All those long days and nights struggling with my thesis all lead up to this.

Descripción Los numerosos hallazgos en diferentes yacimientos de todo el ámbito romano de este tipo de ánfora llamada Dressel 2-4, viene a demostrar la importancia económica que tuvo el vino como producto comercializado a gran escala en este época. La mayoría de autores coinciden en señalar la región del Lacio y la Campania como los principales centros de su elaboración y distribución, desde el siglo I a.C. hasta el siglo II d.C., como envase para el transporte y almacenaje de los vinos itálicos. Pronto, a causa de su presencia en el comercio por todo el Mediterráneo, se imitarán en los talleres de la Gallia Narbonense, la Tarraconense, la Bética, y en el Limes germánico.
La tipología admite unas ciertas variaciones, por ejemplo en la forma del labio, de manera que podemos encontrar dentro del mismo tipo labios engrosados de sección redondeada, de sección triangular pendiente, o rectos ligeramente engrosados. El cuello también puede ser troncocónico o cilíndrico. Generalmente las asas serán bífidas, de sección redondeada y que nacen debajo del labio.

I've been having issues with my "Poverty Wizards" wireless receivers. So, I naturally did a google search for upgrades/modifications. What do you know, I found a bunch, starting with Jeremy Kuster's.
I then found strobemonkey's mods and decided to tackle this project myself. Not wanting to wait until my 433mhz antenna arrived, I thought I'd try the coiled antenna modification which StrobeMonkey adapted.
What I wanted were hard numbers from pre-mod and post-mod tests. Not finding anyone with such results, I decided to run my own battery of tests. What you see above are the results.
The coiled antenna mod is already documented on StrobeMonkey's page. The mod on the Receiver Double-A Battery I did is shown above. With some changes to other workings by strobists.
Changes include, mounting the AA battery holder on the back of the Cactus receiver, drilling through the holder and receiver and attaching them with velcro (to be hot-glued in the future). The hole you see on the top of battery holder is the original wire feed (to be filled with hot glue), the reroute brings the wires through the back of the holder.
I am very happy to report a great increase in distance. WIth four receivers to test, I had a good field of products to test. Pre-modification test resulted in Receiver #1 being the weakest and Receivers #3 and #4 were the strongest. After the first modification: coiled antenna mod, Receiver #3 gained a 200% increase in line-of-sight range. The lowest increase was #4 with a 143% increase in range.
After the second modification: AA_Battery mod, implemented on only #1 and #4 (the weakest and strongest). Tests show a 350% increase in line-of-sight range for #1 and a 200% increase in receiver #4. Results above.
Next step, 433Mhz antenna modification. Results will be posted.
Update July 24, 2008: new test results post-433mhz antenna mod
This is a French document written in 1807. I bought it at a flea market in Clermont-Ferrand France for 5 euro (about $7 USD). The penmanship is beautiful. As far as I can tell, the document was written and signed by Victor ROBLOT from Saint Martin-Du-Tartre, France.
DS5 kept noticing the romain numerals on some clocks while we were having vacations on the coast. Since he had been quite familiar with both digital and analog clocks, he was puzzled that he couldn't read that kind conveniently. He kept asking me how to read those symbols. I decided not to just teach him I - XII. Instead, I showed him how to decode the romain numerals: (First, the value of symbols, I V, X, L,C,D,M. Then the rules how the numerals are expressed.) At the end of explanation, he was able to convert numerals to numbers, numbers to numerals and do additions/subtractions freely. A week later, I printed out a random worksheet online to see if he still comprehended the system,and he did! He had no problem on decoding the 'tricky' 40,90,400,900 subtraction part.

A history of Pedal Power under way, and the story of volunteering ...

Volunteers are central to nearly everything we do at Pedal Power ACT, and have been since our early days.
One of our volunteers, Bryan Kalms, is working on a project documenting the 40 year history of Pedal Power ACT (you can read more about the project here).
A member since 2007, Bryan says he initially joined Pedal Power ACT from an interest in urban design and the impact urban design had on the development of cycle infrastructure. Since then he’s volunteered on many projects, from helping review the new website, to running a mountain biking group once a week.
Bryan has been looking for a history project, and with 40 years and 245 editions of the newsletter, years of magazines and many people to interview, the project means he’s getting to know the history of the organisation inside out.
Although Bryan is only two months into the project, some key trends are already clear.
“Pedal Power has been extremely effective as an advocacy group, which has become apparent through my history research. Pedal Power’s volunteers have changed the physical face of Canberra though their advocacy work,” says Bryan.
“It’s amazing how much work the Pedal Power volunteers actually do, and the how many years they stay with the organisation.”

day! How I pray for it! And how the dreams and prayer make light the burdens I have borne since I was a student at Government College! The pain is to have spent a lifetime on this and to see no light at the end of the tunnel. Well, not quite. Something has happened to the Ogoni people in the last 4 years which owes itself to me as initiator, but to all the rest of you as well. And it is surely a good feeling that the Ogoni have been put on the world map and that the people have been empowered to fight for their rights. The fruit of all that will depend on those who come after me. I see an Ogoni star in the sky, an example to other denigrated communities in Nigeria and Africa. Whether it will shine everlasting, I cannot foresee. It is still early days. But I wish it with all my soul.
