I call her the blue princess. She and her princess sisters arrive each year to lay their larvae on the new grape leaves. Their mates arrive after them. As beautiful as she is, the larvae grow rapidly into striped caterpillars, blue and yellow. Voracious feeders, they rapidly proceed to devour the grape leaf forming white lace like patterns as they eat away the green exterior of the leaves. The babies have a survival mechanism which if one comes in contact with results in a burning sensation which quickly turns into a welt on the skin. Each season I attempt to capture them in bottles and drive them into the desert for release, as I hope for their survival.As destructive as they are it is not wise to interupt the forces of nature by destroying them. I cannot use any chemical to prohibit their growth because the grape vine provides shade for the turtles who live in the earth beneath it. They have approximately 4 visits per season. At times there are as many as 15-20 or more circling the vine at one time. The princess is particular about where and when. She dances in swirls slowly before landing. In her staid position her mate finds her and the process continues. The male and female are indigo blue with a red-orange collar. Truly magnificent. I went to a Group Shoot on Saturday Oct 3rd where there were about 20 models and 15 photographers at this church site. Models were dressed as brides, halloween style, and so were the grooms.
It was a lot of fun. I hope to keep going to them.
