A stall at the Amoy Street Hawker Centre in Singapore.

This is another view of the waterfall which I posted the other day. Although the waterfall is quite close to the road the descent is quite tricky, particularly when carrying camera gear and tripod etc. Despite this practical difficulty the scene is more than worth the effort. My thanks to Paul Gallagher for an excellent workshop and enjoyable time in The Lakes.

Delicate Arch trail.

Length: 3 miles roundtrip

Difficulty: Moderate

Description: Delicate Arch is the most recognizable arch in Arches National Park, and perhaps anywhere in the world. It also happens to be located along one of the most dynamic hiking trails within Arches National Park. More than 480 feet above the parking lot and trailhead in the valley below, Delicate Arch is hidden in a bowl at the top of one of the park’s famous sandstone fins. Delicate Arch is freestanding, and magnificently alone in the natural sandstone bowl, standing out against the multitude of horizontal planes around it. The arch was once part of the upper section of the fin, until erosion took its toll upon the sandstone throughout the years, and now Delicate Arch is all that remains of that Entrada sandstone formation.

The Delicate Arch Trailhead is located on the Wolfe Ranch turnoff, which is 11.5 miles up the Arches Entrance Road. The right turn to Delicate Arch is advertised at the turnoff, and the trailhead is on the left side of the road, at the ranch. The trail is rugged and steep, especially near the end as it mounts the sloped side of the sandstone fin. Along the way, visitors will pass a pioneer homestead, Ute Indian petroglyphs, an overgrown streambed, throngs of juniper, a smaller arch, and the famous slickrock for which the Moab area is world-famous.

Delicate Arch Trailhead

The trail starts at a fairly large parking lot off the side of the road, passes the old Wolfe Homestead, and then crosses a bridge over Salt Wash.

Wolfe Ranch

This homestead was built by a disabled Civil War vet, John Wesley Wolfe, in 1888 and inhabited until 1910, when the aging owner moved back to Ohio.

Ute Petroglyphs

This panel of rock art is attributed to the Ute culture. In includes a number of bighorn sheep, horses and dogs.

Frame Arch

Frame Arch is next to invisible when compared with the splendor of Delicate Arch just around the corner; most hikers barely even recognize the arch on its own merits. However, Frame Arch is famous for being the perfect window through which to photograph Delicate Arch, and many people use it to frame their shots of its more photogenic sibling, as its name suggests.

Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch has graced many magazine covers, mantle pieces, coffee tables, stamps, license plates, and a variety of other media. It is an international attraction, and has drawn its fair share of abuse over the years, including (now illegal) climbing, and ignorant pyrotechnics.

Today’s business representatives who rely on data centers know that outages or other difficulties could directly affect their clients and profits. Therefore, a risk management plan is crucial for these critical facilities to operate smoothly to not only satisfy existing customers, but to also gain new ones. These six tips for structuring a formal risk management document will help data center professionals anticipate the worst-case scenarios and prevent them.

1. Implement Details for the Types of Risks Faced

Various risks could hinder data center operations. Dealing with each one means identifying each type and getting into more specifics as needed. Some leading data center brands structure these risks as tiers to keep them organized. The first tier might address power loss risks, while the second one goes into handling floods or fires.

After settling on the risk types, data center professionals could break the content down further by selecting subcategories for each main section. For example, a segment about security-related threats could give information about physical security, as well as people who might remotely log into data center tools on their mobile devices.

Sticking to a strategy when organizing the content requires forethought. However, doing it makes the information in the plan easier to find and update as needed.

2. Recognize the Shared Responsibility of Risk Mitigation

A well-structured plan to minimize risks in a data center features content that emphasizes how everyone has a vital role in threat mitigation. Every person can help keep a data center operating without incidents, and the processes they follow collectively achieve that goal.

For example, a facility’s front gate security guard could require that each visitor sign in upon arrival and present evidence of a previously arranged appointment. Similarly, data center employees who work around electrically powered equipment must receive training and follow safety procedures to reduce threats.

Including a part in the plan that describes how people in certain roles contribute to risk management gives clarity and sets expectations. It also helps data center managers identify where to invest in more education or other resources so that people feel well-prepared to carry out their duties.

