one difficulty in photographing the mechanical miniatures is that they tend to be in motion most of the time. nowhere is this more severe than in the "opium den" machine, which, plausibly, depicts the denizens as rapidly shaking, jittery maniacs. also for some reason there's a snake that comes through the wall, and some skeletons and zombies and things. anyway, that's why this is so blurry (though the snake managed to come through pretty sharp!)

An unidentified man does some repair work with a hammer due to some mechanical difficulties at Bradley Field.

If you have difficulty pronouncing the name just remember that Howth rhymes with both.

If you like eating out and if you like seafood then Howth is the place to go. Personally I would recommend Aqua. If you are not interested in the many restaurants and pubs the place still has a lot to offer as it is a popular area for birdwatching and sailing. It is also popular with anglers. Howth is also a popular destination for cyclists and hillwalkers, particularly on weekends.

There are plenty of sea mammals, such as seals in the harbour.

I must admit that I was a bit surprised so see a notice which read as follows: "A person shall not feed a seal from the quayside or from any other place in this port. A person who contravenes this Bye-Law is guilty of an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine nor exceeding Euro 5,000". Today there were many people feeding the seals and I checked a number of tourist guides (in Easons) and many of them suggest "feeding the seals" in Howth as a recommended activity.

The most famous visitor to Howth may have been King George IV of England, who visited Ireland in 1821 and is chiefly remembered because he staggered off the boat in a highly inebriated state. He did manage to leave his footprints at the point where he stepped ashore on the West Pier.

Emerald Pool-Lower

Length: 1.2 mile roundtrip

Difficulty: Easy

Trail Map: Zion National ParkTrails Illustrated - Buy

Description: The Lower Pool is popular among hikers for its beauty and accessibility. The trail is short and gently sloped—with only 70 feet of elevation gain. Shaded by cottonwoods and other riverside greenery, the trail winds through one of Zion’s many hidden paradises, leading to a startlingly gorgeous canyon sanctuary. The Emerald Pools system has a few trail options for the three different levels of the Pools. All of them except for one start across the road from the Zion Lodge, where you go over a bridge to cross the North Fork of the Virgin River. Swimming is not permitted at Emerald Pools anymore.

Emerald Pools Trailhead

Two trails start at this spot, the Lower and the Middle. The trail to the lower Pool is fairly straightforward, just over half a mile long, meandering through the riparian habitat along the bottom of the river, even passing underneath the two waterfalls that come from the Middle Pool above.

Lower Pool

Despite the relative ease of the hike, hikers find themselves amid the classic towering rock formations of Zion—but surrounded by a paradise of green.

Middle Pool

Steeper and longer than the Lower Pool Trail, the trail to the Middle Pools begins in the same spot, but climbs higher up the slope, exploring yet another level of the exquisite Zion waterway.

Upper Pool

The Upper Pool is harder to reach than the other two, though worth the extra time that it will take to visit. Waterfalls, fast and powerful during the runoff months, add to the breathtaking backdrop of Zion Canyon.

Grebes had great difficulty nesting on Lake Wanaka because the large weed nest they build breaks up as the lake rises and falls, or in storms. Zoologist John Darby had the brilliant idea to build floating platforms moored to piers in the Marina and grebes have gladly taken them over as stable nesting sites. Here is one of several platforms he built.

One difficulty with my garden is that the property drops off drastically to the north from our back door; hence, everything reads 'flat' and low.

Also, the earth is solid clay, and is almost impossible to break up, even with tons of sand, peat and ag lime.

Retaining walls would be too expensive, and they would not raise the eye level substantially.

For these reasons, I thought I'd try making my garden a mixture of perennials and containers. Seems to be working.

There is a problem with this approach as well. I do a lot of watering.

Focus on Eldercare's response to COVID-19

At the purpose when the noxious impacts of COVID-19 showed first in Wuhan, the entire city and therefore the entire of Hubei Province ground to a halt. The lockdown of Wuhan brought remarkable torment and threatening difficulties for several individual occupants therein first focus. Presently, COVID-19 represents those equivalent difficulties for individuals and social welfare frameworks all-inclusive. Especially, it tests our aggregate endeavors to believe one another, particularly the foremost defenseless among us.

