Ruwanwelisaya Chedi is an elegant Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, close to the more famous Anuradhapura ruins. Around sunset the local crowd, all dressed white, gathers for the evening prayers.

The man in the frame was distant from the others and stood in silence with an absorbed expression. I didn't want to disturb him, so I took this shot instead, where his position in front of the white stupa stresses the sense of mystic isolation.

I asked one of the pilgrims about him, but I could only understand that he's a "very revered" man in the community. And that may be the case, as according to Schopenhauer "to be alone is the fate of all great souls".

Happy Mothers Day, mama.

Aku hanya kepingin kalian mengenangku

Tiada mana cinta harapkan wang ringgitmu.

Cinta hakiki luaran bonda ikat nadi seruan

Terus mengalir darah keturunan

Jangan anggap bonda mahu diratap jasa budi

Harap bonda agar imbas detik melahirkan

nyawa disipi mati

Biarku…engkar aurat, janji kalian dibaluti

Biarku…lupa fitrah santap, janji kalian diisi

Biarku…hilang teduhan, janji kalian dipayungi

Biarku…kosong di minda, janji kalian diasuhi

Biarku…dilarang rezeki Ilahi, janji kalian diberkati

Dengarilah rintihan sayup bonda minthali

Di pangkuan dapat mendakap, kini sekadar menanti.

Meraung, memanggil anakanda telah jauh pergi

Sampai bila pernantian si bonda kian akhir

Fikiran celaru gusir dek risau gelora

Rindu teramat menyuntik sembilu jiwa.

Sahutilah harapan insan sejati

Ciptaan suci persis salji

Lesap, terusir kasih kalian

Bonda harungi rintagan Tuhan

lambang hawa memikul maruah naluri

Bonda dinobat cinta, cinta kalian memadai

I sincerely apologize for the lack of translation of this poem I wrote in my native language, Malay. Its basically about a mother's devotion and is dedicated to all mums across the world. I'm sorry for the out of focus on this minute florals. Like mothers, they have flaws but they're still your mum no matter what.

If anybody were to graffiti an ancient church today, I'd be leading the calls for their exemplary punishment but 'twas not always the case. In days of yore it was perfectly acceptable to signal one's devotion by carving a design into the church fabric or to do a bit of personal art upon it.

That's what we have here. This graffiti of a cross on the entrance to my local church may be 1000 years old. Supporting that, there are other Christian graffiti on this (the left) side of the entrance while on the other there are quite different graffiti which appear very similar to pagan symbols. The distinct types are not mixed. It is as if early Christians had adopted the left side while Pagans (at least some of whom may have provided the muscle to build the church) had adopted the right. Paganism existed peacefully alongside Christianity for many years. I love the idea that both communities may have peacefully loved this one church alongside each other. Whatever, this mark is certainly very old and apart from a bit of algae evident on the left and some tiny spots under the 'A', it has lasted well. AL may be the devotee or perhaps another wishing to associate himself with the mark. If so AL was obviously literate, making himself one of the educationally most able and probably among the wealthiest of the community.

HMM all.

Relax my friend, sometime we just can't get ourselves involved in everything.

Not that we cannot achieve the wanted result in all those aspects,

but it simply sores our brains and frustrates us by doing so. Relax!

The flagellation column is a work of art from the Catholic era. It was created by master craftsman Hans Witten in 1515 and was intended for the monastery, where it served as an image of devotion and meditation for the monks. It was not installed in the church until around 1820.

The entire work of art is carved from a single oak trunk with a diameter of 1.20 metres; only a few parts that extend beyond this diameter have been added. It is approximately 3.80 m high. The carving depicts the flagellation of Christ in a group of five figures. It shows Christ tied to a tree trunk and held by a rope by one of the soldiers standing behind the whole group. Two others scourge him, while a fourth kneels at the foot of the scourging column and adjusts the crown of thorns. This work of art displays characteristic features of Hans Witten's figures of Christ, such as the hair ending in tightly parted braids, the sideburns and the short, two-part goatee, among others.

Chemnitz Palace Church is located in the Schloßchemnitz district on Palace Hill and is considered the city's most valuable building. The first church on the site of today's palace church was built in the 12th century as a monastery church dedicated to St. Mary, with the Benedictine monastery complex adjoining it to the south. Through large-scale rebuilding, Abbots Heinrich von Schleinitz and Hilarius von Rehburg created a new church in the style of a three-nave, late Gothic hall church. The architect responsible was Andreas Günther from Komotau (Chomutov) in Bohemia, who completed the rebuilding in 1523/25. The monastery complex was also rebuilt in the late Gothic style of Upper Saxony from 1499 onwards. In 1540, the monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation. In 1945, the Palace Church suffered bomb damage to its Gothic Revival spire, roof and north façade. Despite some resistance from city officials, the damaged spire was demolished as a ‘foreign element in the cityscape’ and replaced between 1946 and 1949 with the current, lower structure as part of the damage repair work. The interior was restored between 1950 and 1957.

devotion

Straight from the camera.

Thanks, Lauri Lauren for finding this excellent location!

While a huge crowd assembles for evening Aarti ( prayers for Ganges ) on the famed ghats of Varanasi, which are run by organizations who compete to out do each others crowd pulling capability, I came across this little guy who performed Aarti of his own - his audience was just one - ME. Little did he care if anyone watched him perform, he just did his duty all by himself, with absolute sincerity. And the best part was, he wasn't distracted by my presence for a second, now that's called devotion.

I could connect the dots between his sincerity to his prayers and mine towards photography. We don't really need a big audience or fame or a standing ovation to keep the flame burning within ourself, all we need is to love what we do and do it with absolute dedication, regardless of any other benefits, that's what is truly satisfying and that's what my journey in photography so far has been about.

As might be expected, the attraction of a 'Deltic' making its presence known at York station was likely to be a big attraction, and the devotion to the Class 55 'Deltics' is as strong as it ever was, more than four decades since their demise on the ECML. Including the overall scene at York station, to include both fellow enthusiasts and an 'Azuma' in a contemporary scene, was one of my objectives for this visit. D9009/55009 (bearing the identity of erstwhile classmate 55013 'The Black Watch') stands at York station's platform 3 awaiting the right away, the UK Railtours' charter 'The Coronation Deltic' 1Z56 17:10 Scarborough to Finsbury Park on 19th August 2023. The additional headboard commemorated former 'Deltic' driver Harry Wilson, who celebrated his 100th birthday in May, when the charter train was originally to run, hence the its name. He was travelling on this train and the loco was renumbered and renamed in his honour, 55013 being his favourite 'Deltic' when he was an ECML 'top link' driver during his BR career.

Hemis Monastery is revered as the largest monastic institution in Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir in north India. The monastery has more than 200 branches with more than 1,000 monks in the Himalayan region. Situated in the foothills of Indus at a distance of 45 km from Leh, the monastery has access to motorable roads. Travelling to Hemis monastery itself is a thrilling experience and the surroundings make the journey a memorable one.

The population of Ladakh is predominantly Buddhist and Ladakh has been deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, which follows the Mahayana and Vajrayana schools. In these forms of Buddhism, Buddha is worshipped a deity who has attained Nirvana (freedom from the cycle of birth and death). Various incarnations of Buddha, known as Bodhisattvas, are also worshipped in monasteries.

A woman is working with devotion.
