Located in the middle of the western wine district, is Hollabrunn the transportation hub and capital of this region. The city's importance lies in its administration function and in its position as school location. The main community of Hollabrunn is divided into 22 cadastral municipalities. Hollabrunn is twinned with the cities of Jinhua in China, Kyjov in the Czech Republic and Holič in Slovakia.
The settlement of the Hollabrunner area dates back to the early Neolithic period, in the locality itself have been found traces of a linear ceramic settlement (Linear band Pottery culture). A double grave with rich offerings in Hollabrunner reed "In lower Satzen" could be associated with the Bronze Age. At the mill "Old Hofmühle" in Hollabrunn settlement remains of the Hallstatt period have been located.
Hollabrunn probably originated from a double settlement founded by the Bavarian Counts of Cham-Vohburg in North-South location in the 11th century with separate truce. The first documentary mention of the evolving street village on the old trade route Znojmo-Vienna took place in 1135 under the designation "Holerbrunnen (elderberry well)". From the second half of the 13th century, the respective write variant of the name Hollabrunn in the historical sources also is complemented by "superior", "maior" or "upper". Since 1927, the city on the basis of a decision of the Lower Austrian Landtag (Diet) is named Hollabrunn.
1908 Hollabrunn was elevated to the status of town, its tradition as a market goes back to the 14th century, in a document from 1377 Hollabrunn is first described as a market. Towards the end of the 14th century Hollabrunn still belonged to the domain of the Lords of Sun Mountain (Sonnberg), from about 1394/1400 to that of the lords of Maissau. In the following period the ownership changed frequently, in 1606, finally, Hollabrunn became a separate dominion, fell in 1662 into the possession of the Dietrichstein and was acquired in 1864 together with the market Hollabrunn by Erwin count of Schönborn-Buchheim.
The economic development of Hollabrunn is to be seen in direct connection with its traffic-convenient location along the trade route between Vienna and Moravia. Since the 14th century, in Hollabrunn is regularly held market, fairs, horse, wood, grain and livestock markets established in the course of time. During the last decades, Hollabrunn positioned itself as regionally important trade fair location.
Viniculture and wine trade until the 19th century formed the main industry of Hollabrunner population. East and west of the town extended an extensive wine region, three cellar lanes emerged. Opposite the wine industry, the agriculture, especially the cultivation of cereals and sugar beet, in the 19th century was formative for Hollabrunn, but lost massively during the 20th century in importance. Although currently essential parts of the Hollabrunner municipality are utilized agriculturally and forestally, is the management, however, for the main carried out from the neighboring communities.
The religious life of Hollabrunn in the course of centuries was also determined by the Protestantism and the large Jewish community. End of the 16th century, most of the population of Hollabrunn had already turned to the Protestant doctrine. The attempt of a recatholicization by the Bishop of Vienna, Melchior Khlesl, failed yet in 1605, but was operated successfully after 1655 by Pastor John Reisch, with the support of Capuchins, who had been resident in the locality since 1665. The Jewish cemetery on the outskirts of Hollabrunn is reminiscent of the Jewish tradition of the lieu. Since the 17th century, Jews lived in Hollabrunn, 1901, constituted the Jewish Community Hollabrunn and existed until the year 1938.
In Town Museum "Old Hofmühle" in Hollabrunn in a permanent exhibition colonization and cultural emerging of the district Hollabrunn are documented. Next to the museum building, a mansion from the 16th century, are among the city's attractions in particular the parish church of St. Ulrich, the former Capuchin monastery, the building of the former Archbishop's Seminary and the Art Nouveau houses along the in the 90's remodeled main square.
