication, a web-browser [sadly no longer available] and conference.

Enclosed in a letterpress printed belly-band to keep the suite all together.
