Matchbox "The Dinky Collection" No. DY-5

1989

The last time I bought any Suntoys diecasts was way back in December 2016 when Wilkinsons were clearing their stocks of licensed castings to make way for horrid HTI generics. Their el cheapo range and newer overly generic castings can still be found here but absolutely nothing of interest. That was until today! Smyths Toys appear to be slowly moving away from using Pioneer as their budget in house range and replacing them with more Suntoys. This Police car caught my eyes immediately whilst in their store as unbelievably its a VERY thinly disguised Lada 110! Whether or not its a Welly copy is up for debate but apart from its blanked out rear side windows this is actually a decent if somewhat obscure representation right down to its slab sided styling. Part of a new Revz Emergency Response four vehicle set. Mint and boxed.

No. 2/20 Moving Parts 2021

Toy Champ, Rotterdam

This beautiful almost untouched charity shop found Welly 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has been a bit of an eye opener for me. I had assumed that all older Welly castings from the 1970's to the 1990's were completely unlicensed with no official manufacturers approval yet this lovely slice of yellow loveliness does indeed have the Corvette name on its baseplate.

Not quite in the same league as modern era Welly 1/64 castings yet just as well cast and finished as an equivalent Hot Wheels.

Thanks Mikaela for finding this little gem :-)

Scottish Citylink launched the “Gold” service in 2010, on services between Glasgow, Aberdeen & Inverness. Intended as a more luxurious travel experience, Gold offered free wifi, leather seats and free refreshments and were staffed by both Driver and a passenger Attendant.

Services to Edinburgh would be added and the following routes offered; G9 Glasgow - Aberdeen. G10 Glasgow - Aviemore - Inverness. G90 Edinburgh- Perth- Pitlochry- Aviemore- Inverness. G92 Edinburgh-Halbeath-Dundee-Aberdeen.

Citylink withdrew the Gold service in March 2020, instead joining with Megabus to provide the “6 Cities” brand.

This is a code 3 of the 1:76 scale, Oxford Diecast, Scania Irizar. Finished with the Sunrise transfer set for Scottish Citylink Gold.

This model had sat, half done, on a shelf for years. I had completed one previously, but wasn’t happy with the gold paint.

This weekend I completed the second. I am particularly thrilled with the transfers, by Sunrise, the “Gold” lettering actually shimmers under light.

Here is a updated copy of the 1930 Ford Tudor where I change the background by using a gobo to keep the background color from bleeding onto the model. I like this image much better because it keeps your attention on the car and not so much on the background.

Yatming may no longer be in the business of making diecast models but their legacy still lives on in the millions of examples of their products which are still around, many in the hands of enthusiastic collectors. From their Matchbox competing roots in the 1970's they ended up being a major player in the more expensive large scale adult aimed models and garnered a very good reputation along the way.

They never forgot their 1/64 budget roots though and continued to offer various castings from the damn right basic to their last gasp of licensed editions for which this Lexus IS 250 is included. Here in the U.K.they were often found either under the German Dickie Toys brand or in Wilkinsons where they were briefly sold under the house brand as sub Mattel fodder before being replaced by HTI licensed castings after Yatming ended production.

This Lexus isn't quite to Matchbox standards but at the time was a perfectly acceptable budget alternative along with the other castings in this series such as a Jaguar XK Coupe and Aston Martin DB9. Accurate for a cheapie with enough detailing to satisfy the Lexus licensors its a much missed range who's place has inevitably been taken by HTI generics!

A recent charity shop gift.

With very little diecasts worth buying in UK shops at the moment I have taken to online ensuring a healthy mix of different brands for my collection. I'm a big fan of Greenlight American themed vans and for me this is my first foray into their GMC Vandura casting which is crisply cast, well detailed and wearing a bright licensed Union 76 livery. Mint and boxed.

I have literally masses of this casting in basic Mainline form so much do I love it yet until now hadn't got the realistic opportunity in experiencing its more premium side. Its latest Door Slammers guise has officially come to the UK thanks to Smyths Toys and by sheer luck I was able to grab the last one from the only store nearest to me which has either stocked this range or completely sold out!

Its svelte and handsome styling has definitely stood the test of time and was pretty much the blueprint for all BMW 3 Series saloons which came after it. It looks great in basic form and pretty sensational in premium guise thanks to its all metal construction, Real Rider wheels and a truly beautiful paint finish. Not cheap at 6.99 each but that price point hasn't stopped it from being a sell out! Mint and boxed.

When this fantastic range of diecasts costs just 66p its easy to get a bit carried away especially as I already have a lot of these 2013 batch models many times over! This Honda CRZ is the perfect example of why I love the products of Majorette so much and why its so disappointing their newer products arn't available here! Great accurate casting, wonderful detailing to both front and rear plus of course this fully opening rear hatch. Bought in the 2015 Christmas period at the Halifax branch of Toyland. Mint and boxed.
