The Norcon pillbox was made from a concrete pipe 6ft in diameter and 4ft high, the walls were 4in of non-reinforced concrete with several cut loopholes. The pipe would be sunk into the ground over a pit that would provide a total of 6ft headroom.
The standard model had a roof made of timber, corrugated iron, and earth. Some installations were fitted with a concrete roof, others had no roof at all. The walls were given extra protection by a layer of sandbags and the exit may be via an open roof, through a hatch in the roof or through a low entrance cut into the pipe to a slit trench.
Norcon was not the only company to design a defence made from pipes. A similar design was the Croft pillbox developed by the Croft Granite, Brick and Concrete Company. However, the Norcon was by far the most common and gave its name to the general type.
Norcon Ltd was a small company specialising in the manufacture of large spun concrete pipes. In 1938, they were looking for new ways to market their products, the company experimented with producing air raid shelters. Although this venture does not appear to have been very successful, at least one very small and cramped Norcon shelter has recently been found.
In July 1940, as Norcons were being installed, one officer raised concerns after one pipe section had broken while being rolled into position and an installed Norcon had not stood up well to a concentrated burst of machine gun fire. Concerns of these sorts have understandably led to the Norcon being regarded as ''possibly the most dangerous, cheap and nasty of all pillbox designs'' certainly, it cannot have offered the protection equivalent to a conventional reinforced concrete pillbox, but according to the Chief Engineer of Eastern Command ''it would appear to be considerably better than many sandbag emplacements under construction.''
The pipe was made from a high alumina fondue cement which set quickly, making it possible to turn out about 20 units a day. Also, the fondue cement cured quickly reaching a strength in 24hrs for which Portland cement required 28 days to set. Although relatively few were actually built, Norcons were found all over the United Kingdom, from southwest England to the Orkney Islands.
The holding company Bowmaker purchased a controlling interest in Norcon Limited in 1943 and Norcon managed to show a profit, the company prospered after the end of hostilities.

This one found in the flood gravel bed of the Kali Ghandaki near Kagbeni, in the deepest river gorge in the world. With the the Dhauligiri mountains on one side and the Nilgiri and Annapurna range on the other, the river drains the winter snows from Tibet and northern Nepal to India where it pours into the Ganges at Patna, before forming a huge delta between KolKata and Dhaka.
The river at this point was at an altitude of about 2,700 metres (8,900 ft). The peaks on either side are about 8000 metres (26,000 ft +) , making the gorge some 17,000 ft deep.
I was there in 1983-4 in winter where a rough path was re-established each year after the torrent dries up. Now there is a road cut all the way up to Jomoson, Kagbeni and Jharkot. Progress? Or destroying priceless wilderness land?
When the ammonite lived, this was the ocean floor, which is now at nearly 9,000 ft. Ammonites are a common find here.

Menelaus crater (27 km diameter) straddles the highland-mare boundary at the southern margin of Mare Serenitatis. For years, scientists have wondered why Menelaus crater exhibits such a distinctive ray pattern. The distinctive ejecta pattern is partly a result of an oblique impact angle of the bolide that formed Menelaus. The ejecta rays are high reflectance relative to the surrounding terrain, but are these maturity or compositional rays? In most cases, a well-defined, high reflectance ray pattern suggests the relative youth of an impact crater. However, Menelaus crater formed in highland material, so Menelaus' rays may result more from compositional differences between the excavated material and the surrounding region, rather than the relative youth of the ejecta deposits. In fact, the optical maturity map for Menelaus crater, which is derived from Clementine multispectral data, supports this hypothesis because the crater rays are not visible, indicating that the rays are relatively mature (bright areas are immature).

