The Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere (Italian: Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere) is a titular minor basilica, one of the oldest Churches of Rome, perhaps the first in which Mass was openly celebrated. The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church date back to the 340s. The first sanctuary was built in 221 and 227 by Pope Callixtus I and later completed by Pope Julius I (Wikipedia.com)

(See links). Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater about 37 mi east of Flagstaff and 18 mi west of Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. It was designated a National Natural Landmark in November 1967.

Diameter: 0.737 miles

Depth: 560 feet

The size of the asteroid that produced the impact is uncertain—likely in the range of 100 to 170 feet (30 to 50 meters) across—but it had to be large enough to excavate 175 million metric tons of rock.

The crater was created about 50,000 years ago. The crater came to the attention of scientists after American settlers encountered it in the 19th century. In 1903, mining engineer and businessman Daniel M. Barringer suggested that the crater had been produced by the impact of a large iron-metallic meteorite. During the 1960s and 1970s, NASA astronauts trained in the crater to prepare for the Apollo missions to the Moon.

Meteor Crater - Wikipedia

Meteor Crater is a popular tourist attraction privately owned by the Barringer family through the Barringer Crater Company, with an admission fee charged to see the crater. The Meteor Crater Visitor Center on the north rim features interactive exhibits and displays about meteorites and asteroids, space, the Solar System, and comets. It features the American Astronaut Wall of Fame and such artifacts on display as an Apollo boilerplate command module (BP-29), a 1,406 lb meteorite found in the area, and meteorite specimens from Meteor Crater that can be touched. Formerly known as the Museum of Astrogeology, the Visitor Center includes a movie theater, a gift shop, and observation areas with views inside the rim of the crater. Guided tours of the rim are offered daily, weather permitting.

This drawing of a 3-inch diameter mirror "Brighton" heliograph is from the April 1909 Military Instruments catalogue from J. H. Steward[1]. Note that, as a printing error, the top of the mirror in Fig. 94 has been clipped - see Fig. 95 to see what it should look like, or view the older (lower resolution) versions in [2,6]. While J. J. Steward calls this a "Territorial Heliograph", this figure appeared 24 years earlier in Cassela's 1885 Catalog [2], which describes it as "Portable Heliograph, "The Brighton," by Colonel Bonham". Furthermore, in the figure itself, if you look at the enlargement (Fig. 95), you can make out words on the back of the mirror, and the top one seems to be "Brighton". The 1885 Cassela's catalog says "Improved on the Etchowe Heliograph (Major MacGregor's), by Colonel Bonham, Grenadier Guards.", and offers it with 3", 5", 8" or 10" mirrors. However the instrument in this 1885/1909 figure strongly resembles that described and illustrated in April/May 1881 as being an improved Major MacGregor's Etchowe Heliograph improved and sold by the original manufacturer of Major MacGregor's Etchowe Heliograph, W. Stone with 3" or 5" mirrors [3,4,6] – perhaps the Brighton heliograph is Colonel Bonham's improvement on W. Stone's improvement of Major MacGregor's Etchowe Heliograph. To add to the confusion, in 1887, Negretti and Zambra used the 1885 figure to sell "Negretti and Zambra's Improved Portable Heliographs" with 3", 5", 8" or 10" mirrors.

A figure that seems to provide more detail into the workings of the Brighton heliograph appears in Stanley's 1890 surveying book (and subsequent editions)[7], where it is not named, but the players are: "Fig. 315.-Heliograph. 669.-Heliograph. - This instrument is the invention of Mr. H. C. Mance,* since improved by Major Macgregor, Colonel Bonham, and others. It was intended, and is used, for a military signalling apparatus". I imagine that Mance begged to differ on the "improvement" part.

The text that accompanies this figure in the 1909 catalog says:

O322. –*The Territorial Heliograph, with 3-inch Mirrors, as supplied to a number of regiments in Great Britain, Canada and India. The Signalling Mirror is set rapidly in the required direction by adjusting it bodily on its tripod, the final slow horizontal adjustment being obtained by rack and pinion in the head of the tripod. A quick and slow vertical adjustment is attached to the mirror. Sending key with regulating screw to beat. Duplex Mirror with clamp for use when the sun and distant object are in opposite direction. Solid "sight arm" with clamp and vane on sighting rod. Leather sling case. Strong tripod stand with leather protecting cap to head. Fig. 94 illustrates the complete instrument, with separate duplex mirror, and Fig. 95 is enlarged illustration of signalling mirror and key ...... 6 10 0

STONE'S IMPROVED HELIOGRAPH.

