Engineering designs frequently fail not because of technical flaws, but due to a lack of attention to the environments, cultures, institutions, and systems in which they operate. For instance, global health initiatives such as well-drilling projects in Bangladesh and One Laptop Per Child programs faltered when designers overlooked critical local contexts like environmental conditions and educational infrastructures. To better understand how context is (or isn’t) integrated into the design process, researchers analyzed capstone reports from novice engineering teams and found they overwhelmingly focused on technical and institutional factors—such as material availability and procedural norms—while paying far less attention to socio-cultural, environmental, economic, and political factors, despite ABET advocating for context-informed engineering judgments. Further studies involving practitioner interviews and document reviews across domains like medical devices, consumer products, and information technologies revealed that experienced designers more routinely incorporate a broader set of contextual influences—especially when working in unfamiliar or global contexts. Insights from both novice and established designers are now being used to develop frameworks and pedagogical tools that help design students and professionals more intentionally gather, synthesize, and apply contextual information throughout the design process.

In the framework of the MADE IN – Platform for Contemporary Crafts and Design, the fifth edition of the AND Fair: Abandon Normal Devices (Sajam 3N: Napusti normalne naprave) took place in Rijeka on April 19th and 20th, featuring an intriguing showcase of various devices and objects by Radiona association from Zagreb, and collectives Cirkulacija2 and BridA from Slovenia, along with a rich program of workshops for both children and adults.