3. Evaluate the Suitability of Third-Party Infrastructure

When service providers offer data center audits, they work with colocation and cloud partners, plus assess on-premises infrastructure. Anyone tasked with creating a plan to deal with risks should use the same approach for all-encompassing results.

One option is to split the plan into several sections. The first might include the risks directly within a company’s control. Another could have the threats primarily associated with third-party entities. A third segment could detail the issues that a company and its outside providers have a shared responsibility to conquer.

Making those distinctions facilitates asking the right questions and confirming needs during conversations with external providers. Additionally, data center managers can become more aware of, if and when, third-party providers may expose their customers to excessive risks. In those cases, it’s necessary to have serious conversations about fixing the issues of concern and potentially switching to another data center if problems persist.

4. Incorporate Disaster Recovery Steps

Cutting risk does not mean only identifying the situations that could disrupt a data center’s operations. It means knowing what to do after disasters strike.

Disaster recovery in the IT sector generally falls into two categories — natural disasters and system failures. However, recent months introduced new challenges due to COVID-19. Some data centers included pandemics in business continuity plans, making them better prepared than other businesses.

Besides addressing things like backup power and systems that stop fires from spreading, planning for disasters also means determining what to do if entire departments or teams become infected with the novel coronavirus. Additionally, companies should explore new precautions to take when employees work remotely.

Ensure that data center risk management efforts include step-by-step instructions for dealing with specific risks when they arrive. Giving a facility’s employees access to a document that equips them to act quickly and decisively helps limit a catastrophic event’s impacts.

5. Account for Sound-Based Risks

Designers of music venues and rehearsal studios consider acoustic needs among their top-of-mind concerns. However, people who plan and assess data centers may overlook how acoustical threats could interfere with a facility’s operations.

The tricky thing is that some products installed to limit risk could introduce it in other ways if they cause prolonged acoustical disturbances. For example, loud alarms associated with fire suppression systems could affect sensitive hard disk drives’ functionality. Noisy climate control equipment could have similar effects.

When writing risk reduction plans, data center managers should describe any current measures that deal with acoustic threats, as well as future updates that could do even more. For example, soft materials in rooms make sounds less likely to carry, thereby limiting the vibrations that could harm delicate equipment.

6. Describe Alert Notification Procedures and Appropriate Actions

Today’s data centers have advanced systems that monitor the environment and issue prompt warnings about potentially dangerous situations. A plan created for data center risk management should explain how those systems work and what people should do after receiving notifications of possible problems.

For example, what steps do they go through to verify whether there’s a genuine issue or a false alarm? Should a person notify other team members after getting an alert, or immediately start investigating the matter?

The people involved in structuring the risk plan must ensure that the document includes up-to-date contact details for the relevant parties. If a worker struggles to find their superior’s phone number, they could waste valuable time, meaning an incident may worsen and progress uncontrolled for too long.

Don’t Delay When Dealing with Data Center Risk Management

Coming up with a detailed approach for handling data center risks takes time, effort and input from multiple parties. However, it’s well worth doing because these plans can stop problems from escalating and help make facilities and their team members more resilient.

Practice this afternoon for the 'difficulty' competition. Climbers do not see the route before attempting it, they have 8 minutes to climb it and in the final are judged on the difficulty of hand holds along with the height they manage. The wall is 15 meters high at at 30 degree slant. It's terrifying to look at but just look at this girl, hanging upside down by one hand, blowing chalk dust from her other hand - massive respect from me!

These have left him inoperable to repair hernias throughout his body, abdominal wall reconstruction to fix protruding tacks and mesh, and now thoracic degeneration. He has been on bedrest since Thanksgiving with increasing inability to accomplish even the smallest tasks. The nerves on his right side are always sending pain, buzzing, tickling feelings through his body. His medication list is too long to post here and he continues to decline. 6 1 and 130 pounds, difficulty swallowing, right side numbness, inability to sleep, throat closure, tremors, left side muscle lock up, and a host of other physical, nuerological, mental and emotional issues. Local university hospitals have been unable to help and referred him to the Mayo clinic for diagnosis and surgery. This at a time of complete financial exhaustion.