Notes.

A VERY simple addition has recently been made to Major Macgregor's Ekowe Pocket Heliograph (TELEGRAPHIC JOURNAL, October 15th, 1880) by Mr. W. Stone, the constructor of the instrument. In the original apparatus the movement of the mirror for producing the flashes was effected by the direct action of the hand. Mr. Stone's improvement consists in adding a small key, by the depression of which the mirror is moved through a small angle, and which can be worked like an ordinary Morse key. This addition is shown by the figure, which is self-explanatory.

Pin Oak takes a back seat to it's red and white oak cousins when it comes to woodworking, but as you can see, it makes a pretty nice platter! The dark streaking in this piece are a result of spalting. Spalting refers to fungal growth in decaying wood, thus this beautiful spalted wood is just a step away from being rotten (rest assured finishing ends that process, though). It's much more challenging to turn than more viable wood in that it doesn't cut nearly as cleanly, but the dramatic effects spalting lends to a piece are well worth the effort.

Paraluna by: Christopher Schardt from: Oakland, CA year: 2018

Paraluna combines kinetic sculpture, LEDs and music. Its main component is a disc 10m in diameter with 17,280 LEDs. A computer controls the LEDs while rotating, raising, lowering, and tilting the disc.

Some of the LED patterns work with the rotation of the disk, creating spirals. Others use persistence-of-vision, making an image hover in space above the spinning LEDs. Spokes demonstrates both of these styles: photos.app.goo.gl/DcP9IauNTjRHENUh2

Surrounding the disc are several high-quality speakers that play classical music at comfortable, yet immersive volume, creating a comfortable, peaceful place to be. Patterns are chosen to complement each musical piece, as with Firmament:

Description

Mycena galericulata, also known as Common Tufted Mycena is a small or medium, grayish brown agaric that has a bell-shaped, radially grooved cap and pinkish gills. It grows in woods on the trunks, stumps and fallen branches of various types of decidous trees.

Cap roughly conical when young, becomes broadly bell-shaped or with a broad umbo. Margin initially somewhat curved inward, but soon evens out or even becomes uplifted, and often splits radially in age. Color is somewhat buff-brown on the margin, and fades gradually to pale dirty tan to dirty cinnamon-brown. Flesh is thick in the center of the cap and tapers evenly to the margin, and is watery gray. Gills narrowly attached (adnexed) to broadly attached or sinuate. The gill spacing ranges from close to somewhat distantly spaced, with 26–36 gills reaching the stem. Spores are pale cream colored. Stem is similarly colored as the cap but more pallid near the apex. It is smooth, slender, more or less equal, and somewhat rooting. It has white hair. The mushroom has no ring

With a diameter of 100 meters, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully steerable radio telescopes on earth. Since operations started in 1972, the technology has been continually improved (i.e. new surface for the antenna-dish, better reception of high-quality data, extremely low noise electronics) making it one of the most advanced modern telescopes worldwide.

The telescope is employed to observe pulsars, cold gas- and dust clusters, the sites of star formation, jets of matter emitted by black holes and the nuclei (centres) of distant far-off galaxies.

Effelsberg is an important part of the worldwide network of radio telescopes. The combination of different telescopes in interferometric mode makes possible to obtain the sharpest images of the universe.

The diameter of the macrocarpa tree was 4.8 metres.

Therefore the correct mathematical calculation to ascertain the circumference would be the diameter x pi (3.1416).

Therefore the circumference of the macrocarpa tree is 4.8 metres x 3.1416 which 15.1 metres.

They raised the bowl of the tank today. That bowl is 74 feet diameter, and is around 40 feet tall. The process they used was the same a house movers use to lift a house. They had about 24 brackets mounted to the top of the stand pipe with cable going to the bottom of the bowl. Using hydralics they would lift appox. 12 inches, "dog" off and then another 12 inches. It took them just over one hour to lift the tank the estimated 100 feet. It was really a "non-event" due to how smooth and easy it went up

The graphics are or will announce that Columbia is home of Lindsey Wilson College. The graphics company is going to have to finish their job from the bosun chair.

Click on the link below to watch the bowl go up the standpipe. There are 14 pictures, that were taken over one hour and ten minutes that it took to raise the bowl. You will need to click "slideshow" on the top left of page;

See another view of these miniature roses in a cluster in the previous photo. This one is my favorite view. The tiny roses measure about 3/4" to 1" in diameter. The whole bush is about 9' tall now and is located at the side of an outbuilding. Thanks Mimbrava for the ID - that is exactly the name!
