The difference between a "Burg" and a "Schloss" (castle) is that a Burg is more like a fortress, built for protection from the enemies, and a Schloss was for the nobility to reside in, and very lavishly decorated.
Over time, some of the Burgs were also turned into castles.
Burg Eltz is somewhat unusual, in that it's been in the same family that had it built over 850 years ago, and Count and Countess Eltz still live there today.

Some of you may have noticed that the last few shots I've uploaded were all captured on the same day.
That was our summer holiday....
We spent a week up north - 6/7ths of which were blessed with horizontal rain but we were lucky enough to get one freakishly good day which we made the most of, but by late afternoon, the next front of low pressure was upon us.
Even my B&W shot of the boat at Inverasdale had to be cleaned up to remove a few rain spots from the filter.
Someone once said that the only difference between a Scottish summer and a Scottish winter is that the rain is warmer.
This view, with obligatory bonnie purple heather in the foreground, is taken looking out across Loch Ewe with Aultbea and Mellon Charles on the right.
I'm still amazed at how blue the sky and water is. No polarizer used, just a medium grey grad for balance and a bit of cloud structure.
Our last day and last shot of summer.

The Flame-faced Tanager is one of the most spectacular members of the diverse and exceptionally colorful genus Tangara. Living up to its common name, the forehead begins as a deep glimmering red, shading into a brilliant yellow on the nape and sides of the head. This "flame" contrasts sharply with the jet black back. The Flame-faced Tanager is a common member in mixed species foraging flocks in the canopy of humid montane forest from the Andes of extreme southwest Venezuela south to central Peru. It forages exclusively along mossy branches and occasionally peering at the underside in search of arthropods. There are three subspecies of the Flame-faced Tanager, described based mostly on minor differences in plumage. The species is typically found from 1000-2600 m and is most numerous above 1500 m. The IUCN Red list assesses the Flame-faced Tanager as a species of Least Concern; however, the population size is declining due to habitat destruction. Thus, the Flame-faced Tanager should become the focus of future studies.

This lovely origami model is called "Rain Star" or in Spanish "Estrella de la Lluvia", because when it was created by Aldo Marcell it was raining ;-)
I wanted to see what the difference is when I changed the color, so that's why you see 2 variations, I like them both....which one has your preference?
I put them on a mirror so you can see at the same time the other site.

The Zagreb Funicular connects the city's Lower Town with the historic Upper Town. Its 66-metre (217 ft) track makes it one of the shortest public-transport funiculars in the world. The funicular was built in 1890 and has been in operation since April 23, 1893. Initially it had steam engines, which were substituted with electrical engines in 1934.
The funicular runs on a 1,200 mm (3 ft 11 1⁄4 in) gauge track, track length is only 66 m (217 ft), but height difference is 30.5 m (100 ft) and inclination 52%. This makes it one of the shortest, but also one of the steepest funiculars in the world. It runs at a speed of 1.5 m/s (4.9 ft/s), needing 55 seconds to cross the distance. (from Wikipedia)

I overlaid layers of various images on top of pictures of trucks & motors useing a difference filter on all of da snaps which kept da colors simililar
I then collaged da photos usein 7 different photos
then overlaided 3D Fractal objects on top
kinda of like a collage of a collage
all of da images are trucks motors and cargo
(I might do more--was so much fun doin dis one)
this stepped pyramid is an old tool that one can place a lawn mower blade on after sharpening to see if it will be balanced to run, I use it for many things since it spins so freely. 3/8 washer taking a ride. the edges step out for larger holes. The pyramid floats on a nail point inside so the slightest difference makes it list to one side.
The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region.
Highland cattle descend from the Hamitic Longhorn, which were brought to Britain by Neolithic farmers in the second millennium BC, as the cattle migrated northwards through Africa and Europe. Highland cattle were historically of great importance to the economy, with the cattle being raised for meat primarily and sold in England.
The 1885 herd book describes two distinct types of Highland cattle. One was the West Highland, or Kyloe, originating and living mostly in the Outer Hebrides, which had harsher conditions. These cattle tended to be smaller, to have black coats and, due to their more rugged environment, to have long hair. These cattle were named due to the practice of relocating them. The kyles are narrow straits of water, and the cattle were driven across them to get to market.
The other type was the mainland; these tended to be larger because their pastures provided richer nutrients. They came in a range of colours, most frequently dun or red. These types have now been crossbred so that there is no distinct difference.
Since the early 20th century, breeding stock has been exported to many parts of the world, especially Australia and North America.
It is estimated that there are now around 15,000 Highland cattle in the United Kingdom.
I have to ask my Flickr Friends what sense does it make in spending this vast amount of money on politics when we need it for life globally and here in the USA whether it be food, drink, health, climate change and war amongst other things? Are all the dollars really worth it? Can democracy really be bought? How much difference do the dollars actually make?

Finally! A sunny, winter day with lovely fresh snow. We received about a foot of snow last night and so we headed out to get some photos before the wind knocked all the snow off. The temperature was -13C, but with the wind it was more like -25C. A bit crisp, but the sun made it all good.
Driving through the snow, the car smoothed and compacted the snow between the wheel ruts, but we had no problems. Snow tires and AWD make a big difference.

My guess is that this little guy was in fact a Solitary Sandpiper, actually this shot almost lines up with the allabout birds shot! Funny how similar they look to Lesser Yellow Legs - the only real difference in my uneducated opinion being size. I love the warm golden early morning light in this photo.
Shot in august 2022 and reprocessed on 11/16/2023. I like the new version much more than the old one. One addition year in processing can make a difference.

This is a fall female and you can see the differences from the previous post. She is a rather dull female so she could be a first fall bird as sometimes it is hard to age this species. Notice the uniform brownish appearance of the face patch without any black along the upper and/posterior edge as you would be expected in a first fall male. First fall males also tend to have more black in the plumage dorsally. I did a more distant crop to bring in some of the early fall yellows in the leaves. My settings were a bit much here but in early morning with different lighting around and rapidly changing lighting with different birds in a flock moving around sometimes you just have to grab the shot with what you have.
If this garage was in a Jewish neigbourhood 'Ah Wai' would be out of business as 'Oy Vey' is a cry indicating dismay, disappointment or grief. I was also intrigued by the samurai painted on the door for protection.

It is a member of the bird family Columbidae (doves and pigeons). In common usage, this bird is often simply referred to as the pigeon. The domestic pigeon descended from this species. Escaped domestic pigeons have raised the populations of feral pigeons around the world. Wild rock doves are pale grey with two black bars on each wing, whereas domestic and feral pigeons vary in colour and pattern. Few differences are seen between males and females. The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per brood. Both parents care for the young for a time. Habitats include various open and semi-open environments. Cliffs and rock ledges are used for roosting and breeding in the wild. Originally found wild in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, pigeons have become established in cities around the world. We seem to be getting dangerously close to world war! Is it worth it???? Do you have any idea how many people lose everything and are left in complete and utter misery? Why can we not find a way to sit down and discuss our situation, without the power of money and greed? It is beyond time to find a solution and if we don't we have no-one to blame other than ourselves!!

Note the eye size difference between these chicks, born about a week apart. The food the parent is offering appears to be a dragonfly nymph.