Technical Specifications

- Departure point: Cala Montgó

- Type of route: Round

- Distance: 18 km

- Time: 6 hours

- Difficulty: High (because of the distance involved)

To follow the route:

The route starts at Cala Montgó and from the beach itself you head towards L'Escala, along Carrer Trenca Braços, on the right, coinciding with the GR-92. Once at the top, in front of Illa Mateua Beach, in Carrer Punta Montgó, turn left to follow the sea, following the GR-92 markers. Go past the Punta dels Cinc Sous, Cala del Salpatx and Les Penyes until you get to Port de la Clota.

Then cross over the port by Carrer Romeu de Corbera, until you come to Riells Beach. At the beach, walk along Passeig del Petit Príncep until you get to Passeig del Mar, which takes you, following the coast, to the old centre of L'Escala. Carry along Passeig Lluís Albert and Port d'en Perris to La Platja. From La Platja (the main town beach) take Carrer Cargol and then Ronda Mar d'en Manassa, on your left, following the coastline. Go past La Creu small bay where you will see the fishermen's huts. This coastal path takes you to the place known as L’Oberta, from where you can see the beaches of Empúries. Walk along the Ronda del Pedró for about 200 metres and when you get to the Lampadòfor (the lamp bearer, the sculpture built to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic flame) turn right to take the Empúries Promenade.

The Empúries Promenade is two and a half kilometres long and runs parallel to the beaches of Empúries. It takes you past the Platja del Rec, Platja del Portitxol, Platja de les Muscleres and Platja del Moll Grec beaches, and you come to Sant Martí d'Empúries, which is the end of the route.

Go past the village of Sant Martí d'Empúries, heading south, taking the main road that leaves the village. From the same road, take the left at the first path you come to, and continue along this path towards Mas Sastruc. At the crossroads with Mas Sastruc, carry straight on and cross over the main road at its narrowest part. On the other side of the road, near the Tourist Information Office, take a path there is on the left that will take you to Les Corts farmhouses, signposted as "Camí de les Corts a Empúries", go between the farmhouses and turn left towards El Molí de L'Escala restaurant, until you come to Camp dels Pilans, in Carrer Muntanya Rodona. This will take you to a path that heads south, right at the edge of the houses. You will find a signpost that labels the path "Via Heraklea" and from here on, follow the livestock path which winds between the pine trees. You will come to the large pine tree known as Pi Gros, carry on towards the south until you reach the road to Bellcaire. Cross over this road and go into the car park of Els Recs farmhouses, from here go to the football pitch and take the path behind it heading south, until you get to Cortal Nou. From Cortal Nou, take the "Termes" Path heading east, go through the old sand quarry, following the green and white markers, cross over Carrer Punta Milà and following the perimeter of the campsites, you will get to the end of the route, Cala Montgó.

Others values:

The value of this route lies in the combination and variety of spaces and landscapes; on the one hand the route takes you along the coast, going past a large number of beaches and small bays and panoramic viewpoints. On the other hand, it takes you past farmhouses and along rural paths with great landscape and botanical interest.

The Voice of Venus—11/10/04

Having just come in from the cold, my hands are numb and I'm having a little difficulty typing. Please warm up and please Muse do not desert me and please words do not fail me, not today, not now. Because of a cloud-out, I missed the Transit of Venus in June but today made up for that many-fold. Leaving the house this cold and clear morning, I did not know what the sky would present, hardly expecting it could be better than yesterday, but I had hopes and they were quickly realized.

There, big and low on the horizon, was the most beautiful rock-a-bye-baby Moon imaginable, five to ten degrees above the horizon—so low it seemed almost to be cradling the earth as it certainly was the trees. How did the Ancients explain the gray earthlight sheen on the rest of the darkened portion of this Orb? It is obviously the Moon herself, shining in both crescent white and celestial translucent gray. Did they worship this Moon above all else as I do? Beyond the Moon was Venus, and equidistant above her on a slight angle was Jupiter, as if Euclid himself had laid them out. They looked like a most brilliant Belt of Orion, except the line from the Moon to Jupiter was not perfectly straight but formed an angle of perhaps 160 degrees at Venus, which was both the perfect center of the two-dimensional belt and the apex of the tilted isosceles triangle. Jupiter, at the top of the Belt, but at the right base of the triangle, may have been thirty-five or forty degrees above the horizon.

