This was a total guessing game all round. Whilst I was taking the photo of the cutlery in the drying rack I saw the sun had got to nearly dipping point through the frosted kitchen window and was catching the sides and markings of these measuring beakers beautifully. But I had to wait for the current shot to finish before I could attempt to get this one. Luckily the sun was still just about up when I was able to take this.
I had no idea how much light was going to be getting into the camera because the sun was almost directly ahead through the window but it was starting to get fairly dim inside the room, so I sort of played it by instinct and that seemed to work well. It's strange, but already I feel I can make fairly decent guesses as to exposure times for the most part. But I think when you're talking about shots taking up to 30 minutes rather than seconds, it's probably fairly hard to create something completely unusable. Having said that, I tried one for 2 hours inside my lounge of an evening with the lights on and nothing came out at all. :)
I had hoped that the taller beaker behind would be more in frame, and I think I might try a similar set up with the wider angle setting when I have another good opportunity.

Veida the Great, 8' diameter, 310 feet high. Possibly the tallest doug fir in Washington State. There are other doug first in the Middle Fork with a couple feet more girth at the base, but none of them have been this tall.
A snapshot inside the 16-foot-diameter tunnel that will run from North Creek portal in Bothell to the Brightwater plant north of Woodinville. Tunneling crews have so far completed about a third of a mile of tunneling for this portion of the project, which at its deepest point will be 300 feet below ground. The entire Brightwater tunnel will be 14 miles long, running from the treatment plant north of Woodinville to Point Wells near the town of Woodway, with tunnel depths ranging from 40-450 feet.
Crews complete the tunnel lining segment by segment, five feet at a time. The tunnel boring machine will travel up to 50 feet a day.

With a diameter of 100 meters, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully steerable radio telescopes on earth. Since operations started in 1972, the technology has been continually improved (i.e. new surface for the antenna-dish, better reception of high-quality data, extremely low noise electronics) making it one of the most advanced modern telescopes worldwide.
The telescope is employed to observe pulsars, cold gas- and dust clusters, the sites of star formation, jets of matter emitted by black holes and the nuclei (centres) of distant far-off galaxies.
Effelsberg is an important part of the worldwide network of radio telescopes. The combination of different telescopes in interferometric mode makes possible to obtain the sharpest images of the universe.

The telescope may receive radio signals from a distance of up to 12bn light years. Together with a radio telescope in the US (Green Bank, Virginia), it is the largest radio telescope in the world.

This single reinforced expansion joint is 16" in diameter and is 15-1/8" in length. The expansion joint is fabricated with 316L stainless steel bellows, liner, weld ends, and bellows reinforcement. This expansion joint weighs 170 lbs and is used in a feed pre-heater. It is designed and fabricated to ASME Section VIII for 581 PSIG at 842°F with a travel capacity of 0.496" compression. 100% Dye-Penetrate testing was performed for the bellow attachment welds as well as 100% X-Ray testing on the long seam welds of the bellows and pipe ends. In addition, Hydro-testing was performed at 764 PSIG to assure quality and performance.
The Wyoming "Medicine Wheel" comprises an 80-foot diameter circle outlined in white stones (from the local area) with 28 white rock "spokes" and a white rock cairn in the center. Its precise age as a sacred site discovered by indigenous people has not been established but it has certainly been in continuous use for at least 3 millennia. It is still used for ceremonies and similar events by area Natives as well as non-natives today. The precise history of this Medicine Wheel is not known, but there are other, similarly constructed sites throughout the North American west, including in the U.S. and Canada.
The cognizant agency, by agreement with indigenous stakeholders, grants entry into the inner circle only for legitimate use by indigenous groups.
If you visit, please resist the temptation to enter the sacred space, and if you are there when the inner circle is in use, please observe from a respectful distance, and leave promptly if asked to as activities conducted therein may not be open to outsiders. Do not disturb objects left around or inside the wheel, or photograph the celebrants without their explicit permission.
The site is on a high promontory of Medicine Mountain, a little over 30 miles from the town of Lovell, Wyoming.
When not being used for traditional purposes by modern Indian tribal groups, it's open for public visitation year 'round. A designated Historic Landmark, it is under the protection of the US Forest Service, which from June 1- September 30 staffs a small informational kiosk at the trail head to the Wheel.
Anyone can leave offerings around the outside of the wheel, which is bounded by ropes hung along wood stanchions, at any time. At this elevation - nearly 10,000 feet - any object imbued with prayers will be that much closer to The Maker, and just might be carried aloft by the strong winds.
Most people make the lovely and not-difficult 1-1/2 mile walk from the parking area to the Wheel. Visitors with handicapped designation may drive to the top. Hunters can use powered vehicles – typically ATVs – to bypass the sacred site on the way to designated hunting areas in the Bighorn National Forest.

(See links). Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater about 37 mi east of Flagstaff and 18 mi west of Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in November 1967.

The size of the asteroid that produced the impact is uncertain—likely in the range of 100 to 170 feet (30 to 50 meters) across—but it had to be large enough to excavate 175 million metric tons of rock.
The crater was created about 50,000 years ago. The crater came to the attention of scientists after American settlers encountered it in the 19th century. In 1903, mining engineer and businessman Daniel M. Barringer suggested that the crater had been produced by the impact of a large iron-metallic meteorite. During the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Work on this project started in 1992 and represents the underground infrastructure to prevent flooding in the city of Tokyo and its suburbs during the season of typhoons and the rainy season.
This system has five reservoirs with a diameter of 32 meters and a height of 65 meters. Between themselves, they are connected through a tunnel at 6.4 miles at a depth of 50 meters under the ground.
When all the tanks overflow water enters the room height 25.4 meters long, 177 meters and a width of 78 meters. In this hall there are 59 columns of 10 megawatt pumps, which together are able to pump out 200 tons of water every second into the local river Edogawa.

My minimum diameter rocket (designed for UK Rocketry Association Level-3 certification), before constructing the motor section and fin canister, with RATTWorks M900 Hybrid Rocket motor, drogue recovery bay, payload bay, main recovery bay and nosecone.
The motor section will be constructed from phenolic tubing overwrapped in a carbon fibre / kevlar / high temperature epoxy composite, with carbon fibre composite fins.
The upper section of the rocket has been launched on small motors numerous times to ensure the recovery system works properly.

These are called Amaryllis, from my Mom's yard. My sister thought I should have them so she sent me the bulbs a few months ago.
The stem produces 4 large flowers each 5-6" in diameter.
They are a real challenge to photograph.
But are amazingly beautiful. 💜💗❤💖
