Raffles Hotel Singapore / 莱佛士酒店 / 新加坡

Raffles Hotel (Chinese: 莱佛士酒店) is a colonial-style hotel in Singapore, dating from 1887, and named after Singapore's founder Sir Stamford Raffles. Managed by Raffles International, it is known for its luxurious accommodation and superb restaurants. The hotel houses a tropical garden courtyard, museum and Victorian-style theatre.

No Asians were permitted as hotel guests until the 1930s.

More than 300 Japanese troops committed suicide in the hotel using grenades following the liberation of Singapore.

On 16 September 2007, the hotel celebrated its 120th anniversary with Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, who turned 84 on the same day.

Raffles is where the Singapore Sling was invented. The cocktail was invented by bartender Ngiam Tong Boon between 1910 and 1915.

Scanning family documents. Here is my Grandmother's German Passport (Deutsches Reich Reisepass issued in 1933). This was the passport that she used when she immigrated to the United States in the mid 1930s during the solidificaation of Nazi power in Germany. Only the used pages in the passport are included here as scans. She would be married in the States and her name would become Meta Beer (after marrying David Beer).

"The automatic writing project started out as an activity among friends and locals. I would write a line someone else would write a line and so on... Then people would overhear us and ask if they could participate and write something too (which surprised me) of course I said "yes!" At that point I realized that lots of people have something to say. I started asking strangers to add entries, then I graduated to offering people $1.00 to participate, some people do not accept the dollar and some pay me a $1.00 (paying it forward). It's becoming quite a lovely, surprising and compelling project. People from many walks of life are participating: homeless, a news reporter, academics, doctors, drug addicts, lawyers, tourists etc... People have written things in my journal that they'd never say out loud, not to anyone. Some of it's so sad, some intriguing, hilarious and so on... At the end of the day, every one of these people understand that their entries are being uploaded to the internet and are comforted in knowing that they will be heard. I have no idea where this is going, but it's going just fine! FYI: English is not everyone's first language here. I will be illustrating the book/journal after the text is done. I hope that everyone who reads these entries learns something about people, mostly that we never know what someone else is going through.

The rear of the postcard shown on the next photo shows a correspondence dated June 23, 1909, with the Post Office placing the Cancel stamp on it the following day. The handwriting is typical for the era and rather hard to read; please let us know if it can be translated so we can place it in the caption here. (Photo by Brandon Torrice)

People have always commented that my packaging for Pretty Cloth is really sweet, so I thought I'd document it for once. The first part of the packaging is the namecards for Pretty Cloth. They are made from handcut card stock, which is printed by laser printer on one side. On the other side I stuck a moo.com Pretty Cloth sticker, and then I sewed a pinked piece of cloth scrap (I save these from my craft work, a lot of the cloth on my namecards have been used in one bag or the other) and write on each card myself. It's a very labour-intensive but cheap and memorable namecard!
