This weekend the steam locomotive 26.26 has made its first official journey with passengers after its restoration! BDZ organized several Christmas trains to Bankya with this old lady and also on the narrow gauge railway to Velingrad. As always there were a lot of interest for the trains and despite the bad weather, many enthusiats went to ride or just to see the retro locomotives. On the photo steam loco 26.26 is waiting at Bankya station while the modern Siemens train is ready for departure with the noon service towards Sofia. Interesting fact is that there are exactly 100 years difference between those two railway units! Steam locomotive 26.26 of BDZ was made in 1908 and the Siemens Desiro EMU has been assembled in 2008.

In case if you are interested in railway videos, you can watch and listen this old steam locomotive here:

The Common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), also known as the Robust Chimpanzee, is a great ape. The name troglodytes, Greek for 'cave-dweller', was coined by Johann Friedrich Blumenbach in his Handbuch der Naturgeschichte (Handbook of Natural History) published in 1779. Colloquially, it is often called the chimpanzee (or simply 'chimp'), though technically this term refers to both species in the genus Pan: the Common Chimpanzee and the closely-related Bonobo, or Pygmy Chimpanzee.

Common Chimpanzees are found in the tropical forests and wet savannas of Western and Central Africa. They once inhabited most of this region, but their habitat has been dramatically reduced in recent years.

Human and Common Chimpanzee DNA is very similar. The DNA sequence differences between humans and chimpanzees is about thirty-five million single-nucleotide changes, five million insertion/deletion events, and various chromosomal rearrangements. Typical human and chimp protein homologs differ in only an average of two amino acids. About 30% of all human proteins are identical in sequence to the corresponding chimp protein. Duplications of small parts of chromosomes have been the major source of differences between human and chimp genetic material; about 2.7% of the corresponding modern genomes represent differences, produced by gene duplications or deletions, during the approximately four to six million years since humans and chimps diverged from their common evolutionary ancestor.

CASTELLANO

A walk in the Woods series.

The darkened path here leading us into the trees who are still clinging to some of their autumn gowns, I also quite like the differences in the shades of the path, combined with the textures and colours of the woodland floor acting as a foundation for the beautiful ancient beech and other trees as it winds between them.

A commonly used path in our neighbouring village of Insch, Aberdeenshire, Northeast Scotland.

The light was quite good on this wonder through the trees a little subdued by high and distant clouds from time to time but it lacked that strong gold of a really glowing evening so I shall return soon when the light is stronger.

"The biggest difference is propulsion or movement. House boats are in fact - boats. They can be moved from place to place and have their own means of propulsion and navigation. They have seaworthy hulls, engines and fuel. Floating homes are a house built on a floating apparatus, and are unable to move without help."

----------------------------- JESUS ✝️ SAVES-------------------------------

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST - ALONE!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the SALVATION of everyone WHO BELIEVES: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel a RIGHTEOUSNESS FROM GOD IS REVEALED, a righteousness that is by FAITH FROM FIRST TO LAST, just as it is written: "THE RIGHTEOUS WILL LIVE BY FAITH." (Romans 1:16-17)

16 KNOW that a man is NOT justified by observing the law, but by FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be JUSTIFIED BY FAITH in CHRIST and NOT by observing the law, BECAUSE BY OBSERVING THE LAW NO ONE WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Galatians 2:16)

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

1 Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. 4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses describes in this way the righteousness that is by the law: "The man who does these things will live by them." 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 "or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:1-13)

Jesus came to bring spiritual LIFE to the spiritually dead and set the captives FREE! FREE from RELIGION, ERROR and outright LIES, so WE might serve THE LIVING GOD! In SPIRIT and in TRUTH!

So you'll KNOW, and not think you're to bad for God to love. The Christian LIFE isn't about how good WE are, because NONE of us are! It's about how GOOD JESUS IS! Because JESUS LOVES US, so much he died in our place and took the punishment for all of our sins on himself. The wages of sin is DEATH, and Jesus took the death WE so richly deserved for us and died in our place. The good news is, there's no more punishment for sin left. WE, you and I were all born forgive as a result of the crucifixion of God himself on the cross that took away the sins of the whole world. All we have to do is believe it, and put your Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ. That my friends is REAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE! YOU ARE LOVED. ❤️ ✝️ ❤️

What a difference a week makes. Just when our Barn Owls are up against it trying to supply their hungry young ones with plenty of voles...we get hit by high winds and torrential rain making it near impossible for them to hunt effectively.

