There is quite a size difference between Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, yet their plumage is all but identical. This makes them quite difficult to identify from photographs where there is nothing to give scale. Greater Yellowlegs usually has an almost imperceptibly slight upturn to the bill. But when you see the two species together the size difference is like that between Greenshank and Redshank. The bill is also relatively longer and stouter in Greater Yellowlegs, so more like a Greenshank. Incidentally, DNA studies reveal that it is more closely related to Greenshank than Lesser Yellowlegs. Both species of Yellowlegs breed across the boreal forest zone of Canada, but Lesser Yellowlegs peters out around Hudson Bay so does not reach the Atlantic coast. Puzzlingly Lesser Yellowlegs is much, much more common as a vagrant in Britain compared with Greater Yellowlegs, yet Greater breeds right up to the Atlantic Coast. Both species winter in the southern States and throughout South America. I photographed this Greater feeding on the shore at Port Hardy on Vancouver Island.

Due to the absence of morphological or meristic differences, this species was believed to be a disjunct population of the Hawaiian Cirrhitops fasciatus, until DNA analysis revealed species-level differences in 2008.

A foggy morning at low tide. Given that the Bay of Fundy has the world's highest tides, it's not surprising that we have North America's only tidal generation power station right in Annapolis Royal. This image shows the downstream section of the Annapolis river at the mouth of the bay; the white is foam, not ice, although it's often difficult to tell the difference. It's somehow comforting to know that much of the town's power comes from the ebb and flow of the tide, creating a tiny footprint - the plant itself is very small and very low-tech. It has been operating since 1984.

Following building the C-2A(R) Greyhound I thought I'd build the mother of it being the E-2C Hawkeye. A few BrickLink orders allowed me to finish the fine details in this aircraft. The differences between the Greyhound and Hawkeye allowed me to improve features on which are shared and trial new techniques that I have found.

As the evening began to kick in the pair of Stone Curlew (Burhinus oedicnemus insularum) got more active, giving some stunning views in the process, in stark contrast to the distant views we can get of the ones that breed in the UK.

It was even possible to see the subtle differences between the male and female they were so close

“Things change everyday, ... With each new dawn it’s not the same world as the day before. And you’re not the same person you were, either.”

Imagine if you were unable to touch or kiss your newborn baby. This is an ordeal thousands of families, whose child arrives too soon, too small or too sick, are forced to go through each year. But you can help. By baking and selling cupcakes, you’ll be raising funds to help support families during what can be a very lonely and frightening time, and to provide a brighter future for their babies.

Some facts and figures:

• There is a shortage of 1,150 nurses to care for the 70,000 babies in need of specialist hospital care in England. Less than a third of units have enough nurses to meet minimum standards.

• Neonatal units are working way above recommended occupancy levels meaning there is no safety net for peaks in the number of babies being admitted to units.

• Families of babies admitted to specialist hospital care face a crippling financial strain on top of the normal costs of having a new baby.

• Over half of parents face the prospect of not being able to stay near their baby in hospital due to a shortage of overnight rooms for families.

Cake A Difference is the annual fundraising initiative from Bliss, the special care baby charity. Bliss offers guidance and information at a critical time in families' lives, funds ground-breaking research and campaigns for babies to receive the best possible level of care regardless of when and where they are born. Cake A Difference 2011 takes place from 14-20 February 2011. For more ideas on how you can support Bliss contact katiaw@bliss.org.uk

I had a lot of fun in the forest this past time around. Well, fun is not the right word for the experience. It is not like I was jumping around hollering and grinning from ear-to-ear. Yet I was happy. Very happy with where I was and what I was doing. There is a calm to an old forest that you don't find anywhere, not even at the edge of an ocean (which isn't so calm as it is patient, and there is a difference there). Old forests like this have a calm that leeches out the helter skelter of our fast-paced lives, and trust me, compared to a tree, our lives are very fast-paced indeed.

This is DMU 156411 with the newly painted East Midlands Railways Regional name but not repainted yet into the new livery at Newark Castle Station on the Lincoln to Nottingham route. It is hard to tell the difference but I suppose that it does have hundreds of units to repaint! It was only recently that a new franchise took over the East Midlands Railway network from East Midlands Trains.

Class 156 Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) are one of the Super Sprinter classes.

This is the church where five generations of my maternal family have been christened, married and buried. I was the last to be christened in this church, my parents the last to be married and my grandparents the last to be buried.

Four years ago, when I went on my "Family Story" expedition, the church was hidden by dark, depressing yew trees.

(See the inset)

Four weeks ago I was surprised and delighted to see they had gone!

I would appreciate a Real critique on this image flickr friends - if you hate it please say so and why! if it should be a different colour - if the colour 'sucks' etc etc. I have been invited to provide up to six images for a little village art display in December - I am just trying to come up with something that the public might like and is a bit different. Thank you and Happy Shooting to you all :))

I am not generally a fan of birdfeeder photos but I found this one rather striking. Taken from one of the many blinds at Slimbridge Wetlands, these Eurasian Blue Tits were about as abundant there as their cousins, the chickadee and tufted titmouse, are here in the northeastern US. As woodland birds, they nest in tree holes and generally eat insects, but at certain times of the year they will also eat seeds and nuts. Studies, which I have not reviewed, suggest that they are not as sexually monomorphic as they might seem. Apparently, observed under the UV spectrum, males and females demonstrate differences in the colors of their tufts. This difference allows them to easily distinguish sexes. There's a world of difference out there that we don't even see, hear, taste, or smell, due to the limitations of our senses. Imagine the possibilities! #EurasianBlueTit

This little Stoat has recently been put in the enclosure on show to the public and it is just gorgeous.

Just like a normal Stoat it will wiz around so fast you can just about see it, but the difference with this one is it will suddenly pose for you for quite a long time.

I stood watching it for hours (yes I know how sad) and loads of people got great shots.

Evie Field won the first prize in the spot the difference competition here at Pinhoe Library during the summer holidays, she won the telescope and a M@x goody bag.

Well done Evie!

Solo Chase Day & Close to Home....

Luv it when the chases are in my backyard. Not having to drive 3 states and 1200 miles in 1 day is relief. I know I'm not the only chaser that says that. This was a phenomenal afternoon of severe weather. When I say this... It means that its photogenic & for the most part not effecting the farms, agriculture, livestock & the human element.

Mammatus before the storm, then I decided to bail on this first storm for the next which was to the north about 25 miles. This storm had wicked good rotation under the base. Even though it was high based it was producing some freakin awesome views.

The storm had overtaken my position and I had a 40 min drive to get back in front of this storm. It was on my tail the whole way back to the I-80 corridor. Though a little late I was still able to get back in front of shelf cloud. The teeth on the outflow were almost scraping the ground. It gave the effect of a funnel but it was not. Been doing this to long to make sure I know the difference.

That was a hoot. Though I waited til the last minute. I got swallowed by the core & had to wait it out. Want to see what its like out in the open with no shelter... This I have also done a billion times. 50mph winds rocked my truck! That was fun!

Finally, I blazed it backed to Kearney for this Storms Finale... Beautiful Sunset light illuminates the exiting storm with a Anvil Rain & Mammatus Cluster ... It was truly a Sight to See!!!!