As a populace, individuals quite 70 will generally have more fragile insusceptible frameworks and progressively fundamental conditions that obstruct their capacity to battle the infection. They're likewise sure to dwell on bunch day to day environments, nearby people. Floods of COVID-19 passings in nursing homes — first within the Seattle territory, at that time on the brink of Sacramento and now during the country — have underscored this inauspicious reality. Up until now, Californians quite 65 have made up, at any rate, a fourth of the state's affirmed instances of COVID-19.

Be that because it may, guidelines, especially for helping living offices, are unsafely failing to satisfy the expectations in protecting California's older folks from this infection. Luck, Gov. Gavin Newsom's plan on Aging activity, as of now ongoing, presents an opportunity to forcefully address this peril and find how to secure an enormous number of more seasoned Americans.

Helped living focuses are an aid to the Eldercare business and therefore the enormous corporate proprietors that currently command the market. Simultaneously, in any case, an absence of guideline and oversight of staffing levels and capabilities — particularly prerequisites for on-location doctors and much prepared clinical experts — has left the business defenseless against misuse and unfortunate results. One glaring issue that has got to be tended to: helped living focuses are directed by the state Department of Social Services rather than the Department of Public Health.

In any case, it helped to measure maybe a piece of social welfare and clinical consideration conveyance framework, not only a direction for living. Propelled a year ago, Newsom's plan on Aging has framed a warning advisory group, is holding open gatherings and within the fall is planned to offer a 10-year plan which will address issues from lodging and vagrancy to crisis readiness to manhandle and disrespect. The venture has made a "Value Committee" to urge a contribution from a progressively differing gathering of residents and associations, including agents of the crippled network, Native Americans and other ethnic minorities.

Considering the spreading coronavirus general wellbeing emerging, it's basic that the representative's plan on Aging takes on an expansive and genuine open arrangement job. We weren't bothered with elevated level clichés for tending to the wants of the old. We'd like solid arrangements, solid guidelines with implementation teeth and a guarantee to continued oversight.

The Age of COVID-19

Older people who get themselves out of the blue alone without authority over their conditions are at specific hazards for an assortment of serious, even hazardous, physical and psychological well-being conditions, including a subjective decrease. Limitations on the opportunity of development ought to be proportionate and not founded solely on age.

COVID-19, as different irresistible melodies, represents a higher hazard to populaces that live in nearness. This hazard is especially intense in nursing or matured consideration offices, where the infection can spread quickly and has just brought about numerous passings. About 1.5 million older people individuals live in the nursing homes in the US, barring helped living offices and different settings making nearness.

Twenty-three individuals kicked the bucket in a flare-up at an office in Washington State in February and March, and the US Centers for Disease Control detailed 400 additional cases in offices as of April 1. On March 31, wellbeing experts in the Grand East district of France detailed 570 passings of older people in nursing homes.

Older people often end up in nursing homes due to governments' inability to offer adequate social types of assistance for individuals to live freely in the network, approaches that have put millions at included danger of getting the infection as a result of their organization. Governments ought to guarantee the progression of network-based administrations with the goal that individuals don't wind up in organizations without different alternatives.

Expound now on the roles played via care laborers in continuing the lives of the old during that emergency, and who, however dreadful themselves, by and by remain day in and outing inside the bounds of their wards to offer fundamental consideration.

Care supervisor Chang, the woman in charge of the consideration laborers among whom I led my hands-on work, coordinated the change of her ward into a self-sufficient fixed of a unit of care. The passage to her floor is carefully monitored; just fundamental conveyances are permitted, for instance, nourishment and clothing. Since nobody can enter or leave the structure, the flask for the older was transformed into a dozing region for care laborers. Despite the very fact that a lot of consideration laborers have their circle of relatives to require care of, they put that piece of their life under the control of others. Care specialist Lin, whose spouse died at the start of the pandemic, did not have the chance to completely grieve his passing due to incessant understaffing at Sunlight. She came back to figure following the burial service, despite realizing that she not, at now expected to figure at Sunlight to hide her significant other's clinical costs. Lin's arrival says much regarding her promise to her calling, to her colleagues, and to the old she had come to understand so well. My examination with care laborers recommends that it's an enthusiastic association and an awareness of other's expectations that propels them to remain the end of the day in care work. This is often borne out immediately.

