A female Field Digger Wasp (Mellinus arvensis) in our Staffordshire garden this morning. There are a couple of active nest burrows in the garden and I saw this female emerge and fly onto the leaf to warm-up. These are very active wasps, so it was a rare change to grab a shot of one sitting still!
These wasps catch flies, paralyse them and provision the brood cells in their nest burrow with them. The developing wasp larvae use the flies as live food. They then pupate and emerge the following year.
An old bucket-wheel excavator now lies abandoned. The green hue of the shot is due to chemical contamination from the marsh.

One of my favorite things about this truck. The crane supports the weight of the pole, while the claw keeps it in the upright position. The pole itself is made up of 40 2x2 round bricks, and is actually held off the ground. The boom and outrigger design can handle much more weight than this.
