In the framework of the MADE IN – Platform for Contemporary Crafts and Design, the fifth edition of the AND Fair: Abandon Normal Devices (Sajam 3N: Napusti normalne naprave) took place in Rijeka on April 19th and 20th, featuring an intriguing showcase of various devices and objects by Radiona association from Zagreb, and collectives Cirkulacija2 and BridA from Slovenia, along with a rich program of workshops for both children and adults.

Relays will control, once the devices are installed, from right to left: charge pump/watchdog circuit (red), coolant (blue), motor direction (black; for VFD) and motor run (white; or VFD). There is also a separate non-relay-connected 2-pin plug not shown here that also links to a VFD. The colour-coding is home-made using Revell and Humbrol modelling/hobby enamels and a fine brush. The leads disappearing under the computer mounting plate at bottom of photo run to Neutrik four-pin XLR-type sockets that will be installed on the front panel of the control box.
This is a device I encountered while waling around Hornbake Plaza at UMD and frankly it confused me so much I took a picture of it. After a lot of. digging I found out it was a weather station, just sitting there collecting data. Monitoring tools like this help with understanding climate patterns and their local effects, which supports informed climate action. Aside from that I also discovered a website I never knew about. (weather.umd.edu/) While I can't know if they are using these sensors or not this website, which provides weather forecasts, is run by the American Meteorological Society at UMD. This organization is dedicated to advancing climate and weather science. As part of that initiative, the website, run by students, offers opportunities creates opportunities to educate future meteorologists and climate scientists and allow for more responsible climate action in the future.