Carefully add China is often seen as being grimy and unfortunate, thanks to an excellent extension to its nearby hook up with the realistic consideration required by slight, skilled bodies. Chinese consideration laborers are for the foremost part provincial to urban transients or urban specialists laid far away from previous state-claimed processing plants. In any case, direct consideration is intricate. In any case, its unpredictability goes unrecognized, or maybe disregarded by institutional powers that organize benefits and generalize the old as bodies to chip away at, to the disregard of their social-passionate necessities. As is valid with Sunlight, things which might typically undermine the keenness of care laborers, for instance, the absence of institutional acknowledgment for his or her enthusiastic work, are required to be postponed. Care specialists are currently centered around a shared objective: ensuring the gift assistance of the older. COVID-19 propels care laborers to consider what kind of care is required and the way to offer that care. It fills in as a channel through which the elemental beliefs of care are observed. Care is about common human weakness and our intrinsic association. Care laborers at Sunlight, in their aggregate every minute of everyday endeavors to secure the older, typify this ethic through their consideration. May the respectful regard, they hold of the older in their consideration redound on them and everyone consideration laborers overall who are fighting this pandemic on the bleeding edge!

Like the consideration laborers at Sunlight, the laborers in numerous nations are regarded human life so that we cannot be embarrassed to return clean with the leading edge about ourselves. Salute the spearheading staff who salutes our purposeful endeavors to handle the pandemic in numerous settings around the globe, within the daylight, yet additionally to ensure that veterans are appropriately treated, took care of and washed.

We all hope and pray that the coronavirus will soon be controlled and subdued. And that when the crisis is behind us, that we continue the important work of protecting the elderly and other vulnerable segments of our citizenry.

How Can I Contribute in Times of COVID-19?

Write your testimony about the concequences from the time of Corona virus (COVID-19). Here is a great knowledge base about the effects of the Corona virus. Thank you for your story! article-directory.org/article/717/40/Emergency-Situations...

Worsening wildfires have made the Glacier high country's season shorter and shorter. The Going To The Sun Road doesn't open all the way to Logan Pass until late June, and the park can be closed due to fires by August. And that's not even considering the smoke from fires in Canada, which can make hiking unhealthy even when the park is open. So one sometimes has to make do with conditions that aren't ideal. In this case, the Mt Oberlin trail was covered in places with snow drifts up to several feet deep and badly undermined by meltwater.

Snow shoes would've been a good idea. A really good idea.

At one point (before this shot was taken, I think) I was transitioning between solid rock and a snow drift when I went in almost up to my hip. It wasn't the first time I'd gone in, but this time my other foot was still planted on solid ground above the top of the snow. I twisted the knee that went in the snow and the ankle that didn't. One of them, I'm not sure which, made a loud enough pop to be heard 20 yards away. Surprisingly enough, no real harm was done. My ankle was a bit unstable and my knee was a little sore, but I got back down safely.

Experiencing some technical difficulties posting this shot this morning. First, Flickr couldn't locate it on my computer, then Affinity Photo couldn't locate it, or any other iPhone photos from my Europe 2020 trip (but it did locate newer iPhone photos for some reason!). I had to drag it to Affinity rather than search for it (!), then I couldn't rotate it, so I had to enable the crop feature to rotate it. I know, I know, first world problems, but still.

Soon I have to go to work and use my laptop with the trackpad that doesn't respond properly to clicks anymore. Ugh. It's interesting how frustrated we can get with modern technology that would have appeared mind-blowing 20 or 30 years ago.

Sitting on History: Bill Woodrow. 1996

Bronze

Main atrium, Midsummer Place Shopping Centre

Purchased by London and Amsterdam Properties Ltd

'Sitting on History' was originally designed for an exhibition at the Tate Gallery, London in 1996. Bill Woodrow's idea was to create a sculpture that functioned as a seat and was only complete when a person sat on it. 'Sitting on History', with its ball and chain refers to the book as captor of information from which we cannot escape. History is filtered through millions of pages of writing, making the book the major vehicle for years of research and study. Woodrow proposes that although we absorb this knowledge, we appear to have great difficulty in changing our behaviour as a result.

The books from which the original maquette (model) of the sculpture was made came from a box of books given to the artist by a London bookseller, discarded as no longer saleable. To Woodrow's wry amusement, the case contained three volumes on the history of the Labour party, which he used for his maquettes. Here in Milton Keynes the sculpture is suitably sited outside a bookshop. A further version of the sculpture is installed in the British Museum.