My walk was rapid. I could not wait to get to the Grove. Taking my seat beneath Arbolita, I saw Venus and Jupiter clearly and a part of the Moon, but in this kind of seeing, a fragment is no diminishment because the mind becomes rapt and plays in these concealments and unveilings, for this is the Music of these Spheres. "High" Jupiter, in an area largely devoid of leaves and branches, stayed mostly in view, but the lower Venus and Moon were prone to partial and total obscurations, especially the former because of her smaller size. The bigger Moon oozes out her music, but Jupiter, the smallest, tends to punctuate his song with a "pop" from behind a branch or leaf; but even with Jupiter, the most careful attention can catch the gradual passing of photons. Venus can ooze or pop, depending on the environment in which she is temporarily residing. Seeing this alignment and the possibilities it held, I went slack-jawed, wide-eyed, and more concentrated than I have ever been. At one point, they all appeared like clichéd stars of Bethlehem, with halos and rays extending out from them. The Moon came close to extinguishment only once but recovered before completely slipping away. Venus disappeared many times but after great anticipation, would come back with a "pop" until. . . .

She had been away for what seemed an "eternity" when she came out so slowly and I heard her song gradually rising like the ecstatic, yearning voice of the Soprano who soars above the chorus in the final movement of Mahler's Second "Resurrection" Symphony, a piece of music that always reduces me to vibrating synapses.

This is the sound that I have heard periodically in the best dreams of my life, and now in these woods, where I have had some of the best experiences of my life, I was hearing it again.

Wikipedia, Ballpoint pen drawing

Ballpoint Pen Drawings are a form of art that consist of the usage of a ballpoint pen in a way similar to an average pencil except that the results are more permanent. The medium itself is considered to be easier to purchase when compared to other artistic materials. It is also a tool that any level of artist can use. Unlike other pens such as a fountain pen or crowquill pen the ink is less messy and does not bleed as much. The ink is instead distribute through the small ball at the tip of the pen which helps manage ink distribution more without difficulty. There are many intricate pictures produced by shading and the creating of many tones through techniques that are very similar to a pencil drawing. Not only is black ballpoint pen ink being used, various color inks have been as well. Subject matters for this type of art consist of portraits, sketches, still-life's, landscapes, abstracts and ect. The most prolific ballpoint pen artist, publisher, video producer and information provider Jerry Stith,[1] is known for pushing in the whole new movement of using ballpoint pens as a medium for illustrating and drawing period. He has produced 3,750 of his own art pieces using this medium and is still continuing as of 2011. The movement itself has been going on for some time and is picking up speed even now. Thanks to his enthusiasm in this new form of art many amazing artist such as Babis Kiliaris, Juan F. Casas, Virginia Rodriguez Cañete, Andrey Hrenov and Shirish Deshpande [2] have appeared in the art world. Not only are the many artworks created with this medium made for just amusement they are being placed in exhibits such as the one by the Korean artist Il Lee, who will display his abstract drawings at The Crow Collection of Asian Art located in Dallas, Texas on April 8, 2011.[3]

This marker found at the overlook of the Copper Creek railroad trestle, Speers Ferry VA (on U.S. 23) about 4 miles south of Duffield VA. The text on the sign reads

In 1775 Daniel Boone and a group of axmen, following a Native American trade route, blazed a trail from the Anderson Blockhouse to a site on the Kentucky River. This trail, later to become the Wilderness Road, traversed 200 miles of wilderness and encountered a number of natural barriers. One of these was the Clinch River. The gorge to your right has been widened by considerable blasting and rock removal to make room for the modern highway and railroad, but in the eighteenth century it afforded passage only for Troublesome Creek. This creek, which enters the Clinch about fifty yards east of the bridge to your right, got its name from the trouble it gave travelers trying to follow it through the gap to the river. The ford was on a shelf of rock that lies under the bridge. Though usually safe, it was dangerous in high water. In May 1779 a party of militia almost drowned while crossing the river here. They were escorting British Governor Henry Hamilton, who had been captured at Vincennes by George Rogers Clark, to Williamsburg, Virginia. The photograph on this exhibit is an artist's conception of the Clinch River Ford as it might have appeared in 1779.