Secretary of State staff photographers Danny Harris and Lori McElroy documented Arkansas State Capitol Chandelier recently when it was lowered to replace the light bulbs and to dust.
The chandelier is suspended from the ceiling by a 73-foot chain, the rotunda chandelier weighs more than 4,000 pounds and is approximately 12 feet in diameter and 18 feet in height. One of several light fixtures fashioned for the Capitol by the Mitchell-Vance Company of New York, the rotunda chandelier is an intricate assembly of literally thousands of brass, copper, zinc, iron and glass parts.
Rossendale's Panopticon, 'Halo', is an 18m-diameter steel lattice structure supported on a tripod five metres above the ground. From its position on Top o' Slate, an old quarry and former landfill site situated in the hills above Haslingden in the Rossendale Valley, it is clearly visible for miles around.
'Halo' is lit at night using the latest LED technology and after dark glows a sky-blue colour, appearing to hover above the town. This dramatic gateway piece overlooks the A56, welcoming visitors to Pennine Lancashire.
'Halo' is the centrepiece of a wider scheme, led by the REMADE in Lancashire programme, Groundwork Pennine Lancashire and Rossendale Borough Council, which has reclaimed and returned to public use 33 hectares of land including Top o' Slate and the adjacent Duckworth Clough. New tree and shrub planting has taken place and picnic tables, seating and interpretation features have been introduced, together with improved footpaths.
From the attractively re-landscaped site there are dramatic views overlooking the Rossendale Valley, and on the horizon can be seen both Darwen Tower and Peel Tower. To the south the visitor can see Bury and Manchester and, in the distance beyond, the Derbyshire Pennines.

Yarn is Juno Alice Lace in colour 'Golden Peach'. 1260 yds, one continuous strand (spliced for joins) throughout, including border. Yarn is baby alpaca/cashmere/silk.
Used 2800 Toho Japanese glass beads in colour 'transparent Rosaline rainbow.'

A basic gas-holder, consisting of an inverted container with the open end partially submerged in a tank of water, was invented by the French chemist Antoine Lavoisier in 1782. His design met the twin requirements for, firstly, a facility for storing a quantity of gas against unexpected surges in demand and/or interruptions to the manufacturing process and, secondly, a means of pressurising the gas so that it could be delivered to the consumer via a network of mains and pipes. The water in the base tank formed an air-tight seal which prevented the gas from escaping except through a valve-controlled outlet. Pressure was provided by the weight of the container itself, which sank down into the water as the volume of gas reduced. In some designs the rise and fall of the container was assisted by counterweights hidden in vertical support columns. A telescopic holder, whereby storage capacity could be doubled, tripled etc depending on the number of lifts, was first devised by Samuel Clegg in 1817 and pioneered at Leeds in 1826.
On taking possession of the Ashton-in-Makerfield Gas Consumers' Company works in 1875 the Local Board inherited a single gasholder with a storage capacity of just 17,000 cubic feet (cf). A report by the works manager in January 1877 contrasted this with the then daily demand for 18,000-22,000 cf of gas during the winter months, and drew attention to the problems that would occur if the manufacturing process was disrupted in any way (Wigan Observer & District Advertiser, 9 February 1877).
In 1878, after a long delay caused by various setbacks including leakage from the base tank, a new holder was installed by J & W Horton of Smethwick, Birmingham, at a cost to the Local Board of £645 (Wigan Observer & District Advertiser, April 1877-June 1878). The holder was still in situ in 1938 but, evidently, had been decommissioned some years earlier and was then ordered to be dismantled and sold as scrap. No plans or photographs have survived, but the reference in 1938 to “cast iron column guides” suggests that it was of the telescopic variety.

The blanket is made from minky with batting in between the two layers. The mushrooms and olives have been lightly stuffed from behind to give a relief/3D effect. Hand quilting was done around each topping and the crust edge was quilted through all layers of the fabric.
Each topping has a face...angry pepperoni, surprized mushrooms, peppy peppers and olives being olivey

With a diameter of 100 meters, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully steerable radio telescopes on earth. Since operations started in 1972, the technology has been continually improved (i.e. new surface for the antenna-dish, better reception of high-quality data, extremely low noise electronics) making it one of the most advanced modern telescopes worldwide.
The telescope is employed to observe pulsars, cold gas- and dust clusters, the sites of star formation, jets of matter emitted by black holes and the nuclei (centres) of distant far-off galaxies.
Effelsberg is an important part of the worldwide network of radio telescopes. The combination of different telescopes in interferometric mode makes possible to obtain the sharpest images of the universe.