Bill Woodrow is a highly respected sculptor who has exhibited widely in Britain ad abroad since graduating from Chelsea School of Art in 1971. His early sculptures were made from materials found in dumps, used car lots and scrap yards, which he cut, altered and placed in new relationships to create new forms, metaphors and stories. In the late 1980s he began to work in bronze but retained the storytelling aspect of his work. His sculpture 'Regardless of History' was exhibited on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2000.

personally, i had a lot of difficulty getting into the groove of digital art during quarantine. i had an entirely different experience while i was at school, but now my environment isn't exactly comfortable enough to motivated and working on my laptop. i went through a lot of different ideas; first, an animation that i was really excited about, but i was anxious i would fail getting into such an ambitious project. then, i had an idea about Tame Impala (fav music project), which was my final progress, but i didn't feel like i had the best references and it was getting really frustrating how awkward the piece was turning out. i decided to change everything last minute and do something that is more calming for me. i would say my best art skill is being able to draw realism, but it's not the direction i want to go in as an artist. i used my final to explore my style and find out what interests me. what i did was somewhat similar to my one adobe illustrator piece: creating shapes out of a face to indicate highlights and shadows. i went through with this and used colors that i really love and want to continue using in my future art. it was also a learning experience for me because i'm still not so much used to digital art. i feel like i have way more flexibility with a tool in my hand then drawing something digitally, and while i have been able to find a rhythm with certain projects of the past, making the art that i want to put into my portfolio is hard with this medium. i am still learning though, so it's okay. continuing with the explanation of with my piece, i had also watched Midnight Gospel and that show is amazing. one of the few shows that makes me ponder after finishing it. i wanted to explore the sort of soft psychedelic they incorporate in their animation.

i wouldn't say i'm proud of the work i produced, but i definitely proud of myself for what i tried to take away from this project. nyc is so inspiring and motivating, but being inside of my house with little to experience has been really challenging. i definitely am going to learn more and grasp digital as i grow, but this class has definitely taught me a lot about pushing myself and thinking from a business/portfolio review standpoint. thank you for a great spring semester :)

"There has been an ongoing debate and advocacy for the restoration of Lake Pedder to its original pre-dam condition since it was flooded in the 1970s. The flooding of Lake Pedder was a highly controversial event that led to the destruction of a unique and ecologically significant ecosystem. Lake Pedder was renowned for its stunning natural beauty, including its pink quartzite beaches and surrounding wilderness.

Numerous environmental groups, activists, and concerned individuals have advocated for the draining of Lake Pedder and the restoration of its original landscape. They argue that restoring Lake Pedder would not only be an act of environmental justice but also a recognition of the intrinsic value of natural ecosystems. Restoration efforts could involve draining the lake, removing the existing dams, and implementing measures to rehabilitate the surrounding landscape.

However, there are also significant challenges and obstacles to restoring Lake Pedder. These include technical difficulties associated with draining the lake, the potential impacts on downstream ecosystems and communities, and the vested interests of the hydroelectric industry.

While the case for restoring Lake Pedder to its original pre-dam condition is compelling from an environmental and ethical perspective, it remains a complex and contentious issue that requires careful consideration of various social, economic, and ecological factors."

Right now everything is hard, really hard and I'm striving with all my might to pull through it, some of you may know the whole story others just a little or none at all. I just took this photo originally as stock to mess with but when I put it on my computer I noticed how this expression on my face isn't my regular one and I wasn't actually forcing any expression when I took the photo. So I decided I'd try and edit it to work with how I'm feeling. I can't really explain it well but everything is difficult right now. I'm strong, I'm keeping my loved ones together as best I can. I'm working hard and getting extra hours to help financially at home. But sometimes I just have to wonder who decided to make everything so difficult for me.

I'm not asking for sympathy from you as why would I ask for it from strangers who I may have never given it to before, I just wanted to try and explain what feelings I'm expressing via this photograph.

Delicate Arch trail.

