Edible Uses:
Bulb - raw or cooked. The bulb, which can be up to 5cm in diameter, has a mild, starchy flavor when eaten raw, but a gummy texture that reduces the enjoyment of it somewhat. When cooked, however, it develops a delicious sweet flavor somewhat like sweet chestnuts, and is a highly nutritious food. Excellent when slow baked, it can also be dried and made into a powder which can be used as a thickener in stews or mixed with cereal flours when making bread, cakes etc.. The bulbs can be boiled down to make a molasses, this was used on festival occasions by various Indian tribes. The bulbs can be harvested at any time of the year, but are probably best in early summer when the seeds are ripe. One report says that the bulbs contain inulin (a starch that cannot be digested by humans) but that this breaks down when the bulb is cooked slowly to form the sugar fructose which is sweet and easily digested. Quamash bulbs were a staple food of the N. American Indians. The tribes would move to the Quamash fields in the early autumn and, while some people harvested the bulbs, others would dig a pit, line it with boulders then fill it with wood and set fire to it. The fire would heat the boulders and the harvested bulbs would then be placed in the pit and the whole thing covered with earth and the bulbs left to cook slowly for 2 days. The pit would then be opened and the Indians would feast on the bulbs until they could no longer fit any more in their stomachs. Whatever was left would be dried and stored for winter use.

A decoction of the roots has been used to induce labor. An infusion of the leaves has been used to treat vaginal bleeding after birth and to help expel the placenta.

(See links). Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater about 37 mi east of Flagstaff and 18 mi west of Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in November 1967.
Diameter: 0.737 miles
Depth: 560 feet
The size of the asteroid that produced the impact is uncertain—likely in the range of 100 to 170 feet (30 to 50 meters) across—but it had to be large enough to excavate 175 million metric tons of rock.
The crater was created about 50,000 years ago. The crater came to the attention of scientists after American settlers encountered it in the 19th century. In 1903, mining engineer and businessman Daniel M. Barringer suggested that the crater had been produced by the impact of a large iron-metallic meteorite. During the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon.

This tree fell centuries ago. Photos taken of the Fallen Monarch in the late 1800s show the log has decayed very little in more than 100 years. The tree was probably hollowed by fire long before it fell and died.
The Fallen Monarch has served many uses. The Gamlin brothers stayed inside while they built their cabin. For 2 summers before, it served them as a hotel and saloon. The U.S. Cavalry used it to temporarily stable their 32 horses. The hole in the roof was made so a long chimney could vent cooking smoke.

This jar was thrown on the wheel in two pieces (jar and lid) of white stoneware clay.
The exterior surface is a warm periwinkle blue with slight color variations and brown speckles. The exterior color was achieved by painting on a triple layer of light blue slip (colored liquid clay) while the piece was still wet. After the bisque firing, a Clear glaze was applied to the surface to provide a glossy finish.
The interior is coated with a cool milky Yanagahara White glaze which features similar brown speckles as the Clear glaze on the exterior.
The lid fits snugly and is the perfect size to fit in the palm of your hand, so no 'knob' is needed. There is a 'hidden' wheel-trimmed foot on the bottom.

This little rascal is about 1/16" in diameter!!!

The photographs in my set, "Weed Flower Micros," may appear to be close-ups of regular-sized flowers – they are not!
These are micro (macro) photos of tiny little flowers which bloom on ordinary weeds.
How tiny? The largest weed flower in the set is only, when measured across its widest part from petal tip to petal tip, 3/4" in diameter!
Some of these miniscule flowers are so small that the entire blossom you are looking at is 1/4" in diameter…again that’s measuring from petal tip to petal tip across the widest part of the bloom!
The smallest part of a weed flower that I have managed to successfully shoot and achieve good detail in is a photo I made of a bud that measured LESS than 1/16" in diameter across its widest part! For a reference to its size I have also included a photo of that bud next to the head of an ordinary paper match, which dwarfs the bud.
I am delighting in discovering the beauty, complexity, and variety in something so small that it’s easily ignored or downright difficult to see with the naked eye.
And it’s an even greater delight to realize that this incredible beauty has been growing wild in my lawn, year after year, right under my un-seeing eyes as I’ve repeatedly mown them down with my lawn mower, never realizing the unseen beauty that I was trampling under my feet.

Halemau’mau is a half mile diameter pit crater in the summit caldera of Kilauea volcano. The ledge which
can be seen about halfway up the crater wall marks the high point of the lava lake from the 1967-68 eruption.
In the Hawai’ian mythology, Halemau’mau is the home of Pele, the goddess fire and volcanoes. It is a sacred
place to Hawai’ians, who sometimes leave offerings on the rim of the crater. According to legend, the Kilauea
caldera was formed during an epic battle between Pele and her sister Hi’iaka. Pele had sent Hi’iaka to fetch
her lover from Kauai. When she returned, she found that Pele had broken her promise and burned Hi’iaka’s
favorite forests, so Hi’iaka retaliated by making love to Pele’s lover at the summit of the volcano, in full view
of Pele. Pele then buried her lover Lohi’au in a flood of lava. Hi’iaka dug frantically to recover the body, but
her brother stopped her from digging so she would not reach water and put out Pele’s fire. Colorful story.
Vulcanologists have a different story. In the late 1400s, great outflows of magma from the Kilauea lake
emptied the magma reservoir, and with its internal support withdrawn, the surface collapsed forming the
caldera, accompanied by explosive eruptions. This is a far more unlikely possibility than Pele and Hi’iaka.
Using geometry to lay out changing proportions of 2D slices of rectangles, later cut from clay and rolled into spheres. Looking for artistically useful series. Also, MARBLES.
This was the limit of the diameter of something I could cut on this saw. I had to roll the blade guard up by hand and hold it with my right hand while lowering the saw, holding the stock with my left. The mechanism that auto-lifts the guard didn't engage until I was already about 1-2 inches into the piece. It cuts instantly, though, as fast as I could lower the saw. Nice and clean, too. When I got all the way through, the pipe was touching the motor housing. If the pipe had been 1/2" thicker, I wouldn't have been able to make a nice 1-pass cut like this.
Diameter probably bit more than 2 cm.

The ring has been sanded and it feels just like silk - it's a very tactile piece of jewellery. It is now ready for its next stage. Holes have been drilled centrally from front to back, ready for the sterling silver wire inlay. (I checked that the drill bit was the same diameter as the piece of sterling silver wire that I was going to inlay. That's easy to forget.)

This tree fell centuries ago. Photos taken of the Fallen Monarch in the late 1800s show the log has decayed very little in more than 100 years. The tree was probably hollowed by fire long before it fell and died.
The Fallen Monarch has served many uses. The Gamlin brothers stayed inside while they built their cabin. For 2 summers before, it served them as a hotel and saloon. The U.S. Cavalry used it to temporarily stable their 32 horses. The hole in the roof was made so a long chimney could vent cooking smoke.
