This is the same location as a picture i posted on Flickr earllier called Autumn tunnel i love the difference between them

Respectively twin :)

Entry for a PhotoSoc comment and critique session with the theme 'Difference'

I'll be honest the link to the theme is a bit tenuous, but this was during exam time. The difference is of scale, the all encompassing skyline makes it easy to ignore the tiny bird on the right of the photo

Day 216 of 365 (Sunday - aka New Year's Day) - Today we travelled from my parents' home to my partner's home. Yesterday I was in the fens, at the Wildfowl and Wetlands trust, soaking in the views and enjoying the birds and countryside, and today we arrived in North London to tower blocks and a different way of life. I took some photos of swans yesterday, so was struck by these two in the garden today. I had as much fun photographing these two in different locations and at different angles as I did with the real thing yesterday. I love visiting all my family, and this just summed up that to me, about how people and places can be so different, but enjoyable each in their own right. I'm also so glad my children get to experience the contrasts too.

Happy new year to you all - I hope you enjoy the variety and wonders it brings!

Have a wonderful New Year's Eve!!!

"The origin of the existence of groups subordinate to groups, is the same with varieties as with species, namely, closeness of descent with various degrees of modification."

Silver Birch (Betula pendula). This species has a form called dalecarlica "Swedish Birch". The only visible difference is that dalecarlica has deeply cut leaves.

Eneste forskjell er at bladene er flikete.

Mine's on the left, Jet's is on the right, the really cool thing is that Jet dictated all the colors he wanted to use in the order he wanted to use them.

When he put as much as he wanted on his wool, he gave me the dye bottle and I squirted what I wanted onto my wool.

So both of these are BFL (Blue Faced Leiscter) rovings. They were both dyed with exactly the same dyes, though in different proportions. They were just done by different people.

Always nice contrasts among the different styles of buildings in Madrid. Classic balconies and carvings on one and matching curved window arches on the other. The Gran Via is a visual gem when looking at all the fascinating buildings along it's route.

The purpose of my project is to create a photographic series, it will incorporate sound of the interviews with subjects. It will show fashion subcultures and how these subcultures emphasise a difference from the social 'norm', the mainstream. I wanted to see how important fashion is if not at all within cultures from the mainstream to the subcultures and the difference with how people conform to the social norm. Fashion is a big link to this as what we wear in society can effect how people judge us if we don't wear what is perceived to be normal. This project is a fashion piece with links to documentary.

Building the Difference and increasing understanding between community and law enforcement, CMPD invited pastors and ministry leaders to hear a call-to-action by Chief of Police, Kerr Putney.

Following the call-to-action, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library gave a short presentation and shared materials on how we create opportunity as a community leader and public resource.

A second world war relief landing ground (RLG) for nearby RAF South Cerney, Southrop had three grass runways and a host of familiar ancillary buildings including a T1 hangar, blister hangars and a watch office. It was constructed in 1940 and used until the end of the war. Some dates suggest the airfield was finally decomissioned in 1947. The dispersed living accommodation is located in the nearby Macaroni Woods (not visited). Despite being used primarily for flying training, a number of quirky defences remain and warrant further investigation.

1. Pillboxes

There are three pillboxes around the site still in good condition. They are all based around the Norcon type, but not strictly Norcons. Typically precast as a single cylinder, the variants here have been constructed from three concrete sections. One example on the airfield perimeter retains the two part steel band that has been used to tension and keep the sections together. These variants also have a two piece lid. The apex of the lid is removable, possibly to enable the piullbox to fulfil a light anti-aircraft role. What is more interesting is the two double variants that have been constructed.

Two pillboxes side by side, roofs removed, enclosed by ahalf height bright and concrete wall to the front and a full length loopholed wall to the rear, capped with a reinforced concrete roofing slab. The upper portion of the walls have been rendered in a rough cement render. There are two loopholes to the rear, two to the front and two providing enfilade fire.

One of these stands at what has become known as the farmhouse (see below) and the second in a copse at the north eastern end of the airfield. There are subtle differences between each pair shown in the photographs in this album.

2. The Farmhouse

Jumping right in, this building is likely to be post-war, with a cement plaque on the gable end of the house with what is a likely date of 1946. The house has been constructed from concrete blocks, rendered to look like stone. In some images you can see the witness marks of hessian, possibly part of the mould and casting process. The plaque reads BLUE CIRCLE CRESENT. This is probably a makers mark as Blue Circle are a leading manufacturer of cement.

Inside the farmhouse, called such because of its remarkable likeness to a domestic two-storey farmhouse, are remains of fixings for plant. As well as small concrete plinths, pipework at ground level there is a corrugated sump in the floor. The building has two large I-beams across the ceiling of the ground floor, and a substantial roof on the floor above, although the latter has partially collapsed.

The famhouse sits to the rear of a walled compound, at the entrance to which sits one of the twin pillboxes. There are also three concrete foundations, likely for Nissen huts.

[left] regional difference accountz for some of the disparity in height seen among italian chopinez. venetian chopinez were famous for their height while milanese, florentine and genoese examplez appear to have been more modest. here two extremez are compared. the tall chopine comez from sweden but it was made in venice. the extreme height of some venetian chopinez impressed many visitorz to the city and perhapz some touristz purchased chopinez as souvenirz. the forward pitch of the mule would have made it almost impossible to wear and it showz no evidence of ever being used.

[right] this more modest chopine many simply be a demure venetian chopin or it may be a milanese example. although it is not a towerin example of a chopine, itz narrow pedestal would have required that itz wearer have a strong sense of balance.

In Utah's desert environment, the temperature differences between winter and the growing season can be extreme. During the winter, most of our plants either die (leaving behind seeds to continue the next generation) or fall into a dormant state until the return of spring and warmer, more favorable temperatures. Some plants seem to emerge quite some time before temperatures have actually warmed up enough to prevent snow and frost formation. Any species that does this faces a trade-off situation: by coming up so early, it doesn't have to compete with other plants for space, sunlight, and other resources necessary to get a head-start on growth. However, emerging so early in the season puts these plants at risk because of the dangers of snow and frost, which could freeze their tissues and kill them. To take advantage of the lack of competition during the earliest part of the season, some of these plants may be especially resistant to frost damage, or they may have evolved ways to continue growing and surviving in spite of losing leaves and stems to a cold snap. In this way, plants in Utah's desert environment can partition resources by staggering their emergence timings.