Length: 3 miles roundtrip

Difficulty: Moderate

Description: Delicate Arch is the most recognizable arch in Arches National Park, and perhaps anywhere in the world. It also happens to be located along one of the most dynamic hiking trails within Arches National Park. More than 480 feet above the parking lot and trailhead in the valley below, Delicate Arch is hidden in a bowl at the top of one of the park’s famous sandstone fins. Delicate Arch is freestanding, and magnificently alone in the natural sandstone bowl, standing out against the multitude of horizontal planes around it. The arch was once part of the upper section of the fin, until erosion took its toll upon the sandstone throughout the years, and now Delicate Arch is all that remains of that Entrada sandstone formation.

The Delicate Arch Trailhead is located on the Wolfe Ranch turnoff, which is 11.5 miles up the Arches Entrance Road. The right turn to Delicate Arch is advertised at the turnoff, and the trailhead is on the left side of the road, at the ranch. The trail is rugged and steep, especially near the end as it mounts the sloped side of the sandstone fin. Along the way, visitors will pass a pioneer homestead, Ute Indian petroglyphs, an overgrown streambed, throngs of juniper, a smaller arch, and the famous slickrock for which the Moab area is world-famous.

Delicate Arch Trailhead

The trail starts at a fairly large parking lot off the side of the road, passes the old Wolfe Homestead, and then crosses a bridge over Salt Wash.

Wolfe Ranch

This homestead was built by a disabled Civil War vet, John Wesley Wolfe, in 1888 and inhabited until 1910, when the aging owner moved back to Ohio.

Ute Petroglyphs

This panel of rock art is attributed to the Ute culture. In includes a number of bighorn sheep, horses and dogs.

Frame Arch

Frame Arch is next to invisible when compared with the splendor of Delicate Arch just around the corner; most hikers barely even recognize the arch on its own merits. However, Frame Arch is famous for being the perfect window through which to photograph Delicate Arch, and many people use it to frame their shots of its more photogenic sibling, as its name suggests.

Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch has graced many magazine covers, mantle pieces, coffee tables, stamps, license plates, and a variety of other media. It is an international attraction, and has drawn its fair share of abuse over the years, including (now illegal) climbing, and ignorant pyrotechnics.

... "The plane is fixing," as one US Airways representative put it.

We were scheduled to depart San Juan on a Saturday 4:00 PM flight direct to Philadelphia. We dutifully cut short our lunch in old San Juan, got our taxi, retrieved our bags from the Isla Grande airport, went out to the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. Went through security, boarded the plane on time, but then just sat there - for about almost 3 hours, in a very warm airplane, because one of the engines was not working. Finally, they gave up trying to repair it, and we got off the plane. We spent about 3 hours in line waiting to talk to a US Airways representative about other flights or accommodations until the plane was repaired. A little before 11:00 PM, we finally talked to a clerk, who gave us a voucher to stay at El Conquistador, one of the most famous resort hotels in the Caribbean. We were then to depart on a 6:00 AM flight the next morning. But I asked the clerk if El Conquistador isn't at quite some distance from the airport. "Oh, no," she lied, "it's only 25 minutes this time of night." Of course, it took almost an hour to go out to the hotel, almost at midnight, when we'd be getting up at about 3:00 AM to get back to the airport for the 6:00 AM flight. Someone at US Airways apparently figured this out, or decided that they might not have the plane ready that early, so they moved the departure time back to 8:00 AM. So after a midnight dinner, which our food voucher didn't come close to covering, we got about 4 hours sleep, then boarded a bus back to the airport. It was dark during our entire visit to El Conquistador, so we never did see it. At the airport, again we went through security, but - surprise! - our 8:00 AM flight was indefinitely delayed. In this photo, you can see the mechanics toiling to repair the engine. (Or maybe it's 2 mechanics working and 3 other guys kibbutzing.) Finally, to get out of San Juan, we called the US Airways 1-800 number and booked onto a 1:00 PM flight. That flight, however, wasn't on time, don't ask me why. A little after 4:00 PM, we took off, had a very uneventful flight to Philadelphia, and arrived at almost 8:00 - almost exactly 25 hours late. It's always great to get home!

Park Avenue Trail

Length: 2 miles round trip

Difficulty: Easy.

Description: The Park Avenue Trail is one of the first major attractions within Arches National Park. It is a one-mile trail that follows the bottom of a canyon at the feet of some of the park’s gigantic, and well-known monoliths.

The Three Gossips, the Courthouse Towers, Queen Nefertiti and Queen Victoria Rock, the Organ, and the Tower of Babel are all visible from the road as visitors drive up towards Balanced Rock and Delicate Arch, but there is a large difference in experience when actually hiking through them. All of these natural wonders are famous and oft-photographed.