"29th. Crossed the north branch of Clinch river, forded stock creek 6 times, forded Clinch river with great difficulty, some of the men were near being drownd, it fell sleet and hail with an exceeding sharp wind - a very small canoe took over some of us, after making a fire & getting well warmed we proceeded on our march thro' cane brakes, the ways crooked steep & miry"

I organized some meetings with teenagers (12 - 14) and adults (25 - 32) concerning the difficulties they have to get work, to talk with others, and to speak clearly. I was surprised these people have a good listening ability and are eager to learn and get solutions to their current situation.

SEARCY â Despite having difficulty scoring with runners on base, Harding rallied for a pair of come-from-behind victories over Central Baptist in a doubleheader at Jerry Moore Field. The Bisons won the opener 3-2 and took the second game 7-6 in extra innings.

Harding (15-15) extended its winning streak against Central Baptist to 10 straight dating to 2006. The Bisons left 25 runners on base in the doubleheader, including 15 in game two.

Harding trailed 2-1 in the fifth inning of game one before Donny Stephensâ two-out double to right scored Tyler Thompson with the tying run. One inning later, Adam Darbyâs sacrifice fly plated Trent Kinnear with the winning run.

Senior Shane Bishop (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Harding starter Hayden Shirley. Bishop came on with the bases loaded in the fifth and the Bisons down 2-1. He struck out Andy Morris to end the inning, and struck out six of the seven batters he faced in his 2.1 innings of hitless relief.

Sophomore Kyle Boyd suffered the loss in a complete game effort. He allowed 10 hits and three earned runs.

Unfortunately for him, Boyd was also the losing pitcher in game two. He came back to the mound in the seventh inning of the game with the score tied 6-6. Boyd held the Bisons scoreless for two innings before Darby lined a single to left to score Kinnear again with the winning run.

Senior D.A. Kremer (2-1) pitched 3.0 innings of hitless relief to collect the victory and lower his ERA to 1.02 for the season.

The Bisons are back in action Saturday against Ouachita Baptist. The three-game series begins with a doubleheader at noon. Sunday the teams play the finale at 1 p.m.

I was chopping down some elephant grass in the front yard, and after my Craftsman handsaw had difficulty cutting it, I tried using my Fiskars (AKA Gerber) Brush Hook machete, and a chop deflected it up off the hard grass, and into my hand before I could react. I had a lanyard on the sharp knife to act as a mechanical advantage as a longer lever for greater force; with a half grip on the very end of the handle with the 550 cord lanyard around the wrist aiding in the retention of the chopper.

The bad news is, this also caused me to be unable to release the knife as it deflected, and the momentum continued it into my hand, before I could react it had hit me.

I was unable to stop, much like when you think you can brace yourself for a car impact, but later when it happens you find out that you can't.

I felt the impact, which was a numbing in my hand. I was afraid to look at first, and I hoped I had been hit below the blade at the top of the handle, because it was numb and didn't hurt very bad.

I looked and saw that I'd been cut, realizing the straite edge at the bottom of the blade did it. If it had been closer to the end when it impacted, it would have been a force multiplier for greater damage. Worse still at the very end, where the hook is. It has a curved edge, and causes a shearing affect as it cuts, because the curve causes all the energy to be focused on a smaller area which moves as the curve forces it to as it chops, much like a kurkri.

I tried to hold my hand steady to minimize bleeding.

I tried to hold my hand steady to minimize bleeding, and hurried to the house, leaving a dripping blood trail on the way.

Dad drove me to the hospital, and I ended up getting 9 stitches. The numbing solution they injected me with felt like boiling water.