Fingers crossed this weather front is short lived and we soon have calmer days again.

The difference even a few minutes can make.

This was shot on the same evening as the other one I posted yesterday. This one was shot with a different, faster lens that was a different brand.

This was shot at f.2.8 at 24mm and a shutter speed of 10 seconds from a sturdy tripod.

There are a number of factors to keep in mind when shooting the Milky Way. One is that shutter speed really matters. It is dark, so the photographer needs to keep the shutter open longer to let in more light. But if it is open too long then you get star streaks because the earth is constantly moving.

Tripod sturdiness is also a factor. With a long exposure like this, any vibration at all can mess up the image. It was slightly windy and I had to block the wind with my body. It was more successful at some times than others.

The wider aperture let in more light and I found that it also has more of the fainter stars. There was also some not really fog but a bit of a haze that seemed to come and go.

Finally, the camera's dynamic range - -the range from pure white to pure black -- isn't as wide as the human eye. How much so varies between cameras, and newer ones tend to have more range. This means the initial image taken will not look like what the eye saw. The photographer can choose to use JPG settings in which the camera tries to adjust the image. Or, the photographer can shoot in RAW and make the adjustments manually.

Good grief! This made Explore Front Page! (Thanks for letting me know)

“THE WET” AND “THE DRY” IN THE NORTHERN AUSTRALIAN TROPICS

The Northern Tropics of Australia in the Darwin region are described as having only 2 seasons – the “wet season” (or simply “The Wet”) (broadly November to April) and the “dry season” (or simply “The Dry”) (May to October). There is no local designation of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, although it should be noted that some ancient local indigenous calendars describe up to 8 seasons, categorised by not only weather but also flowering and fruiting of edible plants, appearance of migratory animals as food sources, river heights, etc.

While Europeans settled Darwin in the 1860s, indigenous Australians have occupied the area for at between 40,000 and 60,000 years.

In broad terms, the main differences between the Wet and the Dry relate to humidity levels, prevailing wind direction, and (as the names imply) rain, or the absence of rain.

Darwin has no frost, no snow and no hail.

Darwin is also largely flat and unelevated, with few locations exceeding 30 metres above sea level.

Darwin is located 12 degrees south of the equator, in the middle of the cyclone belt.

THE WET – NOVEMBER TO APRIL

During the Wet, temperatures range from a minimum of 27 – 28C overnight (sometimes not dropping below 30C) and 34 – 36C during the day. Humidity levels are in the range of 75 – 95%.

The prevailing monsoon wind direction is from the North West (i.e. from the Timor Sea), except during the frequent storms, which normally come from the South East.

Cyclones (the local name for a typhoon or hurricane) also form during the Wet as part of monsoon trough activity. The wind from a cyclone can come from any direction, depending on the relationship between the cyclone’s eye and the observer’s position.

Rainfall during the Wet approaches 2,000 mm; with the record for a 6 month Wet season period being 3,000 mm.

Sea temperature during the Wet is around 32C.

Towards the end of the wet season there are almost daily storms with strong winds from the south-east, generally late in the late afternoon. These storms are called “knock-em-downs” as they flatten the 2 metre tall native spear grass which covers all uncleared areas. The spear grass will eventually die off and a large proportion of it will burn in dry season grass fires. The spear grass seeds are a staple diet of many finches and parrots. The spear grass re-germinates when the first storms arrive in October or November.

THE DRY – MAY TO OCTOBER

During the Dry, temperatures range from a typical minimum of 20 - 21C overnight (on rare occasions dropping to 16C) and 30 -31C during the day. Humidity levels are in the range of 10 - 30%.