Park Avenue Trailhead

The lower trailhead is located on the Arches Entrance Road, 2.5 miles north of the visitors center, off to the north side of the road. The parking lot has a paved walkway that heads 320 feet to a Viewpoint. From there, there is a well-worn trail that heads down the Avenue and towards the Courthouse Towers Parking Lot.

The Courthouse Towers

The massive sandstone towers that make up the western background of Park Avenue are called the Courthouse Towers. Like the prows of enormous ships, these landmarks jut out into the desert below, some of them over 600 feet tall.

The Organ

The Organ is a smaller monolith just to the south of the Tower of Babel, off to the right side of the Arches Entrance Road. The Courthouse Towers parking lot sits off to the west flank of the Organ.

Courthouse Towers Trailhead

The upper trailhead is at the Courthouse Towers parking lot, off to the west flank of a rock structure known as The Organ.

The Tower of Babel

The Tower of Babel is located to the north of the Courthouse Towers, standing just above Courthouse Wash, north of the Organ and beside the Entrance Road.

In Hintonburg. Used to be a school run by nuns, now it's an employment centre as well as a place of resources for struggling people who have financial difficulties due to lack of employment, and a computer technology centre (for those older people who have yet to learn to use a computer).

It's 104 years old.

Iguazú Falls

• Length: 2.200 meters long (1913 yards) • Accessibility: high • Difficulty: none, without stairs. • Estimated time of visit: two hours. • Access to this trail is allowed until 05:00pm. • Restroom and bar: 20 meters away from the exit of the Circuit. The tour to reach the lookout balcony of the majestic Devil’s Throat allows visitors to approach a few meters from the most important and mighty waterfall of the Iguazu Falls, whose image has traveled all around the world, similar to a giant funnel that swallows the planet. The itinerary begins about 1,100 meters before the monumental fall, after getting off the Ecological Jungle Train at Devil’s Throat Station, which was designed with the purpose of generating the least possible environmental impact. There, you can begin enjoying the environment that the Iguazu River and its small islands offer, actually a refuge of countless and picturesque deep blue jays. The gangway leading to the balcony that faces the waterfall is just over a kilometer in length, is safe and quiet, either on wheelchair or by walking, due to the absence of obstacles and its absolutely flat character. The end of the tour, at the balcony, gives us a magical and unique moment, staring at a huge wall of water over 80 meters high, located on the border of Argentina and the sister Republic of Brazil. The folding system of gangways was designed to preserve them from being damaged due to an important increase in the flow of Iguazu River. In normal circumstances, when the river is low, the railings are raised and the gangways allow the people get to the Balcony of the Devil's Throat. When the river increases its flow, railings are fold to allow the flow to pass through, by reducing the resistance, and thereby also enabling to pass a trunk floating above. And if the river level is very high, the flow velocity increases, and that is the moment when the gangways detach themselves, to avoid compromising the concrete structure. Once the flow is down again, all the structure is reset. When this process eventually occurs, access is not enabled for people, but the Iguazu National Park never closes its doors, and those who are visiting us, can come to enjoy the splendor that acquire the rest of the falls when the river rises, due to an unusual majesty that can only be appreciated in opportunities like these. This system of gangways and security, proposed and approved by the National Parks Administration was possible because of the replacement of all the old wood gangways by these current ones, characterized by an ecological architectural development, and specially designed for for structural piles safeguard, preventing the circuit being closed long periods of time, as occured decades before.

lima was another place on my trip where i had difficulty leaving, not beacuse i liked it so much but just because i was stuck in an unmotivated rut - one of the less favourable ruts you can get stuck in. i remember that i was pleased to break this one morning and made it my mission to buy a bus ticket out of town. you could buy these at the hostel, but they were overpriced so i went about searching for one myself. i found a few companies close by who didn't go to my chosen destination, and they suggested some agencies downtown near the national stadium. for some reason i thought that it would be as simple as getting the metropolitano to the stadium and waltzing into a travel office. over two hours of aimless walking later the cold that i thought i'd shaken off had returned, my feet were sore and i was still lacking my ticket out of town. there was little that caught my eye on this long walk, with the exception of this roundabout. it was surrounded by grand, blue buildings and i immediately thought it would work well as a little planet. however i was tired and ill, and it was cold and dark, so it wasn't the right time to take pictures. i made a mental note to return here on my planned stop back through lima, and this is proof that i kept my promise. whilst processing it i was reminded why i never used to create print quality versions of my photos. the original photoshop file was pushing 2gb and it was painfully slow to make any changes. and there was a lot of processing to do - particularly on the buses and taxis. i perservered and despite it's imperfections it's now my favourite little planet, so i think it was worth the effort.

here's a smaller version

This is a route that goes all around the perimeter of the municipal area of L´Escala, with the exception of Cinclaus, going along the coastal strip and returning inland.

