This is a silhouetted shot of the 'Candle' a 22m high cor ten steel sculpture situated on the waterfront of Gloucester Docks by artist Wolfgang Buttress.
Gloucester docks May 26, 2014. Gloucester is the most inland port in Britain, and the docks are dominated by towering warehouses which stand proud along the water’s edge. Visitors can see skilled shipwrights and riggers repairing, restoring and building traditional ships and rigging all year round in Tommi Nielsen’s dry dock on the West Quay. Planing machine
The dock maintenance workshops are survivors from the 1880s. Much of the original machinery survives, including a Whitworth planing machine, a Whitworth slotting machine, punching-and-shearing machines, a long-bed lathe and a steam hammer. There is also wall-mounted line-shafting and a Tangye horizontal engine and Cornish boiler. The building is a Scheduled Monument, like the rest of the yard.
The line shafting is being renovated and fitted with a hydraulic motor so that it can be used to power some of the machinery, Work is well advanced on the planing machine.
