These are sandhoppers, amphipods of the family Talitridae. Many species are found in the intertidal zone, on and above the shoreline. Many are scavengers, feeding on kelp, carrion and other organic matter that washes up on the beach. I observed these ones devouring a small peice of kelp on Rincon beach park in Carpinteria, California
Another statue of the savage underworld denizens ("Gui", pronounced as "Kuwee" which is analogous to a Western ghost) who judge/punish souls who do not qualify for heaven.
This area was creepy for me, and even more so for my companions who didn't enter this area.
TG and F have known each other their whole lives, but this was the first time we all got together that they spent significant chunks of time actually playing together. It was so great to see them playing in the yard and with various toys. When they came back to the table for desert TG was upset. The cause? His chair was too far from F's. Awww.