Technical Specifications

- Departure point: Cala Montgó

- Type of route: Round

- Distance: 18 km

- Time: 6 hours

- Difficulty: High (because of the distance involved)

To follow the route:

The route starts at Cala Montgó and from the beach itself you head towards L'Escala, along Carrer Trenca Braços, on the right, coinciding with the GR-92. Once at the top, in front of Illa Mateua Beach, in Carrer Punta Montgó, turn left to follow the sea, following the GR-92 markers. Go past the Punta dels Cinc Sous, Cala del Salpatx and Les Penyes until you get to Port de la Clota.

Then cross over the port by Carrer Romeu de Corbera, until you come to Riells Beach. At the beach, walk along Passeig del Petit Príncep until you get to Passeig del Mar, which takes you, following the coast, to the old centre of L'Escala. Carry along Passeig Lluís Albert and Port d'en Perris to La Platja. From La Platja (the main town beach) take Carrer Cargol and then Ronda Mar d'en Manassa, on your left, following the coastline. Go past La Creu small bay where you will see the fishermen's huts. This coastal path takes you to the place known as L’Oberta, from where you can see the beaches of Empúries. Walk along the Ronda del Pedró for about 200 metres and when you get to the Lampadòfor (the lamp bearer, the sculpture built to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic flame) turn right to take the Empúries Promenade.

The Empúries Promenade is two and a half kilometres long and runs parallel to the beaches of Empúries. It takes you past the Platja del Rec, Platja del Portitxol, Platja de les Muscleres and Platja del Moll Grec beaches, and you come to Sant Martí d'Empúries, which is the end of the route.

Go past the village of Sant Martí d'Empúries, heading south, taking the main road that leaves the village. From the same road, take the left at the first path you come to, and continue along this path towards Mas Sastruc. At the crossroads with Mas Sastruc, carry straight on and cross over the main road at its narrowest part. On the other side of the road, near the Tourist Information Office, take a path there is on the left that will take you to Les Corts farmhouses, signposted as "Camí de les Corts a Empúries", go between the farmhouses and turn left towards El Molí de L'Escala restaurant, until you come to Camp dels Pilans, in Carrer Muntanya Rodona. This will take you to a path that heads south, right at the edge of the houses. You will find a signpost that labels the path "Via Heraklea" and from here on, follow the livestock path which winds between the pine trees. You will come to the large pine tree known as Pi Gros, carry on towards the south until you reach the road to Bellcaire. Cross over this road and go into the car park of Els Recs farmhouses, from here go to the football pitch and take the path behind it heading south, until you get to Cortal Nou. From Cortal Nou, take the "Termes" Path heading east, go through the old sand quarry, following the green and white markers, cross over Carrer Punta Milà and following the perimeter of the campsites, you will get to the end of the route, Cala Montgó.

Others values:

The value of this route lies in the combination and variety of spaces and landscapes; on the one hand the route takes you along the coast, going past a large number of beaches and small bays and panoramic viewpoints. On the other hand, it takes you past farmhouses and along rural paths with great landscape and botanical interest.

Dutch postcard by Filmverhuurkantoor Centrafilm, Dordrecht. Caption: Bobbie Blake. This little Indian can be found with William Elliott in the film Lone Texas Ranger (Spencer Gordon Bennet, 1945) and with Monte Hale in Out California Way (Lesley Selander, 1946).

American film actor Robert Blake (1933-2023) started his career as a child actor under the names 'Mickey Gubitosi and 'Bobby Blake'. He gained a good deal of fame as the Indian sidekick Little Beaver in the Red Ryder series of Westerns. As an adult, he played killer Perry Smith in the film adaptation of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood (Richard Brooks, 1967) and the title role of Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (Abraham Polonsky, 1969). He gained his greatest fame through the title role in the police series Baretta (1975-1978). Then, Blake faded into obscurity until a one-off comeback as a 'mystery man' in Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997).