The telescope may receive radio signals from a distance of up to 12bn light years. Together with a redio telescope in the US (Green Bank, Virginia), it is the largest radio telescope in the world.

(See links). Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater about 37 mi east of Flagstaff and 18 mi west of Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in November 1967.
Diameter: 0.737 miles
Depth: 560 feet
The size of the asteroid that produced the impact is uncertain—likely in the range of 100 to 170 feet (30 to 50 meters) across—but it had to be large enough to excavate 175 million metric tons of rock.
The crater was created about 50,000 years ago. The crater came to the attention of scientists after American settlers encountered it in the 19th century. In 1903, mining engineer and businessman Daniel M. Barringer suggested that the crater had been produced by the impact of a large iron-metallic meteorite. During the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Meteor Crater is a popular tourist attraction privately owned by the Barringer family through the Barringer Crater Company, with an admission fee charged to see the crater. The Meteor Crater Visitor Center on the north rim features interactive exhibits and displays about meteorites and asteroids, space, the Solar System, and comets. It features the American Astronaut Wall of Fame and such artifacts on display as an Apollo boilerplate command module (BP-29), a 1,406 lb meteorite found in the area, and meteorite specimens from Meteor Crater that can be touched. Formerly known as the Museum of Astrogeology, the Visitor Center includes a movie theater, a gift shop, and observation areas with views inside the rim of the crater. again these things can be ordered with larger or even smaller size diameter lenses but generally 2 7/8 has been seen as the norm for Stiles mechanical dwarfs.
My first mechanical i received later, a cast copy back spectacle, which i should at the time, think of measuring that back spectacle pocket on first chance to help the one popular question of signal collectors
in regards to shrinkage .
to even get a three inch lens (FSO) in that back spectacle which the purple lens had a horrible seam rim on the edge i ground that lens under three inches and opening up the pocket of the re cast spectacle and unfortunately because of my lack of proper tools had to do the work by hand so i cant say how much material was lost in making the pocket near three inches .
Its does seem from many in the collecting field, say re cast of originals parts shrink by 1/8.

The Spaghetti Nebula is a very large object. It has an apparent diameter of around 3 degrees – six full Moons – and a physical extent of approximately 160 light-years. The stellar debris cloud is believed to be around 40,000 years old. It is one of the oldest supernova remnants in the Milky Way that still has a well-defined structure.
The vast structure consists of stellar material that was expelled at highly supersonic speeds during the supernova event. It also contains the interstellar material that the expanding shock wave energizes along the way.
Simeis 147, also known as Sh2-240 or “Spaghetti nebula”, is a supernova remnant. The nebula is quite large and its shape is fairly spherical. It is located between the constellations Auriga and Taurus.
The star that produced the remnant is now a fast-spinning pulsar catalogued as PSR J0538+2817. The fast-spinning neutron star was discovered by a team of astronomers led by S. B. Anderson at the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University in 1994.
Pulsars are only rarely associated with their parent supernova remnants. Young pulsars can be too faint for detection in the radiation of the remnants, or their beams of emission may not be pointing toward Earth. Some may even be ejected from their birthplaces in the aftermath of the supernovae that produced them. They are usually detected after a targeted search within the boundaries of their associated remnants.
The Spaghetti Nebula was discovered photographically by Grigory Shajn at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in 1952. Shajn and his team used a Schmidt camera and a narrowband filter. The nebula would not be easily visible in regular images.