The prevailing wind direction is from the South East (i.e. from the direction of the Great Australian Desert); with an occasional light North West sea breeze rising in the late afternoon.

There is virtually no rain between April and October.

Because of the absence of rain, a high bushfire danger exists throughout the area during the Dry, with the highest risk occurring in August and September, before the next Wet season storms occur. During these months, the humidity is very low and the South East winds are at their strongest – up to 30 knots (around 55 km/hr).

Bushfire smoke blows out to sea and causes spectacular sunset effects.

I posted a similar shot of this discharge tower at the Craigmaddie Reservoir about 8 months ago. Since then some alterations & maintenance has been done. The A frame removed & metalwork repainted. This was taken on Tuesday & there was (very unusually) a significant police presence. Given the subsequent news that a woman’s body had been found in Glasgow that morning & police were searching this area for a missing man. Today (Thursday) comes the news that they have found a man’s body in one of these reservoirs & the police suspect a murder/ suicide. Scary - I might have been there when this was happening. I saw nothing.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life. ~Steve Jobs

After the successful test flight of the RSS Pale Blue Dot a second faster-than-light spaceship was built. The RSS Mote Of Dust had her maiden flight on August 8th, 2349.

People might say that the main difference between those spaceships are improvements in my building skills, but this chart clearly shows the huge technical advancements.

The difference in size between the larger, newer K-36 and the smaller, older K-27 classes is very apparent as #488 backs into the engine house while #463 looks on. #488 will have its fire cleaned and banked for the night, as well as an inspection after its 64 mile run from Chama to Antonito. #463 was staged in town for a photo charter that would take place later that week. A former UTLX tank car is present as well, now apparently used to store fuel for oil burners #487 and #489.

The Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission takes us over Lake Mar Chiquita – an endorheic salt lake in the northeast province of Córdoba, Argentina.

Lake Mar Chiquita, around 70 km long and 24 km wide, is fed primarily by the Primero and Segundo rivers from the southwest and from the Dulce river from the north. While these rivers flow into the lake, there isn’t a natural outflow of water so it only loses water by evaporation, hence Lake Mar Chiquita being described as an endorheic lake. The lake’s surface area, as well as its salinity, varies considerably (ranging between 2000 and 6000 sq km), although it is slowly diminishing in size owing to evaporation.

Several small islands lie in the lake, the most important of which is El Médano. Vast expanses of saline marshes can be seen on the lake’s northern shore. The lake has been designated as a Ramsar Site of International Importance, and is considered one of the most important wetlands in Argentina owing to its rich biodiversity. Over 25 species of fish are known to breed in Lake Mar Chiquita, with fishing and livestock being the principal land uses.

The colours of this week’s image come from the combination of two polarisations from the Sentinel-1 radar mission, which have been converted into a single image.

As radar images provide data in a different way than a normal optical camera, the images are usually black and white when they are received. By using a technology that aligns the radar beams sent and received by the instrument in one orientation – either vertically or horizontally – the resulting data can be processed in a way that produces coloured images such as the one featured here. This technique allows scientists to better analyse Earth’s surface.

Shades of blue in the image show us where the differences between the two polarisations are higher, for example the saline marshes in the lake’s north, whereas the crops and agricultural fields in the surrounding area appear yellow, indicating fewer differences between polarisations. Fields, such as those visible in the bottom-left corner of the image, appear blue most likely because they are wetter. Several villages, including San Francisco and Rafaela, are identifiable in white in the bottom-right of the image.

This image, acquired on 17 November 2020, is also featured on the Earth from Space video programme.

Found across much of North America, the Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) is a common sight in many a pond and river, often sunning itself cheerily atop outcrops and shores. And they have every reason to be cheery; they're handsome, abundant, and liked the country over. They're so abundant that separate subspecies have developed with clear morphological differences. Today, we recognize the Midland Painted Turtle (photographed here) and the Eastern, Southern, and Western Painted Turtles.

Want to know how to tell apart gentlemen and lady painted turtles? Look for the ones that have claws like Freddy Krueger--they're the men. They use their long claws during courtship displays, waving them at their potential mates underwater to show their masculinity and virility!