Robert Blake was born Michael Gubitosi. He made his film debut as a 5-year-old in the MGM production Bridal Suite (Wilhelm Thiele, 1939). Then, he appeared in some 40 short films in the Our Gang series, starting with Joy Scouts (Edward Cahn, 1939). The last was Dancing Romeo (Cy Endfield, 1944). As one of the more prominent children in the Gang, he gained attention for his cute good looks and his lovable, if somewhat melancholy, personality. He also starred in such full-length MGM films as I Love You Again (W.S. Van Dyke, 1940), Mokey (Wells Root, 1942), Andy Hardy's Double Life (George B. Seitz, 1942), and Lost Angel (Roy Rowland, 1943). Republic studio engaged Blake for the lead role of Little Beaver, Red Ryder's Indian sidekick, in the B-western Tucson Raiders (Spencer Gordon Bennet, 1944). He continued to play Little Beaver in all 22 remaining Red Ryder films, up to and including Marshall of Cripple Creek (R.G. Springsteen, 1947). Blake was often cast as an Indian, Mexican or Arab, like opposite Laurel & Hardy in The Big Noise (Malcolm St. Clair, 1944), opposite John Wayne in Dakota (Joseph Kane, 1945), and The Black Rose (Hathaway, 1950). In 1950, Blake entered military service. Though roles were sporadic as he grew to manhood, he was never long off the screen. His films included The Veils of Bagdad (George Sherman, 1953), Screaming Eagles (Charles F. Haas, 1956), Three Violent People (Rudolph Maté, 1957), and The Tijuana Story (Leslie Kardos, 1957).

In the early 1960s, Robert Blake appeared in Town Without Pity/Stadt ohne Mitleid (Gottfried Reinhardt, 1961), PT 109 (Milestone and Leslie H. Martinson, 1963), The Greatest Story Ever Told (as Simon the Zealot; George Stevens, 1965) and This Property Is Condemned (Sydney Pollack, 1966). His career took off with his stunning portrayal of killer Perry Smith in In Cold Blood (Richard Brooks, 1967), followed by the title role of Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (Abraham Polonsky, 1969) with Robert Redford. Blake, to whom is sometimes attributed the longest, more or less uninterrupted film career (1939-1997), starred in such films as Un uomo dalla pelle dura/The Boxer/Ripped-Off (Francesco Prosperi, 1972), Corky (Leonard J. Horn, 1972), Electra Glide in Blue (James William Guercio, 1973), Busting (Peter Hyams, 1974), Second-Hand Hearts (Hal Ashby, 1980), Coast to Coast (Joseph Sargent, 1980). Consumed with anger over his treatment by his family and the studio as a child, he denigrated his early work, suffered bouts of difficulty with drugs, and became known as a difficult, perfectionist person to work with. He quit his successful TV series Hell Town (1985) when his demons became overwhelming. After eight years, he returned to filming, and he appeared in Lost Highway (David Lynch, 1997), about a man who murders his wife. It was inspired, according to David Lynch, by the O.J. Simpson case. Blake himself became the centre of another high-profile wife-killing case in real life. In 2001, Blake was charged with murdering his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, but acquitted in 2005 for lack of evidence. Civil law did hold Blake liable for her death that same year and ordered him to pay $30 million in damages to her next of kin, resulting in his bankruptcy. His daughter, Rose Lenore Sophia Blake (with Bonnie Lee Bakley), was born in 2000. Quentin Tarantino dedicated the novelisation of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to Blake. The character Cliff Booth, played by Brad Pitt in the film, was partly inspired by him.

Eaglehawk Neck.

The dramatic coastline here shows the difficulties mariners faced reaching Hobart in the 19th century. There are caves and blow holes along the coast. The narrow isthmus which separates the Tasman Peninsula from the mainland shows why Port Arthur was such an easily defended prison site. The tessellated (tiled) pavement is unique in Australia. The flat sandstone here has fractured into rectangular tiles, which have then been eroded by water and waves. The fractures dry out at low tide allowing salt crystals to form which speeds up the erosion of the pan or tile surfaces, leaving the original fractures higher.
