Test shots with Pentax K20D with and without a homemade flash diffuser (white plastic film canister), using the camera's flash at various flash intensity (-2 stops to +1 stop). I was three feet from subject. Colors much more accurate with diffuser. Exposure was fine. Shadows still too harsh, but that's what's gonna happen of using an on-camera flash (I thought the diffuser might help with that, too).

Last night we had a clear night and I was going to image either M1 or the Jelly Fish Nebula, but decided on something I haven’t imaged before IC2162. I was hoping for about 5 hours or so, but my neighbors tree once again interfered. I was thinking of staying up for the sky was still pretty good but Friday is a Physical Therapy day, so off to bed at 23:00 or so. I have included the annotations to outline the objects in the image. IC2162 is a compact diffused nebula lying about the tip of Orion’s cudgel. IC2162 is positioned at about 2.5 degrees south of the “Monkey nebula” and belongs to Orion. IC2162 has a smaller size of 15 arc minutes than that of the Monkey Head nebula. But the nebula has fewer characteristics in its shape and has no familiar nicknames like “Monkey nebula”, but some call it the Mushroom Nebula, IC2162 is not that well known in amateur observers. IC2162 has been registered for only an eastern (left) round nebula, the center one has a number of Sh2-257, and the largest one on left hand side is Sh2-254. www.astrobin.com/0jb9hd/
I got this one right after class one night. As I was getting in my truck I noticed the fog and lights from a ship so I headed down to the pier. The tripod and remote were definitely needed for this shot. I spent a few minutes counting the timing of the light so I could catch it with an open shutter. I framed it both portrait and landscape and feel this frame was most pleasing. There is a little reflection of light on the water from the beacon to help warm the tone a tiny bit.
