Walker Art Center owns THE BOX IN A VALISE, a witty creation by Marcel Duchamp, who devised the idea of fabricating his works (familiar to art lovers) in signed and numbered miniature versions – a small urinal, a tiny typewriter cover, Paris air. They were the first multiples – small-scale sculptures that seemed more affordable and more accessible than the unique works. Multiplication was the message.
Every December for the past twenty years, the artist Harriet Bart, creator of the WINTER PROJECTS, has been making and sending multiples. These multiples echo her larger finished works and serve as a holiday greeting for sixty or more friends and colleagues. Moreover, they are produced for just $5.00 as giveaways (in the spirit of Fluxus) and are packaged to go through the US Mail. The recipients have collected some twenty years’ worth of multiples that are often housed together on a special shelf, much like the one seen in the Walker Library vitrine.

I never could figure out just what the purpose of having an area in the display case designated for "year cards" was. But here they are.

Cruella De Vil Disney Villains Designer Collection Doll
Personal Photos - Deboxing - Uncovered
The slip cover and acrylic top have been removed, revealing the doll in her display case in clear view from three sides. She is still attached to the backing and plastic spacer by rubber and plastic bands and T-tabs. Because of her wrap around fur coat, there are no wires securing her to the backing. She is also supported by the built-in display stand. There is a wire around her legs securing her to the stand.

A poor shot (but I was backing into this, taken to illustrate the lunacy of the place.
To the right a display which keeps pre-cooked chickens hot.
To the left a chilled display case.
In between a few sheets of glass and an airspace just big enough to get my hand in. One side of my hand was hot, the other cold. This end of the fridge felt warmer than any other part of it, and the reverse was true in the heated rack.
So basically Tesco's are using a lot of energy to ensure that there is a steady heat flow from right to left. Well done Tesco's.
Oh, and if anyone else is passing, you might want to avoid the desserts and cream at the right hand end of the fridge.
Thought I would photograph my display case full of toys and collectables. This is seriously the most geeky thing I love to do. >____<
From Tina:
Thank you for looking at my vintage compact collection! Compacts became a fashion statement for women in the early 1900s and are still made today.
I started collecting vintage compacts around 10 years ago. A co-worker was cleaning out her mother's house and gave me an old cigarette case that she found. I held onto it for awhile just excited about the unknown history behind it, but when I did a little research, my envy turned more in the direction of the powder and rouge compact.
I have over 100 vintage powder and rouge compacts. I have gotten most of them at yard sales, flea markets, EBay, and some as gifts. My oldest one dates back to 1920. Based on information from a 1999 price guide, most of them value anywhere between $25.00 to as much as $500.00 each. Collecting compacts is a fantastic hobby for me! They do not take up much space, they are easy to display, they are a great conversation piece, and they are very durable and hold up well over time! My 6-year-old thinks they are so neat and I really enjoy sharing them with her. To this day, I always keep an open eye to add to my collection whenever I can. It is something that has become part of me and I love the fact that every compact I own has its own very personal history all hidden inside, something that will remain a mystery forever!

Inside an old display case, in a museum in Madisonville, Louisiana.
I like how these display cases have the handles removed and are locked up tight. I guess stale prize-winning baked goods might prove to be too much of a temptation for some.

Cruella De Vil Disney Villains Designer Collection Doll
Personal Photos - Deboxed - On Display Stand
Cruella De Vil has been fully deboxed, then replaced on her display stand. Her coat and accessories have been put back on. But her cigarette holder has been moved to her right hand. It is a more natural position, as she is holding her purse in her left hand. Her skirt is partially open, so show her legs, as she was when boxed.

I was finally able to find a cheap and acceptable-looking display case for my ever-growing collection of figures.
They were about $120 a piece, so I bought 2 of them. They are nowhere near as nice as my $1,000 display case. But I much rather spend $240+ on two average pieces than a grand on just one nice looking display case.
I just threw a few figures into the new home to see what they looked like. I just need to pick up some risers and stands, and I'll be ready to move more of my figures in.