History of the State House Dome
When the Continental Congress came to Annapolis to meet in the Old Senate Chamber from November 1783 – August 1784, they found a State House which was still unfinished. Although the Old Senate Chamber was complete, the roof was not and it had leaked during the last few winters, damaging the upstairs rooms. The dome—or cupola—atop the State House was variously described as inadequate, unimpressive, and too small for the building and, it, too, leaked.
In order to rectify the situation, Joseph Clark, an Annapolis architect and builder, was asked to repair the roof and the dome. Clark first raised the pitch of the roof to facilitate the runoff of water and covered it with cypress shingles. The crowning achievement of Clark’s work on the State House was, of course, the extraordinary dome which he designed and built. It is not known where Clark’s inspiration for the unusual design of the dome came from, but it is very similar to one in Karlsruhe, Germany called the Schloßturm.
By the summer of 1788, the exterior of the new dome was complete. It was constructed of timber and no metal nails were used in its construction and, to this day, it is held together by wooden pegs reinforced by iron straps forged by an Annapolis ironmonger.
Although the exterior of the dome was completed by 1788, the interior was not completed until 1797. Tragedy struck the project in 1793 when a plasterer named Thomas Dance fell to his death from the inside of the dome. By 1794, Joseph Clark was completely disillusioned with the project and left it to John Shaw, the noted Annapolis cabinetmaker, to oversee completion. Over the years, John Shaw did much of the maintenance work on the State House, built various items for it and, in 1797, made the desks and chairs which furnished the Old Senate Chamber.
The First Dome: 1769-1774
Just as the Articles of Confederation did not effectively govern the country, the first dome of the State House at Annapolis did not survive more than a decade of Maryland weather. In 1769, the General Assembly of Maryland passed an act to erect a new state house, securely covered with slate tile or lead. The architect was Joseph Horatio Anderson, and the undertaker or builder of the project was Charles Wallace. According to William Eddis in 1773, the work was carried on with great dispatch and when completed would “be equal to any public edifice on the American continent.”
The exact date of the completion of the first dome or cupola is not known but evidence suggests that it was completed by the year 1774. In a 1773 Act of Assembly, Charles Wallace was instructed to fix an iron rod pointed with silver or gold at least six feet above the cupola. The General Assembly also recommended that the roof be covered with copper because the slate originally specified would require frequent repairs and cause other inconveniences. According to Charles E. Peterson’s “Notes on Copper Roofing in America to 1802”, it was more than likely that local copper was put on the roof to advertise the new industry of Maryland.
The Second Dome: 1785-1794
According to the Intendent of Revenue, Daniel St. Thomas Jenifer, the first dome of the State House was a contradiction of architectural design. A survey of the timbers in 1784 revealed that they were so decayed by water damage that a new dome would be required.
“It was originally constructed contrary to all rules of architecture; it ought to have been built double instead of single, and a staircase between the two domes, leading up to the lanthorn. The water should have been carried off by eaves, instead of being drawn to the center of the building, to two small conductors, which are liableto be choked by ice, and overflowed by rains. That it was next to impossible, under present construction, that it could have been made tight”.
On February 24, 1785 Jenifer placed a notice in the Maryland Gazette for carpenters work to be made to the dome and roof under the execution of Joseph Clark
“The work We are a Doing is to put a Roof on the Governor’s House and we are going to take the Roof of the State house and it is a going to Raise it one story higher and the Doom is to be Sixty foot higher then the old one”.
Clark raised the pitch of the dome to facilitate the runoff of excess water, the chief reason the timbers rotted in the original dome.
“The Annapolis dome is in its proportions like the original Karlsruhe tower. Possibly its more classical feeling is a result of the universal trend of architectural styles rather than the influence of the altered Schloßturm. Yet the arched windows below the architrave in Annapolis, one with the lower part closed, are like the windows below the Architrave in Karlsruhe in all of which the lower parts are closed. The horizontal oval windows below the main curving section of the dome in Annapolis resemble the vertical ovals in the equivalent part of the Karlsruhe tower. The small square windows above the balustrades and the architraves themselves in both buildings are similarly placed.”
